  1. I will definitely be going. While I won't be presenting, as far as I know, I'll (thankfully) be funded by my department. I completely agree with you: the conference will be one to remember. Unless something like this happens again, I don't think we'll ever see this many music scholar located in one condensed area for quite some time.

I may as well chime in too. I'm heading to UofT and I'm also looking for housemates as well. I'm not quite sure of my funding distribution nor will I be able to get to Canada until August. But hey, I'm open as of the moment.
  3. The reject wasn't me, but here's the link for UCLA admission decisions: https://www.gradadmi...ssionStatus.asp There has been already one UCLA ethno admit, so I highly doubt I would get in. But alas, mine still says nothing. Also, I saw a Chicago reject, yet no word for me yet. As far as I've seen, no Ethno related results have been put out yet, rejects or otherwise, which is kind against tradition. Anyway, I'm not hopeful for either, but the process still puts butterflies in my stomach.
  4. I'll agree with that statement, snes. When I talked to a professor at UCLA before I applied to schools, they said they were really uncertain what their funding would be like this upcoming year. So with a sign like that, it may not be good. Which is a shame, as it's really a good school (though obviously I'm predicting a rejection, as there is an ethno admit and it's not me).
  5. Alas, my rejection letter finally arrived from Harvard. @lowmezzo: I'm not sure if anyone from this forum has applied to UMD, nor do I know anyone personally. In general, performance people aren't too common on this forum, so your chances of getting an accurate response here might be limited. Though best of luck nonetheless!
  6. Shhhh, comp12. Don't ruin this glitter of hope that I have about a Harvard admittance and not just because it takes a while for mail to get here.
  7. To my surprise, I did not receive the dreaded thin envelope from Harvard. Nor will I receive it today, since my school's mailroom already sorted out today's mail. Though I'm not yet convinced that I was spared from the massacre. So I'm going to continually dread my mailbox for the next month (which is quite sad as my mailbox is usually a happy place because the only mail I ever get is cookies or other food-related care packages).
  8. I would think this would be fairly significant, as I applied to Harvard for ethno as well and haven't heard anything from them yet. But it seems like wait-lists and rejects get sent by mail, so I'll be dreading my mailbox now, as more than likely I'll receive a reject. But some logic notes: - Ethno, Musicology, and Theory rejections are received at around the same time, much like wait-lists; therefore, I can assume that the three sectors make their selections at the same time - There are other strong applicants on this forum who have applied to Harvard. They have yet to hear anything. This can lead us to believe: 1) There will be a Harvard massacre, much like a Princeton one. 2) The has been a Harvard wait-list flood, which we will hear about today or tomorrow. 3) Perhaps Harvard will notify acceptances soon. Then again, I'm probably reading into this too much for my liking. I've heard varying opinions about the Ethno department; and Harvard isn't even in my top three choices, whereas I've been accepted to 2/3 so far.
  9. Sooo...I guess we can call today another fruitless day for music admissions?
  10. I also got a "No" from Penn. Granted I figured this as I didn't receive and interview. Though I applied to this school on a whim and actually regretted doing so from the beginning. So I assume that may leave @snes with potentially good news, knowing the newfound UPenn rejections. Perhaps? Though 15 minutes later, I received a "Yes" from Toronto, which was in my top four choices. While I am ecstatic, the dual emotional swings now put me back to my neutral emotional state that I had when I woke up.
  11. Yuck. After reading Catalyst77's post, I immediately got the same notification from Berkeley. I kind of figured there have already been acceptances to the program posted. However, I'm not too bothered; it wasn't in my top five choices and I've already been admitted to my top choice. Everything else has been quiet on my end thus far today as well.
  12. Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that Harvard musicology posting was potentially fake. I guess we'll see tomorrow (hopefully).
  13. Congrats ethnogirl on your acceptance to the ever-competitive Berkeley. It seems like it's not in my cards to be going there (granted I haven't been formally rejected as of yet), so I'm definitely jealous. haha If I may ask what your research interests are? Well now my pins and needles are somewhat softened for the meantime knowing that ethno is taking a while overall. Granted I'm sure this feeling will be only short-lived. haha
  14. Congrats to SNES on his two positive hear-backs, and to Karajan for his acceptance into Stanford! Though I must say that I'm rather nervous about Chicago now. Traditionally, ethnomusicologists have been contacted early February whereas others have been contacted late January. I suppose I still have time, but it may be bleak. We'll see. At least now I can get my mind off of things temporarily with a transcription exercise British Columbia is sending tomorrow for it's ethno applicants. I'm not sure what to expect, but I'm assuming it'll be a Balinese gamelan transcription, which is arguably some of the most difficult music I've come across for transcription purposes. Fun fun.
  15. Not I. Though I suppose it's comforting that music acceptances are starting to trickle out. Slowly, but surely.
  16. Hi rebel rebel! It's always good to meet another prospective ethnomusicologist, so good luck on your apps? If you don't mind me asking, where else are you applying? I would think Cornell would be a good choice for your rather interdisciplinary interests, as it's a musicology program with a large ethnomusicology influence, but I do know they're searching for a new ethnomusicologist as one is retiring, so it'll be interesting to see who winds up there (I need to check into this). Plus the PhD is completely customizable, in a sense, so you can make sure that all of your bases are covered. Good luck!
  17. The timing was indeed timely considering the conversation. Luckily that wasn't me. I'm actually not sure if there is any correlation between when the letters of ethnomusicology and musicology from UCLA are sent out as they are separate departments. I'll keep on waiting.
  18. Aye. I completely misinterpreted "hard admit." I read it as if @fall2012musiccomp had a grudge against UCLA, so it was a hard admit to say something positive about it. Completely my bad. haha But I do agree that it is incredibly difficult to be admitted into, as the NRC rankings have stated. I guess we'll all see what happens.
  19. A hard admit? I sense either some kind of animosity towards the place. haha But I do agree, UCLA is among the best, if not the best, for socio-musicology. I'd be more than honored if my application was considered by them.
  20. haha. I didn't really notice the eclectic regionality of my school list. Honestly I wasn't bound by location; these just happen to be the schools where I feel my research interests would fit best. I'm sure each location would surely be exciting to live in. I guess I'll see! As for my area of focus, I do my research primarily on East Asian popular music. Specifically, I'm more interested in the social side of music rather than the actual music itself (for we can all agree that modern pop music isn't necessarily the most interesting thing in the world musicality-wise). So I focus my research around social theory, postmodernism, globalization, class division, gender studies, identity, and film studies. So what composition techniques or styles do you specialize in?
  21. I've been lurking this forum from behind the scenes for quite some time and anxiousness eventually got the better of me. So I created an account to vent like you guys have. Plus, I feel there's a need for a potential ethnomusicologist amongst the Theory, Musicology, and Composition regular-posters. Just because you guys probably want to know, I applied at: Harvard, UPenn, Chicago, UW-Madison, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, Toronto, and British Columbia. The next three weeks are going to be heck, as this is the period I'll hear from all of these schools. So it's good to join people sharing my anxious feelings. haha
