  1. Dear English/Lit folks: please allow a humble outsider (with an MA in Spanish and French lit) to opine with regards to Joyce. I love Joyce!!! I've read and done comparative work with all three novels (though one never really "reads" FW, rather s/he must be reading it over and over). As for the idea that he intended it to be difficult, I disagree (as does much of the scholarship). First of all, we all know authorial intention is of little to no import and the author has been dead for years. Second, if he had any intention at all, it was to create a work which would allow for an infinitude of interpretations (v. Eco). If this was his intention, he accomplished it masterfully.

  2. Txelizabeth- I, too, was rejected from UMich. It's my fourth rejection, but somehow this one has hurt the most. I'm holding out for three more programs. My prospects aren't looking too good. It may be the case that I become a second-year applicant. The problem, however, is that I'm not sure if I can do another year of this process. It's too expensive, and I'm not sure if I'll be better off next year.

I think--no, I know--if I can get into any program, Master's or Doctorate, I'll be able to prove myself and have more linguistics courses under my belt to demonstrate my abilities. Unfortunately, I attended a small liberal arts university for my undergraduate degree, and there was no linguistics department. It doesn't seem to matter that I took every course offered in linguistics (general and hispanic) during my tenure. I'm guessing it is enough in this year's applicant pool. At this juncture, I feel I should have gone with my initial instinct of applying for Master's programs, but all of my professors strongly encouraged (and even required) my applying to PhD programs. Sigh.

My congratulations go out to all of you. Do you have any suggestions for me in the event that I find myself in the undesirable position of not attending graduate school in the fall?

I send many good vibes to those of you in my position... with the slightly stronger hope that I get an acceptance, too. :)

I'm in a similar situation. My M.A. is in Spanish and French, but not linguistics. However, instead of applying to just Linguistics Departments, I applied to programs in Hispanic linguistics which are usually housed in Departments of Spanish and Portuguese. For you Francophones out there, some schools also treat French linguistics similarly. So far I've been accepted to 3 out of 7 schools. I also took whatever linguistics courses I could and I think it helped. I figured my chances were pretty slim getting into a Ph.D. program in Linguistics, which is why I took the approach I did. Also, this is my second year of the application process.

    Best of luck all!

  3. "That, and having discussions with every friend that has a baby (wow, your baby is HOW OLD and is already producing interdentals?), "

Love the baby with the interdentals! I would say my nerdiest linguistics moment was in an Elementary Spanish course when I attempted to teach students stem-changing verbs by illustrating the logic behind their historical development, as well as parallel developments in French. I'm pretty sure it went way over their heads, but I enjoyed myself!

  4. I saw the e-mail that my friend got following the phone call and they (hisp ling) will reimburse up to $250 for airfare. It's not a lot but it's certainly enough to cover most of the flight for a domestic student. Plus the airport is like 2 miles from downtown which is pretty nifty for such a large city. Hope that helps.

    It does. Thanks PhDreaming!

  5. I've often wondered about this myself. So far during my interviews, no one has asked me about the other schools I've been accepted at. However, I don't know if this is the case with everyone, but most of the schools to which I applied actually asked you to list other programs to which you've applied ON THE APPLICATION. So most of the committees do probably already know at least to where else we've applied and, maybe where we've been accepted.

  6. Hey, I'm reading the same. I'm half way through the first one. Probably should finish the first one and the second one before 2nd season comes out.

Cool. That's kind of my plan as well. I'm also halfway through the first book. So far it's pretty much been the same as the show. I wonder if HBO's doing one book per season? While I am enjoying the books, I will make one semi-pretentious literary observation: Martin's prose is nothing to brag about. He's better than some, but, of course, he's no Tolkien. And he definitely overuses the verb "to pad," as in "the wolf padded closer to Arya." I can see using it with animals from time to time, but he also uses it with humans! Tell me, how does one pad? I'll stop here because I've already gone overboard (Lit. majors will understand, I'm sure).

  7. I know this is lame, don't judge! I'm reading the Game of Thrones books by George R.R. Martin. It's nice being able to read something without having to over-analyze it, as I had to do during my Master's. So long narratology, deconstruction, Bakhtin, Lacan, intertext, etc.!

  8. GL - two of my friends have already been offered admission via telephone and will be at the Hisp Ling recruitment day on March 1st. My recruitment weekend for general LING is 2nd-3rd. Hope to see you around then!

So they call first? Now I have to be constantly checking my phone as well! Lol. I'm sure I'll know something soon, be it good or bad news, since this recruitment weekend is March 1. By the way PhDreaming, does OSU cover any expenses for the visit?

  9. If that question's directed to me, I have clarify that I've still not been accepted. I was given an interview just to verify my Spanish and all signs point to acceptance, but I have yet to receive notification from the department or the Graduate School. My status on MyUW still says "pending."

  10. I thought I posted this already, but it doesn't seem to have appeared. I had my interview with UW yesterday. It really was just an informal interview to verify that my Spanish was good enough for teaching. It sounds like I'm pretty much accepted, but I have yet to receive any further information. I might be able to verify what Chuck said about the funding though. The person I spoke to said that the stipend for my program (Spanish/Portuguese, not Sociology) was around $10,000! Either she was mistaken, or funding at UW really is "atrocious." I also don't have my heart set on Wisconsin, but it would be a great program for my research interests.

  11. Though I'm not in the field, I would say that excessive alcoholic consumption is a requisite not necessarily for people in English, but definitely for those in Creative Writing. All good writers have their vices, whether it be alcohol, opium, sexual perversion, etc. By the way, did any of you English peeps see Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris?" If not, I highly recommend it. It features cameos from a lot of famous dead writers!

  12. In case anyone else applied to UW-Madison and is wondering about the interview, I just had mine. As I said above, it was described as an "informal" phone interview; that's exactly what it was. The purpose of the interview was just to verify that my Spanish was good enough to be teach. We basically had a casual conversation for fifteen minutes or so. She asked me if I had any questions about the school or Madison. It sounded like she hadn't even seen my application, so she didn't even bring up methodologies or theory or anything. She also mentioned that I had basically been accepted; the interview was just a verification of my Spanish. I was kind of worried about it, so I'm glad it's over with.

  13. A friend of mine here in my department got accepted to OSU Hispanic LInguistics a couple weeks ago. He was invited to their recruitment week which will take place on March 1st. Hope your acceptance is on it's way.

Wow, thanks for the information! Frankly it sounds like bad news though. On the appstatus page is still says "in review." Now I'm kind of worried. I'm glad you told me though!

  14. Did anyone apply to OSU (Spanish and Portuguese Dept) for Hispanic and/or Romance Linguistics? I'm wondering if they make their decisions around the same time as the general Linguistics Dept. From what I've seen on the survey, notifications are generally sent around mid-February. Still, I'd like to know if anyone's heard anything. Congrats to those who've been accepted in the past few days!

  15. That was me. Holy crap. I thought my chances were slim. I think I'm dreaming... O_O... I thought the e-mail was spam lol

Congratulations busbus! Cornell is an excellent school! One of my Latin professors got his Ph.D. in Linguistics from there back in the day!
