  1. Hi, I am thinking of applying for the Anita Borg Scholarship next year (2010-11). If anyone has applied and/or won and can post any tips/suggestions here, I'd be grateful. I realize that's too broad a question, but I guess basically I would like to know what they are looking for in their applicants, apart from a 3.5+ GPA. Also, since the deadline for this year is past, they haven't put up the application process on their website. Can someone please tell me what goes into the application packet? I'm guessing there's an online application form. Usual academic history + References + an essay (what was the essay question this year?)...anything else? Thanks in advance! PS - I know it's way too early to be applying but I'm currently on a break till I start grad school this fall so I'm trying to keep myself busy.
  2. Out of curiosity..is this a route a lot of people take? Master's in engineering, work for a few years to pay off student loans+importantly get work experience, and then do an MBA?
  3. Is there a facebook group for incoming grad students? And/or for EE peeps?
  4. Ah lucky you! That was my first choice and I didn't get it  Relax, you don't need to 'press a button'. Your assignment is confirmed until you write to them canceling it.
  5. Oh yeah sure I did that..Thanks for the tip anyway.
  6. @socialpsych: Ah finally some good news. Thanks.
  7. EV 3BR/Triple occupancy. Not exactly what I wanted  There's an option to join a waitlist if you're not satisfied with your assignment - you can try for a better option during the second lottery while retaining the current assignment. I'm gonna apply for it anyway; just wanted to know if you guys think its effective? I mean has anyone ever gotten a better assignment through the 2nd lottery? Like I said I'm applying anyway, but just curious...
  8. @ Locrytham (sorry if I got that wrong) You should also try the Community Housing service offered by Stanford..If you don't already know, the link is somewhere on their Housing and Dining site. A few seniors of mine have told me that it's actually a pretty good resource for off-campus housing

I read above somewhere that Lyman is engineeringy...So I'd like to know where most grads in engineering live? (Not that I mean to be cliquey or anything :| ) Please post here. Also, isn't off-campus housing supposed to be cheaper? I dunno, haven't thought about housing yet. But most grads choose on-campus housing, as far as I can see. Why is that?
  10. Moi too! At least, I'm thinking about it...MS in EE
  11. The docs go to the OIE, not the departments right, and because of (I quote my ECE grad counselor) 'the huge volume of documents to be processed, the OIE will not be able to individually acknowledge new admits'. So basically, you have to wait it out. However, if the OIE finds your docs to be wanting in any respect, they will let you know, so no worries. If they don't ask you for anything extra then your application packet is good. Also, the OIE will inform you when they send out your I20. If you still want confirmation, email your grad admissions counselor (your dept), that's what I did. They'll probably tell you the same thing.
  12. @nitzenator: Oops typo I meant $36k per year. I20 amount should be $60k. ($18k..how I wish. _
  13. @nitzenator: Mine is a 1.5 year course..Tuition fees for 1st year = $18k. Haven't started applying for a loan yet
  14. @nitzenator: $60 grand I guess it's the same range for all depts? And how am I managing? Part family funds, part loan. You?
  15. Too bad indeed...But I guess we don't have to be completely disheartened. I talked to a few seniors in my dept currently in CMU and they said it's quite easy to get a campus job (assistantships mostly) @ $10-15 per hour..and working @ 10 hrs/week gives them enough money to meet their living expenses. That's the silver lining if you're looking for one..And yeah I'm just happy to have gotten an admit, just sent out my docs this week. Now the wait for I20 :|
