Congratulations! It's great to hear a happy ending to the purgatory.
-
Not that they're linked necessarily, but that gives me hope that perhaps China notification will be sent out today or tomorrow as well...
-
A friend of mine received a notification postmarked Thursday, so perhaps they occasionally do it on Thursday even if Wednesday is the default? I would hope so, since a lot of us are wrestling with extensions on important decisions/responses.
-
Just out of curiosity, could anyone who has already received notification list the location the notification was received at and how many days the letter took to arrive after it was postmarked? Particularly anyone in the Southeast. Thanks, and congrats to all of ya'll who've gotten the good news.

No real insights to give... but perhaps this is what Cara Wolinsky meant when she said in a mass email to Critical Language Enhancement Award applicants that notifications this year are happening on a rolling basis. I had thought that that meant CLEA are on a rolling notification, but perhaps some countries are doing rolling notifications for grants?
-
Most notifications appear to have been sent by mail. There are a few people (in addition to me) who are waiting to hear about a China research grant. I also heard from Jonathan that we would hear back this week or early next week. He didn't say what time he expected them to be mailed, but a Wednesday or Thursday mailing would be consistent with that. Good luck to ya.

I could be mistaken, of course, but I think that that varies by country, to some degree at least. A friend of mine got a Fulbright for Jordan last year. I remember that he mentioned that some countries, such as Egypt, expressly encourage new graduates to apply, while other countries have a strong preferences for people already enrolled in post grad programs.

Wow, so it was postmarked the 9th, but still took this long to reach you in NYC.
-
Update again: China notification expected by the end of this week "hopefully," or early next week at the latest. Good luck to all who are juggling grad applications.

At least you finally got a different answer than the stock "In the next two weeks or so" response. A friend of mine got that same response again next week from Jonathan Akeley regarding China notification. I hope that Mr. Akeley has cause to change his estimation to something more specific soon-ish. On a related note, my friend who got a Fulbright to China last year said that she thinks that the Fulbright program officers tend to be conservative in their given estimates of a time frame for responses, which is understandable. Apparently she heard "sometime in the next two weeks" only days before receiving her notification. So there may be hope that notification could come sooner despite the "two weeks" moniker. My fingers are crossed. Good luck to all! Edit: She was in NYC at the time, so the disparity could have been due to mailing time.

Yeah, the next week thing was corroborated for China by someone at one of the language programs affiliated with the CLEA. She seemed to be fairly sure that we should hear next week.

Slight update for us China folks: The letters haven't been sent out yet, but I think that it's very close. They're waiting for FSB final selection. If you applied for the Critical Languages Enhancement Award, you might have gotten that email that erroneously indicated that we have received the Fulbright. While that was retracted, I was told by a friend who is also applying that he just received a request for clarification of information on his CSC application, so they're looking at those now. Again, as of yesterday, letters had not been sent out. They gave the standard "two weeks" reply. Good luck to all *Edited for accuracy

graduatingsoon: Kyrgyzstan should be really cool! I spent some time right across the border in China for honors thesis research and met quite a few Kyrgyz. Wish I had a chance to visit.

For those of you interested in China, the latest word is 2-3 before notification. Cheers all, and thanks for your input.

Thanks for the info! China doesn't have a commission... I believe that the decision is made by the in-country IIE office. I was wondering because I've been in contact with the chief Program Officer there and wondered how much bearing her positive remarks about my affiliation and project have on my application.
-
Does anyone have any idea of how the in-country decisions are made? Does the Program Officer do it? Is there an in-country board? What are their criteria? Thanks for your responses, and best of luck to all.
-
Graduatingsoon: Do you mean the Critical Languages Enhancement Award or the Critical Language Scholarship (from the USG but unrelated to the Fulbright)? Assuming you mean the former, my impression is that notification is separate from the notification of the Fulbright award. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that the way notifications are sent out varies by country and/or region. My friend got notification via email for Austria. Conversely, I was told that all positive notifications for China are send hardcopy from the country office. The U.S. headquarters will only contact finalists directly if they are wait-listed or selected out of the program.

inksoul: I don't know about Taiwan, but I heard from the China Program Officer that notifications for China are still 1-2 weeks away. Early April was his forecast. Good luck! I'm waiting to hear back from China, clearly.
