Hey all! So I am applying to programs for Fall 2016 and just would love to hear more conversation about looking at accredited schools and programs. I'm focusing more on the college counseling/student affairs side of things. Are people going for CACREP accredited institutions? Are you looking at those that are just regionally accredited? Both? Would love to hear from others and their understanding of what you need to qualify for exams in the future, etc.

College Counseling/Student Affairs
ChasingMavericks replied to ChasingMavericks's topic in Education Forums
Awesome to hear about your search! I've still been trying to figure out what exactly I need in a program, so I've only searched through CACREP so far. But I think I have finally figured out that I can expand my search and still be able to be licensed down the road. I have a wide range of interests so I want to have my bases covered. So confusing! Haha searching for schools is always so much fun It's just been a lot to think about, as I'm sure you understand. I'll go ahead and check out University of Bridgeport, it actually sounds like it might be what I am interested in as well. How have you been searching for schools? Google? NASPA? Right now I am working toward my Masters in Public Health in Health Education and Promotion, so I'm excited to be able to mix that in with a degree in Counseling/Student Affairs. So far I'm really interested in North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Minnesota State U. Mankato, and St. Cloud State University. I'm still doing a lot of searching though, so I haven't 100% decided on anything except for NCSU. -
Is anybody else out there looking into CACREP accredited college counseling/student affairs programs? It's pretty slim pickins so I would love to hear where people are interested in going, etc. I'm still looking through the list, but I have some thoughts on schools of interest, but since I am completing a masters currently I'm hoping to find a program that I can get an assistantship so I won't have to pay for it, or at least not all of it. I want to be able to work in all aspects of student affairs, I love residence life, career services, freshman orientation, and student events just to name a few! I also want the ability to be a licensed counselor for students and to work in counseling centers/health services also. So that's why I decided to go for this degree. What made you pick college counseling/student affairs?

Hey all! So here I am about to finish up my MPH in Spring 2016 and wanting to attend a second masters program for Student Affairs/College Counseling after graduation, so Fall 2016. I have used the same GRE scores for all of my past applications, this would be 8 applications and I previously was accepted into 5 of those programs. Mind you these aren't good GRE scores by any means, except for my writing score, which is a 4.5. So since I am now about to start a new application season I am starting to think about if I really should retake the GRE or not. So far only two of the schools I'm interested in request the GRE and I know I have a strong application with my work/volunteer experience, letters of recommendation, and the fact I would have proven that I can handle graduate work. What has everyone else done in similar situations? Have you gone without retaking the GRE?

I'm in the consideration stage as well! I am still on the prowl for which schools exactly, but my interest is in masters in counseling programs that focus on college counseling/student development. I have a list I'm still going through, but so far I'm really interested in the North Carolina State University program and the University of North Carolina Greensboro program that is an MS/Eds.

Personally, I love living in student housing. I've had two experiences, one in New York where I did not choose to live in student housing and then right now I am living in California and chose to live in student housing. I think housing has a lot to offer, though it may be spendy in some cases, it is also a really easy way to be able to make a friend network and get to know more people that might not be in your program. As much as having a place off campus would be appealing to me, I know that for me at least having that ability to easily meet others and get involved trumps that.

Doctorate Programs Counseling/Higher Ed.
ChasingMavericks replied to ChasingMavericks's topic in Psychology Forum
Even since posting this I've started to consider more and more a Masters in Counseling degree rather than a doctorate. I will be graduating with my MPH in Spring 2016, which is why I had considered moving to the next level of a doctorate instead of another masters. However, the more I think the more I feel like the counseling masters is really a better fit for me and my goals, not a doctorate. There's so much to think about! I have a lot of interests which makes the search a little overwhelming. I guess I don't know enough about what the different types of counseling degrees really mean (i.e. Med, MA, MS; community, college & career, clinical mental health). I've done work in both Student Affairs and non-profit for eating disorder awareness, and those are two fields I am majorly interested in. I love career counseling, advising, student affairs, events/programs planning, and eating disorder/mental health awareness. I'm a little torn between really wanting to have a counseling degree in college counseling/career, but also wanting to make sure to have something that is going to allow me to be versatile in the various fields. I guess I wonder, does the specific "type" matter as long as it is counseling of some kind and I'm a LPC. I really appreciate all of your advice! Talking this out, even if it is on a public forum, is super helpful! -
Hey guys! I'm starting my search for doctorate programs and I was hoping I could get some assistance/advice! I'm looking for a type of doctorate program that will be a combination of counseling and higher education. I would really like to be able to counsel on a college campus, advise, be involved in career counseling, and various other student affairs positions. I have a feeling a program like I want doesn't actually exist, but I'm going to keep trying to find something! I would love to just hear some suggestions for schools/programs that people may have heard about. I'm still trying to decide what program will be the best for me so hearing from others is super helpful! Thanks all!

I think with the 3rd one you will connect with evernote to download the data. But I had a hard time really understanding that and didn't spend too much time on that just because I didn't totally like that the pen itself wasn't recording and I would have to have my phone out in class.

Learning Disabilities/Disability Services

Danielewrites, oh I would love to talk to you more. I am an epileptic too along with attention issues! I completely understand the issues you have had with your professors, it's almost those issues exactly that I am worried about. Stress, computer screens, and lack of sleep have huge impacts on my seizures. My seizures are petit mal and myoclonic so they aren't very noticeable unless you know me, so I always just get that feeling my professors think I'm lying or something haha. -
Thanks all for the replies! I think I will probably end up going with your suggestions of the WD Passport, Crucial BBQ. I like what I've understood about it and have seen a few previous classmates with that model. My needs really are pretty basic just wanting to keep a complete backup of my files and keep all my photos on there so they aren't taking up so much space on my computer. Is it possible to backup for entire hard drive? Any suggestions on how much space I would need on the external hard drive? 1, 2, 3 TB? Thanks again!

Oh that looks like a wonderful website thank you so much proflorax! I appreciate it Lisa44201 thank you for responding! I do hope that my professors are as understanding as yours have been. I think the fear of them not being tolerant is as you said due to my own insecurities of my professors (or classmates) thinking I am looking for an easy way to get my coursework completed, since a lot of my recommendations from my neurologist are extended test time, testing in a different room, computer note taking, open book/notecards for tests, etc. It is really nice to hear from somebody who has dealt with it personally. -
Ladies, what type of bag or purse do you use for school?
ChasingMavericks replied to Student88's topic in Officially Grads
I've found that Jansport has a lot of options size wise and capabilities on their website. I just bought the Flare backpack from them and I love it. Usually backpacks are big enough that they are so easily overpacked and end up hurting your back, but this one is actually toward the smaller side but big enough you can carry your laptop and 2-3 binders. I had done the tote and purse thing previously and just found it was much more of a hassle and since I walk everywhere getting caught in the rain with a tote that doesn't zip is not such a good situation when you're carrying your laptop! -
Grad School Starts in Two Months - Unprepared?
ChasingMavericks replied to alaskagirl's topic in Officially Grads
Definitely don't kick yourself about not having your books or syllabi yet! There are so many reasons that a person may want to get all of that taken care of ahead of time, but that doesn't mean it's something that NEEDS to be done. If your professors really thought it was necessary then you would have received an email or some kind of communication letting you know. When I went on the tour of my grad school I was actually told that the professors are very accommodating letting students wait to buy their textbooks after they attend their first week of classes. Don't stress! -
I would love to hear about anybody's experience with disability services at graduate school. I know undergraduate was very accommodating and that the services at my graduate school will also have a lot of helpful options, but does anybody have experience with tolerant/non-tolerant professors?

Does anybody have any insight on external hard drives? I have been looking, but I'm afraid I don't really have much of an idea of what I'm looking at. I've been looking into the Apple Time Capsule and the WD products for Mac (passport studio, passport air, passport pro). Could anybody offer some insights on these products in terms of personal experience or experience with any other products that work well with Mac! Also just to chime in to the "supplies for grad school" list, I am in love with the livescribe pens (there's 3 kinds) that record your lecture and your notes. They even sync together so that you can tap on the note and it will start playing your lecture that aligns with that section of your notes. It's pretty nifty! I have friends who have used it for a few years through school. I can't wait to get one of those! Definitely a fun helpful "luxury" item for grad school Thanks a bunch!

Oh! Does anybody have any experience getting a membership for the gym at Scripps as a graduate student?

Wow I am really late to seeing this for some reason! Thank you unbroken thread for all the information! This might be a stretch, but do you know anything about the Amtrak going through Claremont? I saw at the metro station that out front there is an Amtrak sign as if maybe a shuttle bus goes through there or something to take you to the Ontario station? Nosferican, I am in the same boat! I won't be going with a car so I will be relying heavily on busses, walking, and biking everywhere. It definitely looks doable though, not the most walkable town, but definitely doable!

Ya I'm really not interested in listing it as freelance! No offense if anybody sees this that disagrees, but I kind of think it's a joke to list anything as freelance. I was most confused how/if to include because I do it continuously off and on. I'd rather just put it in my volunteer/leadership, but I'm not even sure what to call it.

Hey everyone! I'm having a bit of trouble identifying how to write one of my volunteer experiences on my resume. I spend some free time (ongoing) helping high school students with their application/scholarship/fafsa process for college, as well as helping peers with academic advising and grad school applications. I don't do this for a specific organization I just do it on my own because it's something I like to do. Since it's pertinent to my career interests I really want to be able to incorporate in my volunteer section of my resume (since I just do it for free). How would I go about doing that? Does anybody have experience incorporating similar types of "freelance" experience in their resume? Any bits of advice or words of wisdom helps

Have you guys received your acceptance packets via mail yet? I received word via email back in February and was hoping the packet would be here by now.
