  1. Hi everyone!

I'll go to Columbia this fall and yet haven't secured any housing. I have an option to live in Queens (if I don't get the campus housing one). Anyone has the experience commuting from Queens to Columbia? How long does it take by train? I'd love to hear any advice.

    Thanks.

  2. Hi Setiadi,

Normally, a letter like this needs to be submitted by international students when they apply for admission. In your case, however, it seems like you are required to submit it after having been granted admission and funding. In my experience, you just need to show the ISSO that your scholarship is enough to cover the tuition, fees and living expenses for the first year of your studies and that it is renewable depending on satisfactory progress toward your degree. If your scholarship does not cover everything, then you must have bank statements which prove that you are able to pay for the rest. You may want to send them a copy of your scholarship award. For me, my Department send mine directly to the ISSO.

I sent the ISSO a copy of my scholarship letter, as alleykat suggests.

Yes, I will send the copy of my award as well. Thanks alleykat and Ennue. :)

  3. Dear fellow,

I am in process of applying my I-20. One of supporting documentations I have to submit to the International Students and Scholars Office is: "A signed and dated letter from you describing how you will pay for your tuition, fees and living expenses for the first year of your studies and how you plan to pay for the following year(s)". However, I have received a scholarship that will cover my tuition fees and living expenses. What should I write on the letter? Any experience?

In addition, the ISSO also requires "Documents that show that you have enough funds available now for your tuition, fees and living expenses for the first year of your studies. Bank statements must show the name of the account holder." Do I have to submit this document as well since all my tuition will be covered through a scholarship?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

  4. Thanks! How many of you are already in NY? I'm planning to move there for the summer. Still in California right now though.

I thinks there are several students are in NY now. You can contact them both through the MPA-DP and SIPA 2014 Facebook Groups.

Even I'll be in NY in the Fall. :)

  5. I've learned a lot just going through the process...but I also realized that many applicants had exposure to international relations in some way or another....and basically focused on that in their SOP....I have 0% exposure, and not only graduated with Business degree, but work for major fortune 500 company as analyst...so business, business, business, and they probably saw it as a career change thing, and I didn't present it well.....

    But fleetly Thanks!

It honestly all comes to how you tell your story and how your business degree / current career fits into your overall goal and commitment to IR and public services.

I got accepted with a MSc in business and 3 years exp in investment banking, so trust me, your background is just fine, you just need to think the rest of your app.

    Hi beekline,

I agree with Nexpresso. I think your background is okay, but you might need to elaborate your application comprehensively: the SOP, LoR, CV, etc.

    Good luck for you.

  6. I just called the admission office, and they said that I don't have to enroll on the Summer Language Program (fiuuh) .. Strange, since my toefl is 109 and i got 23 on the speaking part.

I also asked the admission officer to connect me with current student, she said that she will forward me to one and he/she will be in touch with me. I told her that I need to make decision soon, since if I have to let go SIPA and go to SAIS I have to enroll on the pre-term program.

Let me see, whether a current SIPA student will sell SIPA the way bunch of SAIS students emailed me and selling SAIS.

Regarding your iBT score, I think the admission officer also consider your internationally exposure experience (training in WTO and the fact that your are working in MoFA).

Btw, have you discussed with Gerri, a MoFA's civil servant currently enrolling in MIA? She might give you more insight on what the program is and even better the relation with MoFA's works.

  7. Hi Guys! I was rejected from MPA DP program a week ago, and still can't stop checking this blog! I guess I will be going through the application process again late this year, so trying to figure things out what can I do until then to make sure I get accepted!

GPA 3.7, studied Business Admin with concentration in Finance

Went to community college first (3.5 GPA) then transfered ---- do universities (like Columbia) look at that as a weakness?....

GRE - retaking in a few month, i did poorly on verbal part (English is my second language)

Working as analyst for asset management company (5yrs), intl division, doing research, data analysis, corporation actions etc....

I don't have any real volunteer work, I do try to do little stuff now and then, but having a full time job and a baby is tough to dedicate time...

I don't have any real travel experience like many strong applicants, once again Im either working or taking care of my daughter

So with said, I would apperiate any suggestions!!! Thank you, and good luck to all of you guys that are still waiting!

    Hi beekline,

I am international student with poor GRE verbal too :D

On my SOP, I wrote my rural development internship during undergraduate and I elaborate it with my current working experience. IMHO, MPA DP more into practical learning (internship projects here and there), thus, the admission officer might consider practical experience as well. CMIIW.

I don't know whether you once have hands on experience during your college time or doing field monitoring for your research. If you have any, I think you should try to write them on your SOP.

    Good luck for you :)

  8. Erry, I think even though your speaking is below 25, but since you are working in English circumstances, you are considered fluent in English. So, you should feel glad then.

Is there any SIPA admitted in this thread required to enroll the summer course?

  9. Congrats on ur acceptance....I actually heard of people requiring to take english courses before the semester starts, and few had to carry on with additional english classes in their first year of study...

quick question to the international students that got accepted into MPA-DP, would you mind sharing your work experience, im just trying to gauge, what time of exprience these type of schools are looking for....thanks!

    Hi Beekline,

I work as civil servant since 2009. Graduated from a university in Indonesia with a Rural Development Internship, where I was placed in a post-earthquake area. I elaborated these experience on my Personal Statement. Hope it give you another point of view.

    Good luck for you.

  10. Selamat ya Setiadi..

Anyway where did you find about the summer English Course requirement? Is it on the decision letter? because I cannot find anything about it on my letter.. this will be a very good deal maker for SIPA for me, since SAIS requires me not only language course but also econ course.

    Terima kasih.

Yes, it is stated on the decision letter. You might not need to enroll because your iBT score has met their requirement.

Mine is less than 110, while I read on the admission page, the requirement was only 100. But I am going to enjoy the program anyway :)

  11. Just got into MPA-DP!!! So excited! No funding though...I will definitely need to look for other funding sources (I'm an international student)

    Hi wanderingwonderer,

    Salam kenal.

God willing, I'm going to MPA DP as well. Glad to hear that there will be an Indonesian (even though you are living abroad) in the program.

Btw, are you asked to enroll in the summer English program?

  12. any DP people found out? i don't see anything on "view your admission decision"...... :(

I haven't seen either. The MPA-DP deadline was 15 days after the MPA/MIA, we might still have to wait few days ahead. *keep fingers crossed*

  13. Congrats!

I think it would be better for you to make a priority list on your consideration: the program, faculty, internship opportuniy, or school's brand? Then, you can rank those universities and pick the best one. If I were you, I might take ESP since this program seems specific enough on the environmental issues and you might have chances to meet professors or professionals on environmental policy. Just a thought. :)

    Good luck.

  14. The Admissions Blog was updated yesterday:

    When will I know?

    March 1st, 2012 by gh2122

As of this morning… 39% of the applications submitted have been reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Admission decisions for our 2-year full time MIA and MPA programs will begin to roll out on March 14th.

Is MPA in Development Practice also included?

    Thank you
