  1. Hello everyone,

I was hoping to find someone who could answer a question for me regarding applying for IGERT and what it means for acceptance into the departmental PhD. Here is my scenario:

I applied to Columbia Civil Engineering PhD and have yet to hear back from them. Last week, however, I received an email from Columbia IGERT congratulating me that my application was being considered for IGERT funding and that I should write an additional application to them. I did of course, but was wondering if this meant that I was already accepted by the department.

If they congratulated me on being considered by IGERT, does this mean I was accepted into the school? Furthermore, if I was accepted, would the department hold off an giving me funding until my application to IGERT is put through?

I realize this question is quite niche, but I was hoping someone knowledgable might be able to help.

    Thanks in advance,

    S

I am in the exact same situation as you are, but my major is in structural engineering. Have no idea if this fellowship application has been short-listed or every applicant received the same email.

  2. Hi folks,

I got an acceptance letter (PhD) yesterday but it was said the funding decision will not be made until late Mar. I acutally have contacted one of my POI before but he siad he is out of money this year. So what should I do now? Contact the admission office asking for TA positions? Or do nothing until the decision is made and see what they offer me (fellowship?) I mean would it be silly if I ask for TA but actually they are thinking to offer me a fellowship? Thanks for any advice.

  3. Would you mind posting your stats? What are your research interests? Did you mention about any faculties in your SOP?

    My stats:

Grad: US top 10 university, GPA: 4.8/5

Undergrad: International, GPA: 3.9/4, ranked #1 out of 51

    GRE: V490/Q800/A3.0

Publication: Only if MS thesis counts

Professional Experience: 2 years industry experience

    Status: Male, US citizen.

I actually didn't mention any faculties in my SOP but I am kind of regret. I applied to eight schools and most of them are top 10 ranked. I'm not optimistic about my application because I don't have a competitive research background. Hope we all can have good results.

  4. Congrats on the invitation letter. It's one step closer to the acceptance and may be funding as well. When did you get your invitation and when is the visitation day? Did it come through email or by post?

I got the invitation letter on 14 Feb. It came through an email and the visitation day is 9-10 Mar. I propably won't go because I actually live outside the US.
