In terms of public transit, outside of the downtown/UWM/Eastside/Marquette area, it is pretty dismal. I guess from Bay View the 15 is fairly reliable as buses go. Also, living anywhere near a 30 route line will get you to UWM. I think UWM also has a shuttle system, so if you do not live within walking distance of UWM, you could shuttle it to campus. Many students live in Riverwest (fairly cheap, good restaurants and some good bars, with a thriving artistic/intellectual community), but there is higher crime. In terms of near UWM, I would look for apartments/housing on the Lower Eastside, south of Brady Street. Bay View also has some great duplexes/houses for rent too. You could look into Shorewood (just north of campus), but apartments there will probably be more expensive. For instance, I paid $275 a month to live in a duplex with 3 other guys but that was near MU. I never had issues with crime or felt unsafe.

As for nightlife, North Ave. near UWM has many bars, restaurants, and the Oriental movie theater. Brady Street is not too far from campus and has plenty of bars and restaurants as well as does Bay View. Water St. is more frat bro/slutty people/crazy if that is your scene.

Living on the lower eastside or Bay View will keep you in close proximity to the lake and many of the green spaces that make Milwaukee a great place to live.

I would also suggest looking on Craigslist for apartments/roommates. I have had success doing this in Austin, but UT is massive, so it is fairly easy to find fellow grad students.

A local filmmaker made this awesome video about Milwaukee that gives you an idea about how great the city is and many of the scenes in the film are near/close to UWM or areas that I stated you should live above

I am originally from Milwaukee. UWM is in a great location and you can definitely find apartments near campus for cheap. Otherwise, I know a few people who lived near Marquette (because rent is very cheap, but it is a less desirable area) and then took the bus to campus. Bay View is the up-and-coming neighborhood with restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and shops. I would say you should have no trouble finding rent between $400-600 if you are looking the right places. Milwaukee sucks in the winter...it is miserably cold and there is always wind off the lake. I know they were still getting snow up until this week. Overall, the nightlife is great--relaxed scene with plenty of bars. Hopefully, you love beer. In my opinion, they also have one of the best local coffee chains, Alterra. I now live in Austin TX and have not found anything I love as much as Alterra. There are many green spaces in the city for hiking, relaxing, and exercising as well. I attended Marquette, so I know less about UWM in terms of school information.
  3. Congrats UT acceptances as well. Feel free to PM me too.
  4. I did not think to consider this until I got an offer from a school--fellowships. One of my choices offered me a 1st and 5th year fellowship, in which I would not have to TA, instead focusing just on my coursework or writing my dissertation. Ultimately, it will not make or break my decision. But, if two schools are equal in all other respects, it could sway me
  5. I would agree with UT-Austin, and I would also argue UCSB is very strong. It appears that everyone (even the quant. people) utilize some form of qualitative methods.

    USC

Hi everyone, Does anyone have information on USC. Have acceptance gone out? Are they still figuring out funding?
  7. I got an invite as well. It seems to me such sort notice to find a flight for just an interview.
  8. I got invited to the open house at UC-Boulder
  9. I plan on working at a running store, and I am also coaching high school track, which should be an interesting experience...(along with spending as much time as possible with family as well).
  10. Rejected from Madison, which I expected, since there were no professors doing anything similar to what I want to pursue. Congrats to all who have gotten accepted.
  11. The visit day is March 9th-10th. It seems you receive 2 emails from the schools. One from the sociology department saying that they have recommended you for admission, and then another from the graduate school which is when you are officially admitted (happened for both Texas and UCSB).
  12. I received an email with an official acceptance letter from UCSB today. I was the one who reported the phone call. Offered 5 years of funding.
  13. UT-Austin will cover up to $200 in travel expenses, not sure on any of the other ones.
  14. The best advice I received from a prof, who has been on admissions committees at 2 top 5 programs was to find "a cluster" of people whom you want to work with. She told me she always looked to match people's interests with a group of professors. Additionally, I discussed how the cities and areas surrounding the school could be utilized to benefit my research/advancement of sociology. She said banking on one professor is risky, especially if that prof is not tenure track--lots of movement within academia. The school wants you to want to go to that school because the program is a great fit, not just for a professor. Also, emphasizing some aspect about you that differs you from others is always a good idea too.
  15. Has anyone else who applied to Texas been accepted?
