I guess i am curous as how to shape my electives and the couple courses i can take outside of the religion department? as well as if i should focus my thesis on a soc topic (and what they like to see)? and the best way to spend my summer off in between years? mystic rose, you mentioned applying to 3 religion and one soc of religion, which ones?

i second that. religious studies is more historical and biblically focused where sociology of religion is more practical study of religion and its effects on society. you can also pair it with studying economics, non-profits, etc.. thanks for the answers guys. i did my undergrad in economics at university of chicago, which was very quant based, so hopefully that background will work well with a MTS when heading into a soc program. any advice would be great as far as things to do while getting my MTS (taking a few grad courses in the soc department, finding a prof to work with, etc..) or things you have learned in the application process that you wish you knew two years ago or so.. thanks!

i am heading into a MTS degree in the fall. my focus/interests are in ethics, society, and the sociology of religion. when looking at phd programs i am curious if the MTS can lead natually into a phd in sociology with a focus on religion (which i have seen at schools like emory, duke, texas, ucsb, vandy, etc..)? and what steps would be best to take while a MTS to best prepare me and my resume for that path? any ideas ladies and gents? i would appreciate it..

i have noticed that spanish is also included on most lists along with german and french. does it hold as much weight? will having lived in mexico for a year and having a decent grasp on the language help my case? you mentioned you didnt take languages in your masters program for what now seems like foolish reasons. i am heading into my MTS this fall, what would be your suggestions for someone like me in a MTS program that doesnt require a language but i plan on going for a phd? and lastly (sorry i am new to all of this), you mentioned you finshed your masters then the next fall were talking to yale. do most people finish their masters then take the next year to apply (while working?)? or do they apply at the beginning of their second year? thanks for any help!

i am going to focus on christianity and culture (with a leaning toward the sociology of religion) and would like to move into a phd program centered around ethics and society (which both emory and vandy offer) or possibly a sociology department with a major focus on religion (is that likely/possible out of an MTS?). the MTS program at both schools seemed pretty similiar but i would love to hear what you think about that since you looked at both. i was awarded a 75% merit based scholarship to vandy and nothing so far from emory (do you have any idea if they will offer to match another school?) but i did not apply for need based aid. any advice would be great. how was your experience at emory? did you do an MTS or MDiv? what are you studying now and where? thanks!

i figured that was the case with the scholarship, but the need for my forms threw me off. I am going to attempt to contact the department as well this week, so let me know if you have any luck, and who you talk to.

dev35869, hey, i was also admitted with a similiar funding package. have you found out more about the program? I was accepted to the MTS? you? also, with the funding, i was a little confused: it was merit based, but it was stated i had to submit my financial aid forms as well. is the merit scholarship only given if need is demonstrated? interested to hear anything you have learned. what other schools/programs are you looking at?

Hey Folks. First time poster. I was admitted to the MTS program at both Vandy and Candler. On the surface both programs seem similiar as far as required courses, credit hours, course offerings, location, ect... I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight not given in the schools catalog such as reputation in the overall field, placement in PhD programs after the MTS, and the differences between a university based divinity school vs. a methodist theological school. Any information would be appreciated, especially information on the PhD placement. Thanks!
