  1. I am still waiting to hear back as well for the applied psychology masters. So hopefully I hear something whether it's good or bad soon! Just an answer would be nice But I too, like the original poster, had trouble getting in touch with the department.
  2. I'm concentration in health education and mixing in another masters in psychology so that I can focus on mental health education. As far as jobs are concerned, I really want to work on a college campus in a mentoring program/health services/student affairs where I can educate college aged students about important health concerns and information for their age, as well as all sorts of mental health information. Moving forward I want to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology so that I can meld all of this together in with being able to professionally counsel students in a variety of settings and topics.
  3. What are you interested in doing for a job? For me I want to work on a college campus so it's a good place for me with many opportunities for internships and jobs in my field. I can see why some people are so interested in the rank, but I just am not. It's all about your preference really. I applied to SDSU, University of Arizona, CSU Northridge, and CSU Fullerton.
  4. I really like what I have read and learned about the MPH program and the classes they offer for my concentration of Health Education. What was your interest for concentration? I mostly go by what I find through searching their course offerings and schedules for previous semesters, etc. I was accepted to the MPH program as well, and now just waiting to see if I was accepted to the MA Psychology program too so that I can do their dual degree program. This is a huge factor for me, but either way I will be attending. I like what I have been able to learn about the college and the town itself, but that's really all relative to what your tastes are. I had a professor in undergrad that attended Scripps and can't say enough good things about the Claremont schools as a whole, she was really excited about me applying. The one thing I have seen on this forum is that people don't like that it is more of a professional based institution rather than a research based one. For me, I prefer the professional based because I am not interested in in-depth research, only the basics I would need to do. The Claremont schools in general, as I'm sure you already know have a good reputation as a consortium. For me, one of the things I look for are the abilities to be involved on campus like in health center, etc. as I am concentrating in health education. What is it that you are kind of looking for? Also, where else are you choosing from? I am coming from the Phoenix area, so for me too it's only a 6 hour ride which will be really nice!
  5. I saw there was another person who was accepted to the MPH program. I would love to chat to anybody else accepted to the program or those who are even already attending the institution!
  6. FeelGoodDoGood thank you so much for all of this insight and information! I haven't been lucky enough to be around many people in my field of interest or who have really had the same type of particular interest of degrees, so what you were able to tell me gave me a lot to think about. Just like you, I am hoping that through my masters program my interests will become even more clear and pan themselves out. For all 4 years of my undergrad I worked in the Student Affairs/Student Development Department jumping from Career Services, Counseling, Student Life, and helping in the Deans office, as well as another activities office. I was also involved in Residence Life and I helped run a freshman mentoring program and I just absolutely loved what I did in all of those departments. I am not interested in the research side of things, I prefer working directly with students so a combination of all you described is really what I am interested in with the mentoring/advising and counseling/career center, as well as health centers/outreach. While I don't particularly want to do the administrative admissions type of stuff I would like to have a knowledge of everything. My public health focus is health education. One of my biggest reasons for mixing public health and psychology is because of my passion for mental health education. I think it would be good for colleges to have more actual staff members that have a background in psychology or a little more in-depth understanding of mental health. For me, I actually don't want to have one job for the rest of my life I really want to work in various areas of the Student Affairs department, namely the ones mentioned. I have really become interested in health outreach education on campus, as well as career services. I want the ability to be a psychologist on a campus too which is why I certainly want to receive my Psy.D. As far as the higher education, I really want to have the understanding from a taught to me perspective to go along with my personal experience to mix in with my psychology. I just really like what I see mixing these two fields. I have also looked into Educational Psychology, but only a little bit. For me, I don't think it will give me the abilities I am looking for as it is more curriculum development based and there really is not emphasis on the student affairs sector or mental health. I had thought about an MEd in Student Affairs or the sort, but then I would have 3 masters and I think I feel more silly about that prospect than I do about two doctorates! Feel free to message me and we can chat more! I would love to talk more about this.
  7. Oh I'm so glad that people really liked this thread! I'm on board with a lot of what you guys mentioned about having smaller classes sizes and location. Most of my schools were actually California State schools. I have no idea the rank of any of the schools, except just knowing they aren't high! My number one choice is Claremont Graduate University over in Claremont California and that's where I will be going in the Fall for a dual degree MPH/MA Psychology program. For one this is the only pre-made dual degree accredited program with public health and psychology so that was a huge plus for me, especially since I want to mix these too for mental health education and eventually go on to my Psy.D. The class sizes are small so I can create relationships with my professors and classmates, they have specific housing just for graduate students, and you get access to all of the other 6 schools in the Claremont Consortium. The tuition is pretty intense and I haven't heard about scholarships or anything yet, but sometimes that's just the way it is! After moving to Manhattan for two years I decided I didn't want to live in a city so I really wanted to look for a smaller town outside of a major city that still had access to public transportation (since I don't drive) and ability to get to an airport/bus/train depot easily. Claremont offered all those things. Though it wasn't a requirement, I have never attended a school that had a big presence in the community like a "college town" so learning that Claremont is like that was a little exciting. I too was wanting to be closer to my family so this gives me only 6 hours between us which is awesome. themmases I was actually surprised too that there was a such a wide population of people very set on the top schools, when in my opinion there are so many schools out there to choose from! I, like you, was actually attending a masters program previously last year. It was a media studies program at a private school in Manhattan for about one year and just like you ended up really not enjoying it. The community there was dreadful and it was like walking on eggshells everyday. I've gone to private schools all my life, I've never attended a public school in any sector, but this was like a whole different experience from any of those others.
  8. Many of the answers and topics are focused on the top 10 or top 20 schools and such, so I thought I would start a conversation for those of us that aren't attending a top ranked school. Why are we choosing these schools? What gets us excited about them? Where are you attending?
  9. Claremont Graduate University for the MPH focusing on Health Education for me and hopefully also their MA Psychology, I'm still waiting to hear about the psychology portion this week.
  10. That's actually the one program I was able to find and it felt more teacher/classroom oriented than I was hoping for. I do see that they have a higher education PhD as well though. So far I've been pretty lucky in getting two degree that end up overlapping each other with courses in my undergrad then being able to find right dual degree for me for my masters, but it looks like I will just need to suck it up in the future for any future education. Thank you for the suggestion!
  11. I thought this would be the best place to pose this question, so I hope a few of you could share your knowledge...if these programs even exist! In the Fall I am actually attending a dual degree psychology/public health masters program, but I know that once that is completed I would like to move forward with my doctorate. I have an array of interests ultimately wanting to work on a college campus in student affairs as a psychologist, career services, student life, residence life, or health education specialist. I certainly will be obtaining my doctorate in psychology, but I really want some kind of higher education...in higher education. As for the Higher Ed part I'm interested in the student affairs/leadership sector of things (obviously, but just clarifying!) I've had a hard time searching for the program combinations I am looking for, but I would really like to hear of any programs that you have heard of that are dual doctorates for Higher Ed/Psychology or that are some variation of those sectors. I didn't really want a PsyD(orPhD)/MEd since I will already have two masters at that point, but I'm willing to look into it. I would be interested in any post masters or post doc certificates also. Any programs you know of would be great
  12. I actually ended up having to medically withdraw from a graduate university due to a severe depression disorder last Fall 2013 as well leaving me with 5 classes as a W. I decided to apply to a different type of graduate program for the Fall 2014 season and so far I haven't had any problems. I was even accepted to my top school for a dual degree program. So don't be too hard on yourself or worry too much! Plus, the way I see it if a school can't understand the importance of personal health, maintenance, and balance then that isn't going to be a very conducive program. Being that you're going for psychology programs I would think they would actually have respect for you taking time to help yourself. I also have other health issues that have been part of my application explanations through my bachelors and previous graduate application season and it has never hindered my acceptance into a program that I really wanted to be a part of. I hope this helps you. Try not to really worry about that aspect of your application so much. A short explanation of leave of absence for health issues is sufficient and they shouldn't ask for anything else further than that. I wish you best of luck!
  13. Oh this is too fun For right now I must say I just need to take loads and loads of camping trips before I head off to grad school. Sooo Lake Havasu here I come!
  14. I think it never hurts to ask. Perhaps if it was a test score or something that ultimately landed you on conditional admittance then who knows perhaps they will allow you to retake the test and if you score better become a regular admit. You just never know until you ask. It's up to you which school is ultimately going to be the best for you. Personally, I think you should totally go for the conditional admit since that is your 2nd choice, now 1st choice. It will be hard going without funding for the first semester, but maybe ask about opportunities for the second semester and then you will also be eligible for the next year as well. There are definitely still options down the line to help with funding, they just aren't right here right now. I am actually a conditional admit to my 1st choice and I am pretty sure I am still going to attend. I too am hoping to move forward to a PhD afterwards so we have to strive for those 3.0s anyway! Good luck to you!
  15. It is absolutely possible! You should certainly apply. If you already have your SOPHAS done then all you will need to do is go ahead and have that designated for SDSU and even if you haven't then it is a cinch to pull all that information together. The positive thing that I've learned from SOPHAS that schools go by the date that you submitted the application to SOPHAS, not the date that SOPHAS actually verified and then sent the application to them. Also, everything for SDSU has different due dates so while the SOPHAS app is due Feb. 15th, the CSU Mentor app isn't due until March 1, and the supporting materials aren't due until April 1st. Breathe, you got this!
  16. Hey! Yes, it's my #1 choice so I made sure I had everything done by Jan 15th. Are you applying to the dual degree or just the MA? Either way, that's great! Have you applied yet?
  17. It's really a decision that is up to you. I actually applied to UCLA around the time you posted this because I thought well why not give it a shot. If I don't get in then big deal, I don't get in. There are plenty of other schools.
  18. Hello out there! Just wanted to see if anybody is also applying to the dual degree MPH/MA Psychology at CGU? Or has heard anything about that program? I haven't been able to find much on the threads about the CGU Program.
  19. Hello all! I am really hoping for a little advice on the subject here. So I will start by saying, yes I did jump into the graduate school process a little late for some personal reasons. So there, I was definitely not as prepared as most the people on this site. That's out in the open! So I realize I should have started earlier, but it's too late now. I have reached out to the 3 professors who know me and my work the best since (as many of the professors I had were online for my major courses and I'm now 2 years graduated) and I haven't heard responses from them. The first one I had been attempting to get ahold of since November, and I finally decided I needed to reach out to the other two in December when I still wasn't hearing from the first one. If they don't want to write me a LOR that's totally fine, I understand. I was able to ensure that I would have 4 LOR from other sources (director of career services at undergrad who was my supervisor for 4 years and was the dean of students when I was at the school, previous hospital internship supervisor, and 2 more from both of my current supervisors at my public health job). My first two deadlines are coming up on January 3rd and January 15th. I'm thinking with the holidays it will probably be likely I won't hear from the professors in time (plus it's now just a really late turn around anyway), so I just wanted to see others experience with applications not including a professor as a LOR. Have you had luck getting in? Have you had bad experiences? I'm a MPH applicant for health education and promotion programs. University of Arizona Jan 3 Claremont Graduate University Jan 15
  20. Hoping to revive this thread to learn more about the Claremont area from some real life experience. I haven't heard much in the way of "bad things." I would be interested to hear anything that anybody has to offer about the town and surrounding towns like Montclair, Upland, Pomona, and getting out to San Bernadino. I read some from a few years ago about grocery stores, etc. Anything changed? Good options around for groceries, coffee, etc? I've found that they have busses and the metro, that will be good enough for me to find my way around!
  21. Hello out there! Just wanted to see if anybody out there is also applying to the dual degree MPH/MA Psychology at CGU? I haven't been able to find much on the threads about the CGU Program.
  22. I've been trying not to think of a back up plan because I am hoping so much that I don't need one. There is so much more out there I want to do though if I am unable to make it to grad school in this next year. Here's my lovely list *Transform my Communications minor into a major *Enroll in cooking school or massage therapy (i've always wanted to do both!) *Bum around at home, I do love the sun *Take the last few classes to finish an Addiction Therapy Certificate *Find a job throuhg CoolWorks and get to travel! If we really think about it there are plenty of opportunities out there for each of us if grad school isn't exactly the right option right now. Something is going to happen for each of us
  23. What exactly can you even do with a Women's Studies degree?
  24. Trying so hard not to obsess! It doesn't help that for whatever reason my code isn't working to check on my application processing at SCSU...they are seriously causing anxiety haha Applied: The New School in New York Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven Hope to hear from at least one of these by February 1st before I have to apply to other schools as well. There are my top two!
  25. Is anybody applying to the New School or Southern Connecticut State University?
