  1. Hey, Doing my PhD in chemical engineering @UMD starting this Fall. Have you guys been looking for a place to stay? I've been looking online. In Bangkok, Thailand right now, will fly to MD at the end of the month. Let me know what you guys are doing for apartments. I think I need some advice...
  2. I think I might be in the same situation. Got accepted to the PhD in Chemical engineering program. The offer letter didn't mention anything about funding. I've just emailed the department, will let you know as soon as I get the reply.
  3. I need your advice about how to answer an email. Here's the situation. The school that I got accepted to has asked me whether I would attend the Open House in March. Since I'm in SE Asia and have a full-time job, I told them that I will not be able to make it. However, since I won't be able to visit the school, I've asked for contacts of graduate students under 2 professors that I'm interested in working with, professor A and B (I'm interested in working with professor A more than professor Both professors gave me contacts of their students. However, professor B also emailed me saying that he has a collaboration with professor A on a topic, and said that they think that I'm perfect for that work. professor B also attached couple of papers with the email. He is waiting to hear back from me whether I'm interested. (professor A is also CCed in the email) Here are my thoughts 1. Since I'm still waiting to hear back from other schools, it's not 100% that I will attend this school 2. Even if I will attend this school, I don't want to say yes to professor B right now. Even though the topic is interesting, I want to keep my options of working with Professor A on other topics open. Any advice/suggestions on how to answer the email will be greatly appreciated
  4. wow! that's awful, and it's UCSB! I assume that this is the letter from the department. Did the letter from the Graduate School include the same amount of funding?
  5. PM me if you need another opinion. I will try my best!
  6. Same thing happened to me. A professor (who also part of the admissions committee) emailed me and said whether I'm still interested in the program, and what's the chance of attending if I receive an offer with full financial aid. I told her that I'm very interested, and the chance of attending is likely since the program is one of my top choices. It's been a week, and I haven't heard back...don't know what's going on. What do you guys think?
  7. Here is my story --- I'm from SE Asia. I went to the US for school, graduated with a BS in 2003, and MS in 2006 both in chemical engineering from the same university. Continued to work in my professor's lab while I looked for a job in the US. Because I'm not a US citizen/PR, it took me 8 months to find a company who's willing to sponsor my work visa. I worked there as a researcher for about 2 years, and then decided to come home. Got a research job at a petrochemical company, been working there since 2009 Got bored with my job, decided to apply to PhD programs for Fall 2012....only applied to top programs, waitlisted from a few schools, didn't get in anywhere And here I am, trying again this year...
  8. I have received an email from the ChE department of one of the universities that I'm applying to. (less than a month after I have applied) The admissions committee asked me whether that I am still interested in the program, and what are the chance of attending if I got an offer. I replied saying that I'm still very interested, and the chance of attending is very high since the school is one of my top choices. Does this mean that an offer is coming for sure? Thanks msakbo01
