  1. I think it's best if you talk to someone within your department/ field at your uni about the recognition of a degree from the U.K. The younger the person, the better because they'll usually have more relevant advice from their recent experiences. My general impression is that Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, Imperial, and Edinburgh's degrees are all pretty well-recognized on a resume and well-regarded by U.S. employers. In any case, I also studied abroad at Edinburgh and kept dreaming of its tall spires, so I'm applying to the Modernism program in Eng. Lit.
  2. [To contribute a belated response to this post.] The GPA for UCL matters, as I've discovered. I've received a conditional offer for the taught MA Modernism program for Fall 2012 given that I have a 3.5 cumulative GPA upon graduation. So a First. This offer is stressing me out far more than an outright rejection ever would. UCL does not know my college. Or my college's policy of combatting grade deflation. Or that the cumulative GPA hardly pertains to my MA degree compared to my major GPA. Or how slavishly I'll have to work this spring semester to obtain that final cumulative 3.5. Bah.
