  1. Just FYI re Kasson at UNC - from what I've heard he's no longer accepting new students (he's cutting back before retirement.) You should definitely contact him yourself to make sure, but since I heard that I thought it worth letting you know sooner rather than later.
  2. I'll be there in the fall! (History PhD) Very excited!
  3. I agree too. Anything posted here shouldn't be the end all, be all for any prospective student, but a general list of "hey, i found that this school has good people for x field" could be great. I'd leave out the rankings, because honestly I wouldn't even know how to determine them that well, but no harm listing ones I liked. Everyone has to do their own research to figure out what would work for them, but these forums are about sharing information, so why not? I just applied for late 19th/early 20th century American women's history with a focus on popular culture. I found that UNC-Chapel Hill, Wisconsin-Madison, UChicago, Harvard (AmCiv) and Michigan had good departments given my interests, along with a few others with less depth in the sub-field. Of course, there are certainly other good schools that I didn't look at for various reasons (location, retiring/leaving professors, etc.) but if you want to do something similar, check out those schools!
  4. Hey guys - completely unrelated, but I had to miss UChicago's History Day this past weekend for my brother's wedding (pesky family) so I thought I'd drop a line here to see if anyone who did attend could PM me any highlights/lowlights/surprising bits of information gleaned from the activities. I'm visiting on my own in a couple weeks, but any info would be much appreciated!!
  5. I'm the UNC admit (sorry about the delay - the site wouldn't let me sign in). Just got an email from the DGS about half an hour ago, sent through the grad secretary, with my POIs copied. Visiting weekend is March 23-24. Very excited!!!
  6. Congrats to the Yale acceptances!! I went there for undergrad (and majored in history - shocker!) so I'm happy to answer any questions about New Haven, campus life, etc. Obviously don't know a ton about the grad program though.
  7. I haven't posted yet on the results survey, but I was admitted to Chicago today. (yayy!!!!) Email from POI informed me, don't know about the others. Five years funded but no further details. It's pretty much my first choice so I'm really stoked. Haven't heard from anywhere else yet, but obviously happy with what I have. If it helps to know, I'm an Americanist focusing on the early-twentieth century and cultural and gender history. Also, congrats and condolences all around. It's an absolutely insane admissions process, I wish the best for everyone.
  8. I read it last month! Really enjoyed it. I think anyone particularly interested in history will a lot out of it. It's just a fun read, but Stephen King is an amazing writer (even if some people don't want to give him credit for it because of his subject matter) and he captures the quotidian better than anyone. Saw the Erik Larson nod above - anyone who likes him should also check out his latest (but like a year old, I think) In the Garden of Beasts. Amazing look at the rise of the Nazis from the perspective of the American ambassador to Germany in '33-34. Plus it has sex and spies, what more could you want? And, as other history nerds will appreciate, Larson's end notes were hilarious. Right now I'm catching up on reading from last year and halfway through Freedom. Pretty engaging, just depressing. But it's better than thinking about my applications!
