  1. Well, sadly I am starting to think about re-applying already, definitely not procrastinating as much this time! I think I am in much better shape though, as this time last year I had no idea even what kind of programs to look at. I am revising my list of schools; definitely reapplying to my favorites of IUB, Michigan and Harvard, but unsure where else to apply (subfield: Central Asia). I have been poking around on the websites, but if anyone has any insights on Stanford, Columbia or other schools (I am not interested in Georgetown, Yale, Kansas, or UNC) I would greatly appreciate it! Anyone else applying or reapplying? On a related note, I am really looking forward to SWSEEL this summer! I will be studying Russian, please feel free to message me if you are going to be there too! I am also hoping to get a glimpse of their program as I was not able to visit earlier during the application cycle. I hope to meet Dr. Kenney, as I had exchanged some e-mails with him and he was incredibly helpful and seemed very kind!
  2. Hope everyone is doing well with their decisions / making arrangements to start their new programs!! Congratulations to everyone has made a decision, too!! I just found out I was awarded a Fulbright ETA to Azerbaijan, so I'll be re-applying all over again in a few short months (my poor bank account...although I am asking all of the schools that I will be re-applying to if they will hold onto my GRE scores at least, haha) Still waiting to hear from SWSEEL. I think that, if they don't have a FLAS to offer me, I will just spend the summer at a local collegewhich has a summer program because I could commute there.
  3. I know , I must have just been thinking of another country or just non-Western but European countries
  4. Yes, I did just hear when I posted, the e-mail came in 4:15 EST on Friday afternoon! I had no idea when to expect, last year was late April I think and the year before late March. I am SO happy they got out the notifications for this award though because I had also applied to grad programs and I was able to decline them all before the deadline, hopefully making someone else's day!! I saw a bunch of other Slavic/former Soviet states had sent out notifications, like Romania and Poland I think, so I was really hoping that they would all do them together, so hopefully Armenia will send out a notification to you!! Good luck!! I am so excited to live and travel in the region!!! Again, good luck to everyone else!!!
  5. Awarded an ETA to Azerbaijan! [my old forum name was clairea12 for the spreadsheet] Thecommandor: Good luck on your status! No idea about the chances, but I hope that someone declines and you are able to take their spot! What kind of research did your propose? Congratulations to everyone for making it so far!
  6. I would take it too, if I were you! 4th year Russian (you will have to take a test and complete an entrance interview to truly place into it) at SLI (from what I understood) was focused on talking about subjects (intellectual discussions) and lots (and lots) of reading. I was kind of surprised at the weirdness of the dates, they give you an offer on a Thursday and you have until the Monday to decide? (I was awarded a paltry scholarship, so I'll pass on SLI this year, haha) Fingers crossed for SWSEEL!!
  7. Sounds like a very difficult decision, ali, and I think melodoychelovek brings up some great points! If you are thinking about a joint degree in public health, maybe you can see if Kansas offers anything like that - maybe the CREES program would be willing to help you work in some classes to get the degree done sooner. Additionally, you probably wouldn't need to take as many language classes so therre would be more space in your two years to get in classes toward that degree.
  8. I may be mistaken, but I think both SWSEEL and SLI have money for BCS, have you e-mailed the program coordinator people? The one at SWSEEL has been very, very nice over e-mail and the one at Pitt is just awesome, so I would definitely reach out to them and ask!! I also meant to add that I did ask my one recommender for the regular application to submit a modified letter of her recommendation geared specifically toward FLAS, my language recommender wrote a letter just for FLAS, and I also asked another professor (who has not written my graduate application recommendations) to write a letter for FLAS, so all of my recommendations were tailored for my FLAS applications. Not sure if this extra tailoring helped extra or not. I do go to a small-ish school (currently a senior), and I get a lot of attention from professors/have been building relationships with many professors, including my department heads, since I was a freshman/sophomore.
  9. Hi everyone! I got a FLAS from Michigian and the WCED fellowship (for $15,000). I was also rejected for a FLAS from Wisconsin (this process is so weird, ammiright?) So I'm try to decide between my alternate status for FLAS at Harvard, and the FLAS at Indiana, and the FLAS/WCED at Michigian...an embarassement of riches. The good news is that I'll have to turn down (at least) one of the FLAS's, so hopefully they will go to one of you gradcafers! I plan to make my decision at least a week before the deadline so hopefully that makes a difference. Since I am planning to work after completing a master's, I think I am leaning toward Harvard (also Boston is a better location for my partner and it is closer to home for me) but I am trying to seriously consider Michigian....so many things to think about! Still waiting to hear from SWSEEL and UPitt SLI re:funding...here's hoping we all make out well on that!!
  10. Stephanie M, I Pmed you, but basically there are a lot of MA programs in Russian, East European and Eurasian studies. Many big state research schools have them as well as the highly ranked schools (i.e. Ivys and other prestigious schools like NYU or Georgetown). They all have different specialities but most of the programs are interdisciplinary, so if you want to focus on say politics then maybe look at a school that is also well known for politics. You should look into FLAS funding as many of these programs require you to learn a leanguage, so you can get paid to go to school. In other news, I was waitlisted at Georgetown. It's kind of weird because the e-mail subject line says "Admission to the MA program at GU CERES" but I am on the "priority" wait list. [The director just responded to an email I sent, she said they had an acceptance rate of 28% which makes it the most competitive year of the last 9 years] So I have officially heard back from all of my schools (7)... now it is just time to wait to hear about funding! I hope everyone else is holding up okay! Is anyone going to the region over the summer or made decisions on language programs? I have been accepeted to SWSEEL and still need to apply to UPitt's SLI, which due by March 16
  11. Congrats so far everyone! I also got into UMich and just got into HARVARD I am DYING from shock and happiness. I literally cannot believe this
  12. Recieved an accpetance to Indiana! So excited, it is at the top of my realistic (aka nondream schools) list! Good luck to everyone else who applied! For the summer I am applying to SWSEEL and Pitt's SLI. I applied for FLAS funding from both programs, and also applied for FLAS funding from the other schools I applied to
  13. Congrats so far everyone! I just got into UNC-CH, they sent me an e-mail, no link to the website but they said "We have recently found out that there has been delay in notification by the Graduate School. We apologize for this delay and believe you should hear officially in the next week." They said all funding decisions will be out in early March (vs Wisconsin, who said I did not get departmental funding but FLAS funding notification will be March)
  14. Wisconsin-Madison's online application status checker updated for me and one other person who posted on the results board - recommended for admission, just have to wait for the graduate school to review the file. Now that the admissions are coming in, I am even more excited for funding awards to be decided! Good luck to everyone!!
  15. I got accepted to Kansas too! So excited, it's my first notification and if I got some money, I would LOVE to go there (although to be honest I would love to go to any of the schools to which I applied, I think they are all awesome programs). Can't wait to hear from other schools and also hear about funding.
  16. Reccomended for an ETA to Azerbaijan! Congrats to everyone also reccomended and I'm sorry for everyone else Good luck though!
  17. UMich was so long, you can't skip forward (only back, one page at a time, for 14 total pages) and SO MANY extra essays and fill ins. Also needed a SOP and a PS, which I didn't even realize until I got to page 13....then had to write it and then go all the back back through the 12 pages to upload it the next day. I agree that Harvard's was bad too, I hated filling in "relevant courses." I don't know what they'll think is relevant as opposed to related (especially for an interdisicplinary program)! I also dislike those that require you to submit your app before they email your references. In fact that made me so unhappy that I missed the sections (buried) on the websites saying that your reccomenders can submit paper letters before that date. But oh well, it did motivate me to get my apps in sooner than they might otherwise have been.
  18. Email the dept. secreatary and ask about the status of your application, saying that some of your reccomenders may have gotten their letters in late. But don't do it the day after you submit online. Even if the reccomendors have already submitted, the computers may need time to update. Same with the GRE. E-mail them to let them know its coming. And I would delete the third email if they say "we want 2" (and email your reccomendor to tell them not to bother so they don't hit some internet wall when trying to submit), although I'm sure a program would see 2 letters as complete if they are requring 2.
  19. The ETS will send out scores from the last five years when you request a score report. Most schools will tell you on their website that they accept scores from the last 5 years but depending on the program, they may want more recent scores, like from the last two years as Eigen said.
  20. I am writing a "concise" academic statement of purpose for a MA regional studies program. In it, I partly explain my undergraduate language study, and I say I am planning to apply to two well known summer programs to make up for lacking undergraduate course availabilty. However, I am not applying to the program run by a school to which I am applying (it starts the same Monday my spring finals start). To mention this in the text of the SOP would be quite a meander from the the current flow and I was wondering if I should put it in a footnote? Or should I put it in an "additional information" section? (I don't have anything else to put in such a section) I am worried about not mentioning it because they might think I haven't done my homework about the program. Any advice on including an explanatory footnote would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.
  21. If I were in your position, I would contact the programs right away to correct the mistake. Without any inside knowledge in your programs (as I am really only familiar with the MAs I am applying for), I would assume a program might use the discrepancy as a reason to throw out application (I doubt they would contact you to ask as they have a large volume of other apps to sift through and would rather clear out a "dishonest" app or one with errors than try to give you a chance to explain). I also don't now if they do their own calculations but I think a .25 difference might be visible enough to the committe to make them calculatre it. That said, I doubt it would be a big deal to them if you just contact them. I don't think that's a mistake that would really hurt your application But if you did get in under "false pretenses" then you might run into some trouble if anyone finds out.
  22. Hi everyone, I'm applying for REES MAs for the fall, language Russian but area of interest Central Asia/Caucauses (also applied for a Fulbright ETA to Azerbaijan). I find these programs so interesting and exciting! They combine everything I love learning about the region (culture, language, history, economics, IR, politics, government... ) I did the UPitt-Moscow State program last year, and it was really good. They have FLAS funding (I, a nonpitt undergrad, won a full scholarship) and also have some smaller academic/merit scholarships too (especially if you got to Pitt). We spent 5 weeks in intensive language training in Pitt then 5 weeks in Moscow and I got 10 credits for the whole thing. We stayed at MSU in the big old building which was quite an experience. The program may undergo some changes (swtiching out directors, a lot of misbehavior of some very immature "students" [as in they weren't interested in learning] this summer), but I think it will be better in terms of language and instruction as a result. I am behind on Russian (I took two years at my small liberal arts school) then finished the Intermediate Level at Pittsburgh so I plan to apply for summer programs. I was thinking UPitt again (just the Pittsburgh one this time for me, since it's only 8 weeks) and Indiana. I saw that Bryn Mawr has a program, and I was wondering if anyone has every heard anything about that? Are there other programs people would suggest? I might try Middlebury if I get into grad school and can get the department to FLAS fund me for it, but difficult to say. Plus these applications are expensive so I don't want to throw out apps for places I can't afford to go (Indiana's app is $130 I think!!!! but Pitts was only $20 last year). Also Pitt's secretary for the program is reallly nice, shoot her an email if you have any questions!! When I first found it I emailed her to ask if I would be competitve and she was like APPLY APPLY you'd be a perfect fit! So I did and it was Anyone have any experiences with Indiana yay or nay?? Indiana is much cheaper than Pitt if paying out of pocket ($2000 on tuition) but for me, greater travel expenses would be associated with going there. But it may also be of better quality?? So many questions, sorry, haha. As for schools, I am applying to Indiana (not Pitt tho, I didn't like it that much) as well as other big state schools and two reaches (all from the FLAS list, haha). I really need to finish up my apps (I have one dream and my one safety left as well as another stateschool)...whoops. At this point, I would love to go to any of them, except maybe my safety unless they fund me haha. My stats are 3.92 overall GPA and 4.0 in my majors (Economics, Political Science) in the Honors program at my unremarkable medium size liberal arts safety college, 164Q, 158V 5.5AW and great LORs, two from my dept heads (have been close with them for the last four years, both have put me up for competitive department scholarships which I won) and one from the only Russian scholar in the place, haha, a great history teacher. My SOP....who knows. Hopefully good So good luck to everyone! Can't wait to hear to where everyone is admitted.
  23. I also applied for Russian, ajollycossack, but intermediate level (I assume anyway haha). I got my first rejection last year so I'm hoping for a different tune this time! My application was much better haha more of a focus on how I plan to conintue language learning. I'm a graduating senior (looking at REES M.A. programs for the fall, hopefully)
  24. Just a side note, the date of the OP was a technial US holiday (post office and banks were closed) so they might not have been in, and they are probably updating a lot of admissions stuff this week (schools and offices may have been closed from Dec 23 - Jan 2 so that's a lot of things they might have to sort through)
  25. As soon as the test is done and you get your score on the screen, you then have the option of reporting it to 4 schools (So you should go in knowing what schools to send it to). I don't know if schools have a policy to keep them, but many schools keep the records electronically or you can just always send an email to programs you want to send your scores to and ask them if they have a policy regarding early sent scores.
