  1. Well, sadly I am starting to think about re-applying already, definitely not procrastinating as much this time! I think I am in much better shape though, as this time last year I had no idea even what kind of programs to look at. I am revising my list of schools; definitely reapplying to my favorites of IUB, Michigan and Harvard, but unsure where else to apply (subfield: Central Asia). I have been poking around on the websites, but if anyone has any insights on Stanford, Columbia or other schools (I am not interested in Georgetown, Yale, Kansas, or UNC) I would greatly appreciate it! Anyone else applying or reapplying? On a related note, I am really looking forward to SWSEEL this summer! I will be studying Russian, please feel free to message me if you are going to be there too! I am also hoping to get a glimpse of their program as I was not able to visit earlier during the application cycle. I hope to meet Dr. Kenney, as I had exchanged some e-mails with him and he was incredibly helpful and seemed very kind!
  2. Hope everyone is doing well with their decisions / making arrangements to start their new programs!! Congratulations to everyone has made a decision, too!! I just found out I was awarded a Fulbright ETA to Azerbaijan, so I'll be re-applying all over again in a few short months (my poor bank account...although I am asking all of the schools that I will be re-applying to if they will hold onto my GRE scores at least, haha) Still waiting to hear from SWSEEL. I think that, if they don't have a FLAS to offer me, I will just spend the summer at a local collegewhich has a summer program because I could commute there.
  3. I know , I must have just been thinking of another country or just non-Western but European countries
  4. Yes, I did just hear when I posted, the e-mail came in 4:15 EST on Friday afternoon! I had no idea when to expect, last year was late April I think and the year before late March. I am SO happy they got out the notifications for this award though because I had also applied to grad programs and I was able to decline them all before the deadline, hopefully making someone else's day!! I saw a bunch of other Slavic/former Soviet states had sent out notifications, like Romania and Poland I think, so I was really hoping that they would all do them together, so hopefully Armenia will send out a notification to you!! Good luck!! I am so excited to live and travel in the region!!! Again, good luck to everyone else!!!
  5. Awarded an ETA to Azerbaijan! [my old forum name was clairea12 for the spreadsheet] Thecommandor: Good luck on your status! No idea about the chances, but I hope that someone declines and you are able to take their spot! What kind of research did your propose? Congratulations to everyone for making it so far!
  6. I would take it too, if I were you! 4th year Russian (you will have to take a test and complete an entrance interview to truly place into it) at SLI (from what I understood) was focused on talking about subjects (intellectual discussions) and lots (and lots) of reading. I was kind of surprised at the weirdness of the dates, they give you an offer on a Thursday and you have until the Monday to decide? (I was awarded a paltry scholarship, so I'll pass on SLI this year, haha) Fingers crossed for SWSEEL!!
  7. Sounds like a very difficult decision, ali, and I think melodoychelovek brings up some great points! If you are thinking about a joint degree in public health, maybe you can see if Kansas offers anything like that - maybe the CREES program would be willing to help you work in some classes to get the degree done sooner. Additionally, you probably wouldn't need to take as many language classes so therre would be more space in your two years to get in classes toward that degree.
  8. I may be mistaken, but I think both SWSEEL and SLI have money for BCS, have you e-mailed the program coordinator people? The one at SWSEEL has been very, very nice over e-mail and the one at Pitt is just awesome, so I would definitely reach out to them and ask!! I also meant to add that I did ask my one recommender for the regular application to submit a modified letter of her recommendation geared specifically toward FLAS, my language recommender wrote a letter just for FLAS, and I also asked another professor (who has not written my graduate application recommendations) to write a letter for FLAS, so all of my recommendations were tailored for my FLAS applications. Not sure if this extra tailoring helped extra or not. I do go to a small-ish school (currently a senior), and I get a lot of attention from professors/have been building relationships with many professors, including my department heads, since I was a freshman/sophomore.
  9. Hi everyone! I got a FLAS from Michigian and the WCED fellowship (for $15,000). I was also rejected for a FLAS from Wisconsin (this process is so weird, ammiright?) So I'm try to decide between my alternate status for FLAS at Harvard, and the FLAS at Indiana, and the FLAS/WCED at Michigian...an embarassement of riches. The good news is that I'll have to turn down (at least) one of the FLAS's, so hopefully they will go to one of you gradcafers! I plan to make my decision at least a week before the deadline so hopefully that makes a difference. Since I am planning to work after completing a master's, I think I am leaning toward Harvard (also Boston is a better location for my partner and it is closer to home for me) but I am trying to seriously consider Michigian....so many things to think about! Still waiting to hear from SWSEEL and UPitt SLI re:funding...here's hoping we all make out well on that!!
  10. Stephanie M, I Pmed you, but basically there are a lot of MA programs in Russian, East European and Eurasian studies. Many big state research schools have them as well as the highly ranked schools (i.e. Ivys and other prestigious schools like NYU or Georgetown). They all have different specialities but most of the programs are interdisciplinary, so if you want to focus on say politics then maybe look at a school that is also well known for politics. You should look into FLAS funding as many of these programs require you to learn a leanguage, so you can get paid to go to school. In other news, I was waitlisted at Georgetown. It's kind of weird because the e-mail subject line says "Admission to the MA program at GU CERES" but I am on the "priority" wait list. [The director just responded to an email I sent, she said they had an acceptance rate of 28% which makes it the most competitive year of the last 9 years] So I have officially heard back from all of my schools (7)... now it is just time to wait to hear about funding! I hope everyone else is holding up okay! Is anyone going to the region over the summer or made decisions on language programs? I have been accepeted to SWSEEL and still need to apply to UPitt's SLI, which due by March 16
  11. Congrats so far everyone! I also got into UMich and just got into HARVARD I am DYING from shock and happiness. I literally cannot believe this
  12. Recieved an accpetance to Indiana! So excited, it is at the top of my realistic (aka nondream schools) list! Good luck to everyone else who applied! For the summer I am applying to SWSEEL and Pitt's SLI. I applied for FLAS funding from both programs, and also applied for FLAS funding from the other schools I applied to
  13. Congrats so far everyone! I just got into UNC-CH, they sent me an e-mail, no link to the website but they said "We have recently found out that there has been delay in notification by the Graduate School. We apologize for this delay and believe you should hear officially in the next week." They said all funding decisions will be out in early March (vs Wisconsin, who said I did not get departmental funding but FLAS funding notification will be March)
  14. Wisconsin-Madison's online application status checker updated for me and one other person who posted on the results board - recommended for admission, just have to wait for the graduate school to review the file. Now that the admissions are coming in, I am even more excited for funding awards to be decided! Good luck to everyone!!
  15. I got accepted to Kansas too! So excited, it's my first notification and if I got some money, I would LOVE to go there (although to be honest I would love to go to any of the schools to which I applied, I think they are all awesome programs). Can't wait to hear from other schools and also hear about funding.
