Hey women'shistorianO+,
It's great to hear from another UK applicant -- and thank you so much for contacting Rachel H.! You've got me feeling optimistic again.
I applied for an open award in Creative Writing. My affiliate organization is Kingston University, but I applied for a Fulbright as an independent researcher, with the intention of producing a researched, book-length manuscript of poems. Obviously, I knew that submitting an application for an open award was a very long shot (thus worsening already-bad odds), but, because I already have an MA in poetry and am finishing an MFA in poetry this semester (and because I graduated from college 10 years ago), it seemed a bit silly to me to apply for another degree program. I keep hoping that, because I was a creative applicant (and thus was required to submit a writing sample), the Fulbright committee felt that my work gave them a good idea of my potential as a Fulbrighter, and that they decided that no interview was necessary on that basis.
The unfortunate thing is that, as far as I could tell, the UK committee has only granted Fulbrights in creative writing to a.) Students who have been accepted to creative writing programs in the UK; and b.) Students who undertake serious analytical projects with creative focuses.
