  1. hey congrats! i will probably be headed there myself, although to the bio program. we should meet up sometime! either on this side of the bay or that one!
  2. nice nice. which weekend did you interview? and which faculty member did you apply with? thanks!!!!
  3. what things are you referring to? also, let's be totally clear: academia is most definitely a stratified field. but it's not so much the name of your phd institution that matters as it is the name of your advisor..
  4. give us some stats please. where did you apply? and where did you do your undergrad? thanks!
  5. Yeah, I think it's becoming more and more common to grab a MA degree first, if only to be sure that you're confident in your research choice before you start the long haul = no one wants to get stuck with a project they don't enjoy! In my case, a MA was almost necessary to make the transition from my cultural heavy undergrad to bio anth. Competition is heavy out there, but don't feel badly. I remember very clearly what my MA advisor told me a few years back when I got rejected from PhDs the first time around = "don't worry; hardly anyone gets in the first time they apply. you just have to reapply because they love to see that you're dedicated" Unfortunately, there's not a lot of funding in the field, so it's becoming more important to demonstrate how serious you are about the discipline. On another note.....having a MA doesn't count for anything if you aren't finished with a final draft of the thesis by the time decisions come in!!
  6. CUNY, NYU admits = any news for the rest of us? Especially NYCEP folks? Thanks!!!!
  7. another bio kid. which schools are you applying to?
  8. Well, I'm a West Coast girl at heart, so I don't know if I can make it in big, bad NYC. That's mostly why I'm heading out to the weekend = to check it out. I already have a solid admit under my belt, so I'm not really fretting about the interview portion of it. Hmmm about the funding though. Not sure if it's different for international students, but as far as I know, both programs are fully funded. CUNY vs. NYU = what's the real difference? Just faculty, right? And maybe some name power?
  9. I haven't heard anything about NYU....although I'm kind of just assuming that they talk to eachother and either joint interview on one weekend, or have a school place dibs on a candidate. Was NYU your 1st choice? Are you coming from the East or the West?
  10. i am going for the early march weekend. they said congratulations, but they never said i was admitted, so i'm thinking this is a shortlist weekend....? what about you k-tray?
  11. oh princeton kids...welcome to the family! i did my undergrad there, and there's no way out of the orange bubble.....enjoy!!!!
  12. hey decaf - i got an email from my potential advisor. and it's definitely for an interview, but with the intention of convincing me to accept them should they accept me. there are 2 weekends scheduled upcoming at the month turnover. oh, and i think they are just starting to contact people, so good luck!
  13. i guess you're right jerzygrl! CUNY contacted me this weekend, and it looks like i'm headed out to NYC on an all-expenses paid weekend = it feels so good!
  14. sure sure. hiring. i'm applying to berkeley bio anth, so stanford really has no competition in that field. then again, what's the point of living somewhere miserable for 5-9 years just in the hopes that your program still has the best hiring rates when you get out? caffeinated indeed: have you spent much time in palo alto, because that is the definition of misery. also, most berkeley students i know just live in the city and take the 35-40 minute ride into berkeley when they have classes = idyllic. better than driving the hour north just go to a decent bar on the weekend because everyone you know is either wearing a suit or wants to pound their head against the wall. just opinions though.
  15. hey friends, just a heads up: palo alto and berkeley are pretty much the exact same price. except at berkeley you have the option of living in/visiting SF on a regular basis. palo alto is just far enough away that you are sort of stuck in suit and tie corporate land most of the time. i haven't met many people who enjoyed spending their grad years in shallow alto, so make sure and choose wisely.....
  16. oh no! now i'm worried! i haven't heard anything from nyu or cuny. but i get the sense that as a west coaster i'm not as competitive...any truth to that you think?
  17. Just got my first rejection in the mail....Stony Brook's IDPAS program = sadness. I'm already accepted to my #1 though, so I'm not too down about it. But the rejections are out, just in case people are wondering!
  18. But I applied Hominid Paleo btw. Not a lot of bio folks on this forum it seems...
  19. I had an interview with GW on January 30th. I heard I was part of a small pool. Haven't heard anything since. Good luck!
