  1. I finally called Rachel and asked about Italy. She said we would probably hear back early next week because the commission offices are closed, and they need authorization from the commission to send out the notices. So they know, they just can't tell us. UGH!

Are you kidding me... ma dai!!

  2. Congrats! Its good to hear that some news has started to roll out again. I like to live vicariously through everyone's good news as I sit here and obsessively bite my finger nails and hit the refresh button on my mailbox.

    Exactly

  3. I see that in 2010 - 2011 a Portugal ETA Alternate was later accepted for an ETA in Morocco...

Anyone know why something like this would happen?

A little bummed out about this semi-rejection e-mail, but glad to be a part of this wonderful group!

I hope it works out for you in the end, whether in Portugal or Morocco!

  4. recommended for a full grant to Italy. not expecting to hear anything anytime soon, but it's good to know i'm not the only one dying from the anticipation!

    Lemons, what is your project?

  5. Here's what's going to happen: you talk with your doctor -> she signs some stuff -> you send it to Fulbright -> special designated Fulbright medical person looks at it -> he's like, "aight, she's good to go" -> you get an awesome grant.

Not really sure what the issue is?

I have to agree. Fulbright is not going to violate HIPAA laws by sharing your medical records inappropriately, although I am sensitive to the desire to protect one's privacy.

  6. What's your project in Italy? Just caught your screen name there.

Archival project related to my dissertation. I would be in Florence mainly, but also Siena and Arezzo. I am interested in noble/knightly culture in Florentine Tuscany in the 13th and 14th centuries. I examine changes to the institutions and ideology of knighthood during this period, as well as cultural exchange between the Florentine elite and the elite of north-western Europe and other Italian states. I'm also interested in the practice of exile (extremely prevalent in medieval Italy) and the impact exile has on how these knights and nobles defined themselves. That's the simple version :P

Edited because I'm typing on my phone and the touch-screen keyboard is annoying.

  7. well said.

I have to admit I didn't think I'd make it this far in my wildest dreams... I'm trying to remember how elated I was when finding out I made it... :)

Are you waiting to hear for news this year?

    If so, good luck!!

Yes, I'm a finalist for a full grant to Italy. Thanks and good luck to you as well!

  8. I. agree.

I may be hired soon as an Associate Director for Study Abroad, a job I'm super excited about potentially getting, however if chosen for Fulbright I'll more than likely have to decline job offer as I'd be taking off to Portugal (unless we could work out a temporary thing)

I'm even more worried should I get a rejection... telling that rejection story over and over to co-workers, friends, family is going to be horrible. :(

I should tell mine to do the same!!

    Sounds like fun... "REJECT!!"

Yup, Portugal ETA... I think I'm the only one on the forum so this if fun! I'm living vicariously through everyone elses (Argentina, UK, etc..) acceptances..

    Hopefully soon!!

    =)

You're not a "reject" if you make it to the final round but are not selected for the Fulbright. You are a finalist. This has a certain amount of prestige attached to it and most people advise you to put it in your CV, especially if you are going into academia. With that being said, a rejection still hurts (as I found out last year), especially if you are counting on the fellowship to make possible the archival research you need for your dissertation.

  9. So sorry, minorcharacter! That's horrible. Any chance that the bleakness of the moment can be fed constructively into the writing of the novel?

I know it's little consolation, but I'm at the (adjunct) professor level, and over the past few years I have had over fifty rejections for professor jobs before getting this Fulbright junior faculty grant. My Oxford D.Phil didn't quite open doors as quickly as I had hoped. My encouragement is to persist. The fact that you were a finalist here means that your work is excellent. Also, we are not privy to all the criteria used to make the selections. I have a hunch that funding constraints, geographical distribution, and spreading the awards among various subjects means final selection must be based at least in part on several contingencies over which none of us has any control.

Garden- What did you get your PhD in?

  10. Just found the following information for full grants to Italy:

The grant amounts to € 13.800. This sum includes a maintenance allowance

    of € 9.900, a settling-in allowance of € 1.300, a housing allowance of € 1.500

and a travel allowance of € 1.100. The grant is offered for one academic year

only and cannot be renewed for subsequent years

  11. Stipend amounts vary HUGELY from country to country, even within regions. I know of people in certain countries who are struggling to afford basic living costs--and on the other hand, Fulbrighters who are able to save thousands of dollars due to extremely generous stipends.

I've heard the same thing from various friends who were Fulbrighters. Some had to take out loans just to live, even ascetically, which I think is a shame.

  12. I'm at work right now and I can't seem to stay away!!

Quick question: Anyone worried about leaving loved ones behind, if chosen for a Fulbright?

I'll miss the boyfriend terribly if I'm gone, and hearing that long distance relationships never work is troubling. I truly believe we'll make it work and just feel this is just a little separation before we're together again.

I'm getting married in June, so if I manage to get the Fulbright I'll be leaving my wife behind. She'll come and visit, but it's not the same. Fortunately we have experience being apart, as I've spent upwards of 2 1/2 months at a time away from her in Italy. Skype makes things so much easier!
