  1. Plus the so called elite schools new leaf is referring to all focus on the same things, and l have zero interest in those things.

what things are you referring to? also, let's be totally clear: academia is most definitely a stratified field. but it's not so much the name of your phd institution that matters as it is the name of your advisor..

  2. I applied with just a bachelors and have been accepted to doctoral programs for bioanthro. That being said, I have gotten the impression that a MA is fairly common for cultural anthro students- at least, more cultural anthro students than bioanthro students seem to have gone for a MA before applying to doctoral programs.

give us some stats please. where did you apply? and where did you do your undergrad? thanks!

  3. I also decided to get my Master's before applying for a PhD program because my undergrad GPA wasn't too spectacular. As far as making us competitive, I feel like it depends on the school. It seems as if having a Master's isn't too big of an advantage since most competitive anthro programs only have PhD track. I'm thinking the positive for us is that it does show we can excel in graduate courses despite our poor ug transcripts!

Regardless of what some anthropology departments say online, I think (by far) most Ph.D. students that are accepted to top programs have Master's degrees (or more). As an example, one of the very few sociocultural students to get accepted to Stanford last year got her B.A. from Stanford, went to Harvard Law, graduated with a J.D., clerked for a federal judge at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, worked for a super-high-powered law firm in Chicago . . . and then decided to apply to the Ph.D. program in anthropology. As if someone just graduating from their undergraduate institution could possibly compete with that.

Yeah, I think it's becoming more and more common to grab a MA degree first, if only to be sure that you're confident in your research choice before you start the long haul = no one wants to get stuck with a project they don't enjoy! In my case, a MA was almost necessary to make the transition from my cultural heavy undergrad to bio anth. Competition is heavy out there, but don't feel badly. I remember very clearly what my MA advisor told me a few years back when I got rejected from PhDs the first time around = "don't worry; hardly anyone gets in the first time they apply. you just have to reapply because they love to see that you're dedicated" Unfortunately, there's not a lot of funding in the field, so it's becoming more important to demonstrate how serious you are about the discipline. On another note.....having a MA doesn't count for anything if you aren't finished with a final draft of the thesis by the time decisions come in!!

  4. Only applied to two schools, haven't heard from either one.

Every time I see an e-mail on my phone I freak the hell out. Gradcafe admission results webpage is refreshed every two seconds in fact, my boyfriend just laughed at me "Are you on gradcafe again!???." I've also started to psychologically counsel myself, "It's okay if you don't get accepted, another year of trying isn't so bad." But the thought of having to get a real job in the real world terrifies me.

I don't have any new hobbies, trying to keep productive with my master's thesis. But I feel as though I'm less productive waiting to hear back...

another bio kid. which schools are you applying to?

  5. I was told I may meet some NYU profs at a NYCEP function that is happening while I am there, so that would be good. I hope we are still considered for both! NYU is my top choice over CUNY due mostly to funding - I am Canadian (Western Canada) and many school have less funding for international student but not NYU. CUNY is a great program with great faculty so if they can muster up some reasonable funding than they are definitely tied with NYU for my top choice.

What about you? Is NYU your top choice?

Well, I'm a West Coast girl at heart, so I don't know if I can make it in big, bad NYC. That's mostly why I'm heading out to the weekend = to check it out. I already have a solid admit under my belt, so I'm not really fretting about the interview portion of it. Hmmm about the funding though. Not sure if it's different for international students, but as far as I know, both programs are fully funded. CUNY vs. NYU = what's the real difference? Just faculty, right? And maybe some name power?

  6. Also, any word for any bioanth ppl at NYU? The acceptances going up are worrisome...

I haven't heard anything about NYU....although I'm kind of just assuming that they talk to eachother and either joint interview on one weekend, or have a school place dibs on a candidate. Was NYU your 1st choice? Are you coming from the East or the West?

  7. @babybiobabe: I'd like to second what Anthroman said(!), and kindly ask you whether you were contacted by e-mail or phone. I've been having phone reception issues, and am also waiting to hear back from CUNY. Also, were you accepted and are being invited to a visit campus weekend, or is this for an interview? Thanks!

hey decaf - i got an email from my potential advisor. and it's definitely for an interview, but with the intention of convincing me to accept them should they accept me. there are 2 weekends scheduled upcoming at the month turnover. oh, and i think they are just starting to contact people, so good luck!

  8. As someone who has a very great love for Berkeley, look at the hiring history. You're better off at Stanford. Unless a 40 minute public transport ride to SF is what it takes to make you feel like: OMG I TOTALLY LIVED UP MY GRADUATE YEARS BY GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO AND SEEING OFF-BROADWAY SHOWS AND GOING TO NON SLUTTY INTERESTING LOUNGES AND SEEING ART AND THE MOMA AND ALSO NOT HAVING ANY FUNDING BUT IM A BOSS AND I LOVE MYSELF, and that makes you happy, then go for it. Michigan is still a top department in our discipline; do you think people go to Ann Arbor to have fun? They to go to train to be anthropologists. If location/distractions matter that much for you that you can't sacrifice that much for the discipline now, what makes you think that you'll take the only job offer you get as an untenured professor at Boise State after a phd in anthro? Yes it fucking sucks ass, but that's the harsh shitty reality of higher education now. Either take it, or continue to use it as a placebo against schools you weren't competitive at. Your choice, academe couldn't care less.

sure sure. hiring. i'm applying to berkeley bio anth, so stanford really has no competition in that field. then again, what's the point of living somewhere miserable for 5-9 years just in the hopes that your program still has the best hiring rates when you get out? caffeinated indeed: have you spent much time in palo alto, because that is the definition of misery. also, most berkeley students i know just live in the city and take the 35-40 minute ride into berkeley when they have classes = idyllic. better than driving the hour north just go to a decent bar on the weekend because everyone you know is either wearing a suit or wants to pound their head against the wall. just opinions though.

  9. I think that's cheaper than Berkeley. One bedroom apt is upwards of 1600.

I got the info from a friend who got the email...The dept is notorious for not responding to inquiry. Nothing is ever official unless you get an email in your inbox that tells you it is, from Stanford or otherwise. But if you haven't heard from Stanford now, there is a 90% chance you should let the flame die.

hey friends, just a heads up: palo alto and berkeley are pretty much the exact same price. except at berkeley you have the option of living in/visiting SF on a regular basis. palo alto is just far enough away that you are sort of stuck in suit and tie corporate land most of the time. i haven't met many people who enjoyed spending their grad years in shallow alto, so make sure and choose wisely.....

  10. Just to give people a heads up... a friend of mine in Physical Anthro has interviews next week at CUNY, Stony Brook, and NYU. Things are starting to get busy! :)

oh no! now i'm worried! i haven't heard anything from nyu or cuny. but i get the sense that as a west coaster i'm not as competitive...any truth to that you think?
