  1. Okay, sorry for not being more specific. Also, I am very confused. If you are forbidden- do *not* get a job (and really don't trade equities). Maybe you could babysit, or do yardwork for an elderly couple? Neither is very lucrative, but they might be helpful. If you are *not* forbidden- Get a job (duh). In summary- don't shit you are forbidden from doing.
  2. NOTHING wrong with a side job. In fact, I think it is good for your wallet *and* your mind. I really want a part-time job (even though I am fully funded) to bring in some extra cash and help me manage my time. There is nothing wrong with a waitress, retail, library, coffee shop, whatever job as long as it doesn't take over your study time.
  3. Ugh, so I just started looking at apartments in and around Boston/Cambridge. The cost of housing here is atrocious. I already live in a very large city (one of the country's biggest), and I have found very little that seems to be reasonable. Does anybody else feel the same way? Any tips?
  4. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but do any females plan on visiting Brandeis in the next few weeks? I was wondering if anybody would want to stay in a hostel with me, or an affordable hotel. Also, do you have any thoughts on making my visit more budget friendly?
  5. I'm going through the same thing! I was just accepted into my dream PhD program, and I will soon finish an MA at a very good school. Yet... I am starting to doubt whether this is right for me. Do I want to make $20,000/year for the next 5 years? What are my odd at a tenure track job? If I go work for a company I can make more money and have more freedom with my life (relationships, where I live, etc.). Lot's to think about, and I don't think any of us should feel guilty for questioning our decisions.
  6. Not really, but they should seriously consider doing so. Why were you being obnoxious?
  7. It isn't really a "rejection". I strongly urge you to email the professors with whom you had hoped to work and ask about your application. Be prepared to hear things you may not want to hear, but they may give you some very constructive feedback. Best of luck. Feel free to private message me if you decide on the NEJS MA. I'd love to get to know other incoming NEJS people.
  8. I was just accepted to NEJS PhD! Good luck to everyone else.
  9. I did check the survey. I find it odd they are deferring people before they send out yes's and no's. I called yesterday, and the woman in the office said they are still making decisions. Oh well. B'hatzlacha!
  10. I am sorry to post this under another Forum, but has anyone heard from Brandeis's NEJS program? I applied to the PhD, and I have not heard a word. Anything? MA? PhD? Rejected? Waitlisted? Admitted?
  11. I couldn't agree more. Brace yourself for what may be very honest criticism. But, this is the best way to know how to move forward. Believe me, I am there right now. I have heard some answers I may not have liked, but I have also heard some helpful ones.
  12. Yes, other people are in the same boat. As soon as now is an appropriate time. I suggest calling the department and very politely saying, "I was calling to check on the status of my application. Have any decisions been made yet? I don't mean to be a nuisance, but I am waiting to hear back from other schools. Your school is still on the top of my list, and information you may give me would be helpful." Obviously, modify the script to suit your situation and your personality, but short, sweet and to-the-point is always appropriate.
  13. I am a bit confused. Have people heard from Brandeis yet (for Fall 2012). I applied to the NEJS PhD, but I haven't heard a word yet. I emailed the coordinator last Monday, but she has not responded.
  14. Hey, has anyone heard a peep from Brandeis Neat Eastern and Judaic Studies? I applied to the PhD program, and I have not heard anything. Anything? Rejections? Wait Lists? Admits? Deferred to the MA? Let me know!
  15. May I suggest that you contact a staff member in the department? If your interview went well, you may want to leave things on a good note, and just contact the department's office. Like the person suggested- keep it short and sweet.
