  1. Have you guys received the information required to create a NetID/EnterpriseID yet? I am actually still waiting for the official email acceptance from the Graduate College which my department tells me should be coming some time soon.
  2. I am moving everything myself from Arizona although I do not have much stuff to move. I am planning to pay a few extra bucks to carry an extra luggage of clothing with me and shipping my computer (large gaming computer) and small appliances via UPS. I found it was actually much cheaper to repurchase my furniture than to use a moving or shipping service.
  3. I am in the same situation albeit I am not an international student. I am traveling/working the entire summer and so do not have any time at all to visit. I am asking a friend to scope out the neighborhood for me and also getting some pictures from the staff at the places I am interested in. Nevertheless, it is still very risky to sign a lease without checking out the place yourself. I am planning to live about 2-3 miles from campus which is about a 15min bike commute. Do you guys think this is feasible during the winter?
  4. Hello everyone! I will be attending UIUC for MS in Industrial Engineering. If you haven't done so already, I would definitely contact the Tenant Union. Thanks to them, I've found some very great apartment deals which meets my preference. I won't be able to visit so am gathering as much information as I can. I am planning to move to C-U in the first or second week of August. Anyone going to the TA training starting on August 20th?
  5. As an undergrad in Math, I wanted to go to graduate school in Industrial Engineering. So, I opted to apply to MS programs in order to prepare for a PhD which is what I ultimately want. However, one of the school I applied for believe that I am more than qualify for their PhD program and accepted me into their PhD program. (I think because I've done research with a faculty at the school.) However, at the same time, I got into the MS program at my top-choice school. Key Points: - Funding: Both school offered full-funding and so money is not an issue. - Research: Both school have people working in my research interest. My research background fits better with the PhD school but I really want to move to a different research area which the MS school is stronger at. - Placement: The PhD school have good placement in industry but not to academia. The MS school have good placement into both industry and academia. - Lifestyle: I grew up in the area of the PhD school and my family is there so I will be closer to home. However, I really like the area of the MS school more and would enjoy a different experience. - Prestige: The PhD school has a top 15 program but its overall prestige is not that great. The MS school is a top 10 program but its prestige is very strong (think Duke/Berkeley/etc.) - Time: If I opt for the MS school then reapply for a PhD later, I would probably waste about 1 year when compared to going straight to a PhD. - Outreach: The PhD school say that I am their best applicant, going so far as to provide me my own individual office next to the professors. Two professors have personally reached out to me to collaborate with them in research. The MS school hasn't really reached out to me, As you can see, I can't really decide! My professors are split evenly between the two schools. Some want me to go straight to the PhD while some say I should get the MS and then reapply to a top 5 PhD program. I was hoping you guys can give me further insight into this dilemma!
  6. I was aware you're international. What I meant was that people here, in general, in have differing perception of prestige depending on where they live in. So someone like me who lives in California might not know much about NCSU but have heard great things about USC. I also applied to Columbia but I've heard mixed feelings about the program there from other forums. I haven't really thought about what schools I would prefer over the other yet I guess. I think I will wait till I get all the decisions to then decide.
  7. I think that depends on what region of the U.S. you're from. As someone from the west coast, I think USC is more recognizable in terms of engineering. I did not have to have to send any proof of financial support. You should contact the coordinator to make sure those are in if you don't see an update. It might take a while though.
  8. Received my first rejection today but didn't feel as bad as I would've since I already got accepted elsewhere. I am feeling a bit down given the fact that my academic interests highly matches that of the department and my rec. writers know the faculty as well.
  9. I agree with the above post. I don't think the letter necessarily imply that you will go if accepted.
  10. KKirill, your profile looks great, especially with the two publications! Btw, my father works for Accenture also in a different group, haha. Have you heard back from anywhere yet? NCSU replied super early for me (2nd week of January) which was weird. Just found out I didn't get into GaTech today.
  11. That was taken from IYSE's Frequently Asked Question page. So I think you can switch to another MS degree once you're in. If you don't mind me asking, when did you hear back from GaTech? I also applied for the MSIE.
  12. A lot of schools have posted results for their PhD program. I hope you all received good news! Was encouraged by profs. to apply for PhD programs but I felt that my background isn't strong enough. Also, I am not really sure that I want to pursue academia so I applied to only Masters. Undergraduate: Large State School Majors: Math & Econ. Courses: Lots of math including graduate stats. courses; lots of econ. including econometrics and game theory GPA: 3.9/4.0 GRE: -redacted- for anonymity (90+ percentile for Q, V and AW) Recommendation: 3 professors who knows me well (2 are research advisers) Research: Senior thesis, conference presentations, and some projects here and there; no publications Industry: Interned for NASA; Intern experience in financial engineering (2+ yrs.) Misc.: Received competitive national fellowship; domestic student from U.S. Programs (All MS): Stanford MS&E Columbia MSOR UVa SE UMich IE UNC INSTORE UIUC IE GaTech IE ASU IE OSU IE PSU IE NCSU IE - Accepted
