  1. Perhaps I am missing something, but it does not seem like you were misled here. I see that the professor said he was nominating you for a fellowship but it doesn't look like you were selected. I was nominated for a fellowship as well and unfortunately did not get selected. I got my financial offers in writing from my programs. I hate this is happening to you but it sounds like miscommunication more than deception.

  2. I am moving from CA to FL. I am going to sell everything in my apt, furniture and all and ship my books and clothes via FedEx to FL. I am shipping my car via a car shipping company and flying over with my cat. I would have driven but I don't think my cat would be able to handle several days in the car. This was the best option for me economically.

  3. I am soooo glad I found this thread! I am dying from lack of motivation at work. I really have to get my butt back in gear before my supervisor starts noticing. I am so excited to start my program in the fall. My plan is to make June 7 my last day at work. I figure that will give me about 3 weeks to pack and clean out my current apt. I am trying my damnest to come up with ways to motivate myself lately. I like my job but recent management changes make me happy that I am leaving soon. I am debating on giving notice until 2 weeks before. I know that is the industry standard and I would love to give them more advanced notice but I am afraid it will back fire on me.

How much time are you all giving your employers?

  5. So as I have started my apartment search and some of my future classmates have mentioned getting roommates. I am 30 years old and I have lived alone for the last 3 years so I didn't even consider a roommate but I do realize that my income is about to take an 80% cut. So I am wondering, do most grad students get roommates? Does it make a difference getting a roommate after having lived alone? Any suggesions? I am on the fence here! Thanks!

  6. Chapel Hill is a true college town. With that being said, the closer you move to campus, the closer you are to the parties, noise and other nuances that come with the proximity. Especially if you are close to Franklin Street. Having spent sometime in Chapel Hill I can tell you that while that was great as an undergrad, as a grad student it's going to annoy you in no time. I think you should move a little further away. There are alot of great apt complexes that are further away from campus but less than a 30 minute bus ride. Try talking to some current grad students who can point you the right direction. Good luck!

  7. I would only apply if these are schools you really want to go to. I wouldn't want to apply to schools simply because they have late/rolling deadlines. If they aren't, I would just wait a year. It's really not that long considering it will be time to start applying for schools again in October/November.

  8. Can you contact someone in the department to discuss the oversight? It seems like an easy fix. Or send them that information from the website. It's in a PDF so it's easy to email.

And for what it is worth, and please correct me if I am mistaken, it looks like the application fee is $30. I am sure someone can spot you $30. I'd pay it just to be rid of the headache.

  9. One question: If you want to do a PhD in Psychology, why not do your masters in psychology?

Both programs look pretty even across the board. I think what you should do is look at both and see what each program is offering in way of classes, funding and fit. Do you have a point person at either school that you can talk to? Does each program allow you to be licensed in their respective state? Not all counseling programs allow you to become licensed without additional classes beyond graduation.

    Hope that helps!

  10. I don't really get stuck on big name schools. So with that being said, I would go for the one that offers funding. Will the Harvard education pay in the long run for the X dollar amount of loans you would have to take out as opposed to going to GW? If it will, then Harvard it is! If not, you might want to give GW another glance.

Good luck in what ever you choose!

  11. Sounds like you have already made a decision.

I personally think that I would like the RA/TA mix because I would have the opportunity to do both positions. I am person who enjoys variety.

But if the the one that offers the year round TA is a better fit, then why not talk to them about some research opportunities you could do in combination with teaching? Can't hurt. :) That is, if that is what you are looking for.
