Just returned from the Notre Dame recruitment weekend. Seemed like a great place(at least in IR/Security Studies). Faculty and Students seem really collegial ( suggested this is the case because there is plenty of funding for everyone so there is no competition between students.) Seemed really interested in the students work and willing to get them the training they need whether at Notre Dame or sending them to various other institutes to get the methods training the may need for their questions. Also seem to be adding new faculty which is always a good sign of the program growing.

Offer at ND includes tution waiver, 18k stipend, and suggests there is supplemental funding for summer methods training, conferences, research etc... -
Got emailed by the DGS at Notre Dame on friday but my schools email servers were down until today. I have been accepted with funding at Notre Dame. I was earlier told that I was the first on the IR waitlist so this is quite exciting as I did not get in anywhere else and waitlisted in a couple of other places.

Fair enough. Same reason I did not even apply to the Poli Sci dept at A&M haha.

Where have you visited so far? I am currently at Texas A&M for my master's so if you have any questions I can try to answer.

Rejection from the Kennedy School in the mail today. Expected, now just waiting for the Georgetown rejection!

Wow! Congrats -
I emailed the DGS to talk to her on thursday. She said she planned to update me over spring break so maybe she will email the rest of the waitlisters as well. If you haven't heard in a couple of weeks wouldn't hurt to email her and ask where you stand. There is also a admitted students weekend at the end of march they accidentally emailed me about (:\ that was a disheartening) and had to retract, so after that people should accept or decline and then they may go to the waitlist.

To be fair, the To be fair, the Downes situation is not so simple. He was applied and was offered to come to where I am currently am, but I won't get into why he didn't come here. II wouldn't be surprised if he just didn't want to be in DC or at a policy school, more so than just not at Chicago. Also, from what I understand, getting hired where you got your PhD from is not always the best looking in the community.

Yeah that is why chicago was my first choice. However, I talked with the ND DGS yesterday and she said she I am #1 on the IR waitlist and there hasnt been a year she was DGS that they didnt have at least one person off the waitlist so hopeful for that! I think with Desch there I will be quite happy with the IS offerings.

The Great Debate: Quantitative vs. Qualitative
Bdeniso replied to wordshadow's topic in Political Science Forum
I think there is clear evidence that the field benefits from both. I think the problem is some in the field are resistant to quant and some are trying to be economists and feel quant only is what is needed. Both of these biases needs to be rectified and hopefully our era of scholarship can help lead the fight for mixed methodology -
I think this is a very dangerous statement. There is a great deal one can learn from qualitative analysis and I think the field (especially IR) is moving quite too far towards quant only and towards and economics standards which has been increasingly shown to not be as sound as once thought. I think multi-methodological is still the best approach and the quant only approach many are going for today I believe is making the field not as strong as it can.

Finally got my Columbia rejection letter. Down to GT, GW, and the Kennedy School for acceptances and Emory and ND to come off the wait list. Quite envious of those of you who have finished your cycle. I most certainly will be in limbo until april.
-
Claiming a rejection from chicago. Still have to hear rejections from Columbia, GT, and GW but havent heard anything about the public policy PhD's from the Kennedy School.
-
If GT and GW acceptances went out today and I didn't hear guess that means my chances of a straight acceptance are over. Still have "high support" at emory and ND and hoping that will hear something soon regarding getting off the waitlist, but seems will be a stressful few months. Any tips, suggestions, motivation, success stories?
-
Still waiting to hear from 4 schools, but with acceptances claimed from all 4, not looking promising. My cycle will likely extend to april I wait for waitlists
-
At least the emails from both sounded like the legitmatley wanted me so thats hopeful

Hello all, I've been a lurker for awhile during the application season and decided to join to ask a question. I have been waitlsited at both Notre Dame and Emory with Notre Dame expilicitly saying I am on a "very short" waitlist and Emory indicating "they cannot accept me yet, but there is considerable support" for me in the department. What are the chances that I will be able to get off the waitlist at either school? I have been rejected at UCSD, Duke, Princeton, and MIT, however have yet to hear back from Chicago, Columbia, Georgetown, and GW. Consequently it seems that the only other place I have a shot at getting into would be GW and with the great aid packages offered at ND and Emory I would really like to attend one of those schools. Any support, advice, information would be greatly appreciated!
