I know seattle is much better than Baltimore, but I think the job opportunity in industry in and around MD is much better....I also asked for suggestions from a student who got PhD degree in JHU and are now working in UW. He also told me that unless I have a specific interest that JHU excels, UW would be a better choice. Now, I don't how to reply to JHU. In the phone interview, I told them that JHU was still high in my list. They think I almost accept their offer. I don't know how to tell them if I decide to decline JHU......I feel so sorry....

Hi all, I got offers from both UW and JHU, biostatistics PhD. I know both of them are top in biostatistics, so it is really hard for me to say no to either of them.... My major is statistics. I am now interested in statistical genetics. Actually, I don't know other fields much so far. So I want the chance to learn many fields so that I can find out which one I like to focus on. I want a flexible environment for me to make such choice. Moreover, I want to go to industry or research institution after graduation, and I don't want to become a faculty... Here are some information I know about UW and JHU: Biostatistics in UW has close relationship with Dept. of Statistics, and it also has some collaborative institutions such as FHCRC. Students usually find a faculty position or research position in research institutions. Seattle is a good place. Biostatistics in JHU have close knit group of students and faculty and interact in both academic and social settings, which attracts me very much. Students in JHU are encouraged to have different interests. JHU has top medical school, which I believe will offer abundant resource for research. Also, many students find a position in industry after graduation. But people often say that the living environment in Baltimore is not satisfactory. Could anyone give me some of your opinions about the academic life in both JHU and UW? If leave out the factor of the city safty, which one is a better choice? Thx!
