  1. I have a $50.000 loan/scholarship (they lend you the money but if you come back to Colombia they give half as a scholarship) and 10k in savings but I'm still short, especially if I choose NYU. I'm hoping to get some financial aid from either NYU or Ford to make this doable.

For anyone from latin america or the caribeann, the OAS has a great interest free loans programm than lends you up to 15k for studying in the US. http://www.oas.org/en/rowefund

Hey Andrea! You are talking about Colfuturo right? I'm applying for this year PCB. Did you apply last year or you are applying for this year too?

Also about the OAS loan you have to be in the US to apply right? That's what I had understood, since they ask for your I-94

  2. Is anyone planning on staying on the list? I think that getting off the list now is not likely, and probably the best to commit to other plans. what do you all think?

Well I think you should commit somewhere else and just wait to see what happens at Yale! In my case I'm already commited to Duke and I'm starting visa paper work and all. I stayed in the wait list because well why not? Is not gonna do any harm. And if by any miracle I get off the wait list and get a bigger fin aid package that the one Duke offer me, then I'll think about it. I guess I'm mostly curious now to see what happens.

To everyone going to Duke. How are your housing plans going? Do you have any recommendations about which area will be the best to live? I don't know Durham at all, so I'll appreciate any advise!

  3. Did anyone hear from Yale? I haven't heard

I just got the official email saying that the class is filled! But that the wait list will be open until July!

I'm going to Duke anyway, so for you who are going to Duke I will see you in the fall! I guess this week the Facebook group will be open and we can get to know each other better! Best of luck to everyone!

  4. Anyone heard from the waitlist at yale? Fingers still crossed!!! Congrats to all those who got in!

I heard that they gave a deadline extension to some people to accept admission, so they wont make any desicions until beginnings of May at the earliest. Also, I think they are gonna contact everyone on the wait list when they start

    making desicions

  5. Thank you so much for the info jbr00ks9!!! Good luck to all of you going to Yale!

I confirmed my enrollment at Duke as well! Does someone know if the tuition deposit must arrive there before May 1st?

I hope I can get some extra fin aid... I emailed Mr Scarfo, but he hasn't been very good replying my emails (0/3) so I might try to write to someone else, but not sure to whom. I got 12k so not sure if they will give me more....

  6. Thank you so much for all this info and welcome to the forum! It is the first time I hear about this certificate, I'll definetely look more in to it. Do you know if you can do it in any especialization? EE or EEP?

Again, thanks for sharing this great info!

  7. I'm also going to Duke :) (unless Yale surprises me). To those who are also going to

Durham, when do you plan to start looking for houses? I'm wondering how hard would it be if I wait until mid July, when all my visa papers are ready.

  8. Hey all, after being at the admitted students weekend at Duke all weekend, I've decided to decline offers at bren and U-M. narrowing in! All in all, Duke is impressive (and expensive!) and seems to offer students good return on their investment if they make the most of their time here. Let me know if you have specific Qs!

Did you hear anything about funding for the second year? Is it easier to find other ways of financial aid once you are there?

And by expensive, you mean living expenses? Because tuition at least is cheaper than UMich

    Thanks!

  9. Hello to all. First time poster for me and I need some help from you guys.

Undergrad: UC San Diego Fall 2011

Grades/GRE: Average and on the low side

Work Experience: 3 years undergrad as a sustainability student leader, internship in Washington DC US House of Congress as a green intern, and currently working as a sustainable program manager for a green building start up developer

LOR: One from under grad job, one from internship and one from a professor who teaches environmental management from my school's graduate business school, all of them are very strong except the cookie cutter one from my professor

Applied to: SPEA, BREN, Nicholas, Yale, Rice's Professional Masters Program Environmental Analysis, UMICH

    Accepted: UMich and Rice

    Waitlisted: Yale

    Rejected from the rest.

My Goal: Work in Urban Sustainable Green Building Development

My question is does any know ANYTHING about the Rice's program? All I know that it is 10-15 students and I am trying to decide between the two. Both of my accepted schools are not offering any type of financial aid what so ever and it sucks.

2nd question: I see that some of you guys have been accepted into UPenn, I see that the application period dont end till april 9th, Should i even apply? Since maybe a lot of the spots are already filled. Thinking about it, anyone with input of how the program works?

I went to the joint school open house in October 2011 with Duke, Yale, Umich and Bren, they all said they regarded each other as the top schools of environmental mgmt thus they do open house tours together at various cities. I know a lot about how each school operates and what their goals are, here is my short analysis

Duke: I believe is the best school, smartest environmental professionals all come from there, VERY VERY strong career center, where they help you find jobs for the rest of your life, they send out an annual resume booklet of the graduates with everyone's resume attached. ( I also attended their Alumni Reachout Open House where Alumni comes out and speak about their experience and how they all got jobs afterwards)

Yale: Their program is similar to Duke but did not speak about their career center, I am assuming their career center is not as strong.

UCSB: Seem to be much more focused on the science part of Environmental Management, did not like their students working because the program is very intensive. They just started their entrepreneurship program and is an add on to whatever emphasis you choose

UMich: Seem to be the most relaxed out of all the group and talked a lot about how they are very well connected to different areas of environmental management, i.e. water, air, policy, conservation, etc.

If you guys have any more questions please feel free to ask! Good luck to everyone and their decisions, I know how crazy it has been for the past year!

Welcome and thank you so much for all the info.

I'm going to Duke this fall most likely, unless Yale takes me out of the wait list with a bigger fin aid package that the one Dume offer me.

My focus in sustainabiliy in industrial and energy

Systems with a big component on the business side, so I'm planing to mix classes from EE and EPP. Do you know anything about the sustainability focus on Duke, did they say anything about this or about mixing two specialization areas?

Thank you and good luck in your choice. In UMich after the first term you could probably apply to GSI and these awards/assistantships have a full tuition waiver.

  10. If it helps, MCRM, I turned down Yale the other week--maybe that spot is now open just for you.

Aw! I really hope so Cam_12! Thank you so much for letting me know!

Just out of curiosity what's your background? I know they will call people from the wait list depending on what they are looking for i.e internationals, work experience, Ms students etc,

    Again thank you so much!

  11. Nope. I suspect many won't make their decision until after this Friday, the visit. I'm waiting to hear back from the FLAS award at Yale and Duke to also study Kiswahili before I make my final decision. I likely won't be able to decide until the 6th, possibly a bit later. 15th is the deadline.

Thanks! Hope everything works out! Do you plan to work with African communities? That's very cool! Good luck!

  12. According to the Cost of Living Comparison spreadsheet provided in the Duke acceptance letter, New Haven is 6% more expensive. Utilities are 40% higher in New Haven and that comprises most of the difference. Either way, it's not a major gap.

Thank you! I have read the info that the universities provide, however, for past experience I've found that sometimes these costs are overestimated, and in the end you can manage to live with less money. Anyway, it seems like I'll be going to Duke, unless Yale offers me a place with a larger fin aid package.

  13. Only $10k for one year from FES, no way! Guess Nic School now comes back into the picture for me.

Also I presume everyone else has heard back from SNRE one way or the other? Guess I got the so called "silent rejection" :(

Sorry to hear that! I'm surprise you haven't hear from SNRE but look at the bright side, their tuition is even more expensive than Yale and they don't give any financial aid. For me even being accepted that's a breaking deal.

Does someone know which city is more expensive between Durham and New Haven?

  14. Driving to U-M tomorrow. Let me know if you have particular questions you want answered.

I would appreciate if you can ask if they send admission paper letter to other countries. I got the email that I was admitted, but no paper letter yet and the financial aid is suppose to be on the paper letter. I'm not very hopefull but I would like to know what to expect.

Also, could you please ask if there is any more financial aid you can apply too? Tuition is just too expensive compare to the other schools.

    Thanks :)

  15. @MCRM

    http://www.nicholas.duke.edu/programs/professional/finances/work-study-and-assistantships

    "

    Assistantships

Assistantships may be awarded to a select number of professional degree students during their first year of study to assist Nicholas faculty and staff with teaching, research, professional and other projects. It is expected that students will work for eight hours a week on their assigned project for a total of 224 hours. Assistantships require a regular work schedule to be arranged between the student and the faculty or staff member to whom he or she is assigned. During the second year of study, professional students may fulfill the assistantship requirement by working independently on their Master’s Project. Students who receive assistantships are paid by the Nicholas School on the monthly payroll. For the 2010—2011 academic year, the award for eight hours per week of assistance was $2,900. Normally, assistantships are available only for the academic year and require full-time enrollment in the school."

    Thank you!

  16. Thank you all for the info. I have email Joe Scarfo

about other issues and he hasn't reply to me either, so I agree with cunnin he must be very busy these days.

@curlie sue, I would be very grateful if you can confirm this info for us at the open house. Also, could you please ask if you can get another kind of assistant ship once you are enroll even if it wasn't offer?

If you can ask about the hole visa process and dead lines for this, I would also be very grateful! :)

  17. @MCRM: American - California native, transplanted to New Jersey :)

Well big congrats to you! Because on the yale conference they said last year the biggest aid for American students was 20k and internationals 30k, thats why I was curious!

Are you choosing Yale now? :)
