  1. Congrats to Goldie and everyone else who is wrapping up and making final decisions!

Mine just got a little easier - funding rejection FINALLY came in the mail from Wisconsin (dated March 5). Still no word at all from UCSB and and NYU! It's driving me nuts!

  2. I received mine last Thursday, dated February 24th.

My first funding letter... I almost dropped it several times while reading it because I kept thinking "OH MY GOD. SOMEBODY WANTS TO PAY ME!!!"

Sounds like they sent out letters to people who were awarded funding first, and the rest of us are just getting the bad news this week.

  3. Has anyone else still not heard anything about funding from Wisconsin? I'm resting a little bit easier now that I have other options, but they are still totally my top choice and this wait is painfully long.

I've received no official word from the department or the school, but I have heard about the funding decision from my POI. So I think the decisions have all been made, and they're just dragging their feet to notify people. I think that at this point, it would be fine to contact the graduate school.

  4. And another one bites, another one bites, another one bites the dust: Rutgers

I think its clear at this point that I'm no Safferz or emerald54 or telemaque or...you get the message...

come on UW-M funding!!! I understand these letters have been mailed...

Yep, just got my Rutgers rejection as well. My POI at Wisconsin sent me a very nice email yesterday telling me that although I was nominated for a fellowship, I didn't get one. Sounds like availability of the fellowships are way down this year, and competition is pretty stiff.

  5. oh make no mistake, getting a terminal MA sets you up VERY well for admissions at other schools, including "the top programs." a lot of schools prefer to accept applicants who already hold MAs because they have already proven themselves capable of doing graduate-level work. it's just that, from what i've seen, usually students have not been able to successfully move from terminal MAs to PhDs at the same institution. it's actually nice to know that not all programs make that part of their practice, but i know that NYU, chicago, and yale (usually) do.

I'm not certain about NYU or Yale, but of 43 Chicago social sciences MA's who applied for a Chicago PhD last year, 18 were accepted. Within history, it was 7 out of (I believe) 12.

  6. You're probably being considered for MAPSS (or MAPPHSSES whatever), since no one has posted on the board that they were offered it.

Yeah, I think straight rejections are coming first, then MAPSS. If anyone wants any info on MAPSS, PM me, because I went through the program last year and couldn't have been happier.

  7. Congrats to the Rutgers waitlistees. My situation seems somewhat odd, as rejections, acceptances, and waitlist decisions seem to have already gone out, but I haven't heard anything and the website says "No Decision." Guess its time to call.

  8. This is something that's said every year and tends to be exaggerated, although of course it can be true in particular instances. For example, the talk around here was that Northwestern had 600 apps for fewer spots than normal, when in actuality they had close to 300 just like always.

Yep, and I think inflated numbers can come from the department, as well. I find it difficult to believe Columbia's claim that they have over 600 applicants annually, when comparable schools (Chicago, Yale, Harvard) never claim more than 400. Maybe it's the New York factor, but I'm doubtful.

  10. I'd also recommend printing out your SOP and resume, reading through them, and highlighting the main points. I helps me during phone conversations when I'm asked something specific about my background and I can just glance down and find it more quickly...definitely makes it seem less stressful.

I would go a step further and suggest you have some talking points, CV, and SOP up on your screen along with the Skype interview. That way you can quickly reference them without looking away frequently.

  11. It was an official notice via email from one of the chairs of the small admissions committee who works in my sub-field with an email from my POI very quickly following it. I'm heading to campus now so if I hear anything more about when other applicants will be notified I will, of course, post it for you all.

    Congrats! Any word on funding?

  12. Looks like someone's being a douche... There's a bogus post on the results page for UChicago stating that the website has decisions up... Nope. They never do it that way, it's always via email or postal. Someone correct me of I'm wrong, but it looks like a bitter applicant wants to stir us all up. Ugh. False word is the last thing we all need right now.

I think you're spot on. There's not even a section on the UChicago website for admissions decisions.

  13. Hi everybody. Long time lurker, first time poster here. The anxiety is really starting to build, so I figured I would start posting at the risk of getting more addicted to this site/thread. Anyway, I was another Yale interviewee, and I haven't heard a thing from my POI since the interview. I think we can assume Yale will be a bit delayed because of the interview process, unfortunately.
