Can you tell me a bit more about public history opportunities at Yale that you've heard of? I'm actually leaning toward UCLA because of public history-- they have a cluster of courses in public history, a professor who heads the Autry Museum of the American West, and really great link-ups with museums in the LA area, so I'd be able to get some seriously good experience. As for pros and cons, I love Los Angeles, I had a wonderful time at UCLA when I visited, there's a wide array of professors I could work with (some of which are great fits for me), there are a lot of public history opportunities, and I really felt good about the department and the kind of work I could do. For Yale, the program is obviously great (and higher ranked than UCLA), they gave me a bit more money, my potential adviser is an incredible fit for my interests... but I honestly do not like New Haven, and the city I live in (and the things I would do outside of graduate school itself) is a very important factor to me.

Hi everyone! Hate to chime in after neglecting this thread for so long, but I am in a serious predicament in debating between schools (in my case, UCLA and Yale). I'm doing 19th century history, and want to get into public history on the side as well. If anyone would like to offer advice (or direct me somewhere to help with this!) I would so appreciate it. I have no idea what to do, even after an extensive pros and cons list! Thanks all!

CONGRATS!!! If you don't mind sharing, what's your subfield? That is amazing news. I hope you go celebrate today!

Anyone want to claim the other Harvard admit from today? Ahhhhhhh, I'm dying to hear from them... also, Safferz, SERIOUSLY, CONGRATS!

for people waiting on Berkeley-- checked their website today, got a rejection. (I think we can mostly assume that if you haven't gotten an acceptance from them, it's an implicit rejection, but check the website!) Kind of a bitter pill to swallow, since it was my undergrad institution...but in MUCH BETTER NEWS: got into Yale!

Not sure of the answer about flying out, but they do fund all students. The stipend is not going to be like that of an Ivy, most likely; Berkeley is a public school in a state undergoing a major and massive financial crisis in general and in higher education in particular. So...to whomever was talking about negotiating, the UC system is financially devastated right now, and Berkeley in particular--Berkeley tuition has been raised something like 45% in the past two years for undergraduates. Bargaining for money is probably not going to get you very far.

Thank you, and sure thing! Ask away.

I was the UVA admit! I don't want to publicize too many details, but feel free to PM me and I'll answer your questions.

For some reason, UCLA decisions "coming very soon" makes me incredibly nervous! Thanks for the info.!
-
I wonder if this means Berkeley's decisions will be released comparably late?

Thanks! I just did one. Amazing how quick that was.

Quick question to y'all: anyone know if we need to fill out a FAFSA? All the programs I applied to guarantee fellowships, but it occurred to me I may want to do a FAFSA in any case...
-
What strategies have y'all been using to stave off thinking about admissions?! I realize that this is an impossible endeavor, but...

Congrats to Safferz for the interview and teachgrad for the acceptance!

Thanks so much! From what my POI told me, I think that the adcomm. will be whittling down the current short-list to the admits, and then informing them mid-February. This may only be the case, however, for American history; I don't know if this is applicable to the whole department or just my field. Hope that helps!

I'd been in contact with two professors, but only in a casual way -- I exchanged maybe one or two emails each with both of them.

Thank you! Nerve-wracking but incredibly exciting.

Yep, an Americanist.

Hey everyone, Long-time lurker of these forums, and upon reading some of y'alls wonder at the Yale interviews, thought I'd help. I'm one of the posters for the interviews and had a phone conversation today with my POI after receiving an email from him last week. I was told that I'm on a short-list and the interviews are now part of the official process (for the first time, this year). If anyone wants more information, feel free to ask. cheers!
