  1. Has anyone received a negative letter yet? I'm haven't received anything and I'm concerned they, in contrast to previous years, have only mailed positive letters.
  2. People considering applying to Toronto should contact current students to see how well continental is being received these days over there. Since Franks and Schlosser left, I hear there's been a sea change.
  3. Phil Imprint is a fantastic journal. It's also fantastically hard to publish in since PI is more selective than roughly comparable peer publications like PPR, Phil Studies, Synthese, etc.
  4. I went to TO's MA, and had a positive experience there. But they work their MA students to the bone. If you do epistemology, Patrick Rysiew at UVic is very good and you would likely have him all to yourself, which is important. However, Jennifer Nagel is teaching a grad class on epistemology next year at TO, and a letter from her would be more weighty IMHO. What lovephil says is true, but true of any 1 yr MA program: you have to impress the right people in 3 months in classes with PhD students in their 4th and 5th years -- its hard to shine in a classroom populated by genuine specialists. As for mind/cognition, there's no real comparison b/w TO and elsewhere in Canada, besides UBC. Mohan Matthen is fantastic, as is Benj Hellie.
  5. Can anyone who's been rejected from Columbia tell me whether their application on the GSAS website still says "submitted"? I applied, and am expecting rejection, but I haven't heard anything, while it seems they've accepted, waitlisted, and rejected many. Thanks.
  6. My admission to Toronto is explained by the fact that I have an MA from there, with strong letters from senior Toronto faculty, and I won the departmental essay competition. I don't think I would have been admitted without these factors.
  7. A little, but not as much as writing sample, GPA, letter writers & pedigree, etc. On a par with GRE, say.
  8. Why care about leiter rank if you're doing continental? I don't do continental, but my understanding is that those who do discount or ignore the leiter report.
  9. I can tell you that TO is behind on their administrative stuff related to funding, so I wouldn't cross them off just yet.
  10. Just to balance things, I'm an ex-St Andrews (MLitt 2011) and I've been met with reasonable success. PM me with questions if need be.
  11. I'm a Canadian too, with similar prejudices. Austin is awesome. Totally unlike Houston or San Antonio. Seriously, very cool town to live in. I'd be astounded if others disagree.
  12. Take solace in the fact that you'll likely get a Texas offer. But I know the value of a bird in hand...
  13. I'm going to OK on my Columbia rejection as I'm a relatively bad fit for the dept. I'm going to be crushed by my Mich rejection, as I'm an excellent fit there.
  14. I would send an updated CV to the grad. sec.
  15. By way of consolation, precisely the same thing happened to me last year with my Yale PhD app. in philosophy. I arranged things with the dept. secretary and all turned out well (or, well enough, as the late letter was included in my app. but I wasn't granted admission.)
