  1. Figured I'd ask you guys since you all know more than me probably!

If you go for an MA to the school you really wanted to get your PhD at, when it comes time, are there any chances at all of getting in for the PhD? Like do certain universities prefer not to take students who did their terminal MAs at their university?

Is it better to go somewhere else for the MA and then hope to get into the dream school for the PhD?

Sorry ahead of time if it sounds like a silly question! Just trying to work out a game-plan....

  2. Just checked Wisconsin and it says: "Your program has recommended you for admission. The graduate school will be reviewing your file. Please refer to this page for updates." this is my third cycle applying to graduate programs and after 9 rejections over the last 2 years I now have a tentative acceptance at one of my top choices! Even if it doesn't come with funding just making it this far has me ecstatic. Best of luck to everyone and check that page!

I checked and still nothing. Does that mean I was probably rejected?

  3. That's a wonderful outlook Safferz. Having the strongest possible application is truly only half the battle, and I'm proud of the fact that I even put together an app that I would consider submitting to Yale.

Plus they could totally still call me or put me on a wait list, or offer me a funded MA, or even an unfunded MA............

Was rejected from Northwestern too. Like I said earlier, it was really flooded this year so a huge congrats to those who made it!! Kind of glad though I'm not going there. I'm not too fond of their new dean, Dwight. He's rather fond of making cuts so this may be the start of a trend for that school :/

  4. I really can't express to you how happy I am to see you post this.

I was also accepted to Miami and offered an awesome funding package and I am personally pretty excited about using the next couple of years to improve my writing and languages- not to mention I really admire 2 scholars I will have a chance to take courses with.

So is that where you have decided to go? You didn't hear from anywhere else? I still am stinging from my "subtle" rejection...

  5. Awww, Kelkel. But you do have an acceptance for Miami, with funding, no? That's an accomplishment! Don't be discouraged. I'm sure you're a competitive applicant, or else you wouldn't have been awarded that. I know, it's easier said than done. But really, you must be doing something right.

This is true. Kelkel, you are obviously awesome if you just got a funded offer to Miami.

Don't throw the towel in quite yet. You may be one of the lucky ones for NU, but it is true about the cut on spots and the rise in applicants.

  6. As things are clearly heating up heading into next week, I offer sincere congrats to those who have been blessed with good news, sincere sympathies to those beset with bad news, and sincere hope for all of us on the remainder of our apps...

If I am right, no one on this board is out of the game yet, right??

And for those who have agonized at the silence and hope-and-despair of hearing nothing, join me as we sing with John,Paul, George and Ringo:

    "Still my inbox gently sleeps."

Perhaps, we can all take comfort in the fact that none on this board will ever script the e-mail I just received from one of my students who felt compelled to advise me: "regarding the paper we have to due, I have know idea what to write about..."

Haha I love the Beatles reference. So I'm taking you as well heard nothing today from the great UW-M?

And in other news (and in a similar fashion as to what happened with you), I found out NU is a no-go for me. :( Big sad-face. Oh well. They get like 600 applicants so it was a really long shot, and it wasn't my first choice anywhoooo.

I should probably go watch something ridiculous now. Laughing is good for the soul.

  7. If that question's directed to me, I have clarify that I've still not been accepted. I was given an interview just to verify my Spanish and all signs point to acceptance, but I have yet to receive notification from the department or the Graduate School. My status on MyUW still says "pending."

Thanks for getting back to me! It's definitely my top choice, and I'm always unsure with this technological business...history doesn't do interviews. All I know is that they met and decided last week. Guess that means they'll start around now putting it in the system?

  8. Hey, so I'm not applying to sociology at Wisconsin, but I'm applying to history. Out of curiosity, on the MyUW webportal, did it ever change to anything else besides "pending" before you notified of whether you were accepted or not?

It seems no one who applied to history has heard yet, and just wondering if it's not boding well if I'm still seeing "pending" and that it's being reviewed by my committee, even though they apparently made decisions last Thursday and Friday....

    I'd love any insight.

  9. I was referring to another poster on the forum who mentioned that UW-M would be posting decisions today. That is all.

Maybe they were just trying to appease everyone? Or maybe they're only posted the admitted or whatever. Scared.

  10. Actually, Wisconsin really trying to cut things down. They absolutely screwed up their 2010 cohort. Last year they cut back quite a bit so that most people actually got decently funded. 60-70 is a lot but that's about a quarter of the total application pool.

This year, I've heard that they're taking only about 20. Not sure if he meant only Americanists or in general. They're working towards truly offering fully-funded packages. My guess is that it's the latter- they want to offer about 20 fully funded packages. So out of 450 applications (as it says on the site), about So... the top 5% would be very lucky. Very lucky.

When I talked to them, they said they were admitting the same cohort amount as last year, which if you read carefully through the minutes in the past year amounted to about 73 (though they officially printed 61 as they amount they admitted). So I think the 20 refers to the Americanists.

  11. Ok my fellow would-be UW Badgers- as of 10:54 am, the My UW portal still shows 'pending' for the apps...

A couple of reasons for optimist for UW results for all of us-

    1. No one has gotten the heads up emails, so we are still in the running in equal footing, and

    2. They traditionally take a very large cohort- 50 to 60 students accepted per year the last several years...

    I am...Hopin'-n-Prayin'...for all us...

Agreed. Hopin' and prayin'....They actually technically take 60 to 70! Look at the minutes from 2010 and 2011, it'll say how many students were offered admission

  12. oseirus is funny. all i'm doing is giving the advice i wish someone had given me (or that i had asked for) when i was applying. oh, and procrastinating on my comps work. but NE Nat is right. just wait before grabbing the phone. you guys, it's february 2. yes, lots of people are getting news already (and congratulations to those with good news!), but there's 1-2 months left of this. try to resist picking up the phone, otherwise you'll be that person that texts someone 20 times after a date and never hears back.

Haha thanks for keeping us in line

  13. No. Several current students said it's bad form. Tempting, no? :(

It's really tempting. I already found out from an insider something I didn't want to know....i.e., found out I was rejected from one of the Ivies I applied too...oh well. Missed the cut off by one. Can you effing believe that? Oh well.

  14. I think this is what most departments say, regardless of when they in fact release decisions. That page was last modified on November 23, so it isn't a reflection of how the application review process is going at UCLA. I would guess it's just a general "by mid-March we'll have most decisions sent out, but acceptances will probably be out sooner" type of thing.

Oh, I didn't notice that! Makes sense. I'm really tempted to just email my POI and ask....do you guys think that'd be appropriate? Or would it look bad?

  15. I wonder if this means Berkeley's decisions will be released comparably late?

Also wondering the same. It makes me think that the departments may have received more applications than they had anticipated, or that the applicant pool is really strong and it's more difficult to choose. The recent financial cuts can also be another factor? Hmmm. I was really hoping to hear in the next week or so.
