  1. Thank you! I've decided not to go. Harder work on current programs!
  2. Thank you for your reply. You're always so nice! It's only my second semester in linguistics so I don't know if I will have any good enough paper for conference/publish by the time I apply. But I do have four papers to finish by the end of this semester, and I plan to submit at least two of them to conferences (if there are related conferences). It is a conference called "the Asian Conference on Language learning" held by International Academic Forum. It's only on its third year and I sincerely don't know its prestige. But since my interested PhD program doesn't have faculty in this area I doubt they know it well. The third point sounds good. I never know I can do that.... I'll try and see if it can work out. Thank you again!!!
  3. Hi linguists! I need an advice here. I'm now a linguistics MA student in the US (international) and I'm going to apply for PhD this fall. My interest area is Phonology/Phonetics. I was informed this morning that one of my undergraduate papers was accepted by an international conference held in Japan (Though the name is Asian conference xxx) and have a chance to be published if I attend to the conference. The paper is on second language acquisition of semantics/syntax and the conference is on Language learning. Despite the large cost on flight+hotel, my program says they cannot fully fund me but perhaps provide a few hundreds (the registration fee is $500ish). The question is, should I go to this conference and cover most of the fee by myself? Is it worth going there if the theme of the conference doesn't agree with my current interest area, and my interested PhD program doesn't specialize in SLA at all? Will the experience on such "International conference" and perhaps published paper unrelated to my future specialization help my application for PhD after all? I'm really confused here..(And I don't have any adviser to talk to) Could anyone give me some advice? Thank you so much!!...
  4. I'm sooo glad I finally got a Cornell linguist here!! Are you a member of the phonetic lab? I assume you working with Sam Tilsen (he is the only "he" in the lab right...)? Can I PM you cause I've got some questions for one specific professor.. And I saw you're planning to go LSA summer Institute... I'll probably go there too. Hope to see you then!
  5. Thank you so much! I thought the chance would increase if the professor needs PhD because it seems common in Engineer departments.. Guess we're after all different.. I'm just being too (pre-)anxious because I want to go there so badly (because I'm very interested in doing/ have decided to do research closely related to the professor's and also my boyfriend is at that school). True strengthening my academic background should be my primary concern. Keep fighting!
  6. I want to ask my POI if she needs PhD for next year (2014 fall). But though I love her research, I haven't been well-prepared in my own research (it's my second semester in linguistics and I haven't got anything to produce yet). What should I do? Should I wait until I have some research of my own (probably by the end of this semester), or should I just ask her without talking about my ideas, or talk to a graduate student of their program to see if I can get any information indirectly? Anyone can give some advice?
  7. Thank you for your advice morphoguy! I'll certainly talk to them during my next visit.
  8. Thank you rhapsodie! My boyfriend is there and I've been to the ling department building myself (in winter break though)... I really like the campus and the whole environment! It's nice to know that students can get involved in research early. I'm interested in lab phonology and phonology-phonetic interface and a few of their faculty are working on it. You mentioned they don't have some phonetics equipment (I thought the phonetic lab is well-equipped from their websites...) Does it mean it might not be as competitive as other labs doing the similar research like Northwestern, OSU and UCLA? I want to go that school so much and I'm working towards it. I don't know what I'm worried about but I guess it just makes me feel "safer" to know what kind of competition is there waiting for me..
  9. Anyone here is in/knows something about Cornell's Lin program? I'll apply for linguistics programs this fall. Cornell's strengths fit my interest quite well, but I don't know if it will be really competitive.. Anyone knows around how many people applied for this program per year and how many were accepted (on average)? How about their phonetic lab? Is it top nationwide? Hope they're not stupid questions... Thank you!
  10. I've just made my official decision on Purdue's MA program admission, which is offered without fundings. I'm just curious if there is any funded MA program (and preferably with a good reputation) in the state? I guess It might provide some valuable information for the later applicants. So, does anyone have any idea?
  11. Thanks for your information! And...I think I recognized you... Are you Century 428 on gter? We have talked!~ Big congras on your CMU offer! (if you are not him...just ignore me..)
  12. hi~ congras on your acceptance! Are you going to accept this offer (BTW, they do provide fundings right? Mine is still pending)? What do you know about this program? Thanks!
  13. Are you talking about Margie Berns? I know they do have strength in ELS and sociolinguistics and have Margie Berns, Tony Silva, etc.. But I'm just worried that it's an interdisciplinary program, which means most professors come from other departments and might not work that closely with its students... Maybe it's not true. I just want some more information. I e-mailed the administrative assistant in Mar. 6th and she informed me my admission decision in the same day. From what she said, it seems that the department had finished the review before that day. Maybe review for Ph.D. is different. You might want to ask her about the result. Good luck!
  14. Thanks. And congras on your Syracuse acceptance too! Still waiting for others who know about the program. Seems like not a well-known one though...
  15. I was accepted by the linguisitcs M.A. program in Purdue. Anyone here be accepted too? Here I have some questions. I don't know much about this program (not a department but a program under the college of liberal arts, with professors coming from different departments and other programs I guess ), so does anyone know something about this program? Like how's its professors, reputaion and position among US linguistics programs, achievement of students and so on. Thanks a lot!
  16. hi everyone! glad to join the discussion. I also apply for linguistics this year. I'm an international undergraduate and major in English. I plan to go for Ph.D. study but because of my limited exposure to linguistics during my undergraduate study, I applied for M.A. programs first. So far I have recieved one rejection from Kansas and one non-official admisson from Purdue. Still no message from UIUC. I have a question here. I actually don't know much about US linguistics programs, their main approaches, reputation and so on. So I would like to know more about Purdue's Linguistics program: how's its professors, reputaion and position among US linguistics programs, achievement of students and the like. Does anyone know something about this program? Thanks a lot!
  17. Well, it seems that at least 3 people have been wait listed...wondering who would be the lucky one...so cruel...
  18. I was interviewed and wasn't able to get a direct offer. I have another offer from a program with a much lower ranking than Cornell, so i think i'll take it if i'm offered the spot.
  19. Cornell has started to send out results, and i'm wait listed... but i just noticed that someone's considering turning down the offer. i hope you may find this thread 'cause i really need that spot. Thanks! good luck to all!
