  1. If the second school is BC and the superstar is Hoveyda then I wouldn't go to BC just for him. The grad students outside of his group said he's the hardest one there and you need to get along with his personality to work well with him. That being said, I still think BC is a good place for synthetic organic outside of him: Snapper and Morken were both really nice and publish a good amount. The facilities there are really good and there is a lot of collaboration between professors which creates a good atmosphere with everyone working together.

Yes it is BC and as far as hoyveda is concerned I have heard all the rumours about him being very hard n etc but I met him at a conference a year back and i think we got along well. As far as being hard is concerned I donot mid that.......if I can survive my present supervisor I can survive anyone. As far as morken and snapper are concerned, I have emailed Prof. morken( actually one of his students) related to a poster I saw at a conference and I was very disappointed by the fact that there was no reply. I am pretty vary of working with someone. I donot know anything about Prof. Snapper.

The other univ is Penn State and again I donot know anything about Prof. Weinreb or Prof. feldman (as far as meeting them is concerned) while I have met Prof. Funk and know that I would like to work with him.

  2. Ok I have to decide between two admits and I have no idea right now.

So I have the following two admits:

    ADMIT A

prestigious, large state university consistently ranked in top 20s in chemistry( and I am not talking about USnews, its stuff like NSF funding etc) but it has only 3 faculty in my area of interest and Professor A1's work interests me. Professor A1 is a very well known professor but nearing retirement. On emailing him he said that he might take new students this year but wasnot sure. So its like a 50/50. But the other two prof I would definitely not like working at all.

    ADMIT B

Upcoming private univ ranked in 50-70 in chemistry(again excluding USnews). It has about 5-7 professors in my field but again there is only one professor B1 that I would like to work with. But Professor B1 is definitely taking new students this year. Also Professor B1 is a superstar of his field.

I am an international student so I havenot visited either of the places so I cannot say anything about the environments.

So I am torn between which one to go for. I am definitely going to pursue a career in academia and I would like to go to a place/advisor which would be beneficial for my future career.

I would love to hear everyone's opinions. Also I hope there is enough information in the post to give an opinion. If not please let me know.

    Thanks!

P.S please ignore mistakes in grammar and spelling

  3. In natural products total synthesis? Overall in synthetic organic BC is probably stronger since they have more professors but the only group that does a good amount of total synthesis is Snapper's group. I just wasn't really interested in making my own transition metal catalysts which seemed to be the major thrust there.

Ah!! u r interested in pure natural product synthesis.........ok I am sorry I misunderstood, then I guess Boston Univ is the best choice

  4. Decided on Boston University since it is the strongest in the area that I'm most interested in (natural products total synthesis).

I am surprised that you decided on Boston University. I am interested in the same field and i had offers from both boston univ and boston college but i decided on BC as I think it has got a stronger department.

  5. A thread for synthetic organic chemistry....thats good!!

I am an international student and till now

Accepted: Penn state, Boston University, Oregon state

Still waiting to hear from: MIT, Scripps, TAMU, Boston College

I would be meeting up with a professor at BU at the ACS meeting in san francisco in march........amyone else coming to the ACS meeting?

  6. Hi everyone,

I am thinking of applying for fall 2010 for Phd in organic chemistry. My dream school is MIT. I was wondering if it is possible to get into MIT without any published papers for an international student. I do have a research experience of 2 years in my home university but no publications yet.

Do you think I am being foolish aiming for MIT?

Ok that was a bit too general. Apart from the non-existent publications I have fairly good grades (nothing too exceptional I have to say) but strong letters of recommendation. I have an undergrad degree in physics and a masters in chemical research and now I want to do a PhD in chemistry.

    Hope this helps!!!

  7. Hello everyone

    here is my profile

I did my Msc in Chemical research from queen mary univ of london. My score was 75% in MSc which is pass with distinction in uk system.

I did my BSc(Hons) in physics from presidency college and my score was 58.5%(Though my score in chemistry which was a pass subject was 64%).

    my results in school are

    class X- 86.8%

CLASS XII-83.8%(state level topper in chemistry)

my gre score is 1490/1600(v-730 q-760) and my ielts score is 8.0/9.0.

As part of my MSc degree i did research for 1 year on a topic of organic chemistry but i dont have any publication.

    Sir,

I have decided it is better for me to gain some research experience before applying to top univ.

So i have decided to do MS in chemistry in fall 2009 and after that move on to PhD

For MS I have chosen the following unis. Please tell me whether i have a chance in them with 100%Aid(this is m imp)

    RISk

    1.Scripps Research institute

    2.Princeton

    MEDIUM

    3.univ of wisconsin madison

4.univ of north carolina chapel hill

    SAFE

    5.joh hopkins univ

    6.ohio state univ

    Thank You.

  8. Hello everybody,

I will b giving my subject gre and expect a top score.I want to do my PhD in chemistry.

What do you think my chances are for ivy league inst. like MIT and Stanford?

since I want a research career a Phd from a second rung uni is only going to lower my chances.

What do you think? Should I apply for MIT and Stanford or wait for a couple of years and get some research ex
