    NSF GRFP

I've heard that people who have been awarded the Javits only have until April 6 to accept/decline. So for people in the social sciences who have been awarded a Javits--if the NSF results don't come out before April 6, that's a problem for them. The choice might be a no-brainer, you say, but actually depending on their financial situation (spouse/no spouse, etc.) and the way the university handles funding, some people seem to take the NSF instead of the Javits. Not too mention everybody who is waiting to see whether they got an NSF to decide where to go. My heart goes out to you.... Poor little old me, though, is not lucky enough to have such lofty problems. I would just be happy with a little bone thrown my way... an HM.

Part of what is annoying about this is that other fellowships have early April deadlines for awardees to accept/decline, so if they don't let us know in the next few days some people will have to choose without full information. For me, it's not really an issue. But there are certainly people in that boat. Particularly considering potential conflicts between different federal fellowships, the NSF people really should post awards by the end of the week. So if anyone over there is considering this issue, then they will let us know by the end of the week at the latest, I would say. But I suppose it's assuming a lot to think that they will be aware of this issue. Oh, my, isn't this forum a great way to procrastinate!
  3. don't go into debt for a humanities phd. just don't do it. if you don't get any good offers, try your luck next year. you can strengthen your writing sample, retake the GRE, whatever. but i think the vast majority of people with any experience would commiserate with you in this dilemma, but then offer you the very good advice only to go into a phd in the humanities if fully funded.
  4. check out the story of david graeber, and make sure to talk to several current grads and visit if possible. good funding though.
