A little something to listen to while you wait: It's the only song I've ever heard that mentions the word "Fulbright scholar" in the text . .

I have a former professor who won a MacArthur who used to tell us "If all it takes is the price of a stamp, you'd be crazy not to apply. Imagine winning ten or fifteen thousand dollars all for the price of a stamp." This is what I tell my students today -- though I add that with e-mail you don't even have to pay for the stamp. (You can't win if you don't play -- like the lottery.)

Did they actually call it the FSB? Isn't that the 'new' name for the old KGB? Just sayin'

Eric, what's the town in Bulgaria? We lived in Sofia for a couple of years. I LOVE Bulgaria!

The e-mail came from CIES, and the subject line was: Fulbright Application. I didn't even really brace myself for opening it, because I was assuming it was something bureaucratic, rather than the actual notification. THe 'official' letter is attached, and it's on Fulbright COmmission letter head with a mailing address on it.

UK, my friends! I have a 3 month research grant at the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Durham from Jan-March 2013.

Yup, been playing around with various scenarios involving the time difference. If the e-mail comes from a Fulbright commission abroad and the time difference is, say, six hours, then presumably if I haven't received an e-mail by say NOON, then it won't come until tomorrow? OTOH, if they sent them out at 8 AM, then it makes sense to continue to check e-mail in the middle of night, like say after 2 AM? Or am I reading WAAAAAY too much into this . .

I'm actually an assistant prof. Applied for a research fellowship to Durham. It's a national security project, having to do with how we talk about threats like pandemics, and whether or not the way in which governments talk about these threats has evolved over time. I REALLY need to stop checking this site. . .

I'm delurking/decloaking to tell you all that I feel your pain. ALSO waiting to hear about the UK Fulbright. (I applied for a research grant). Does anyone else feel a little nauseous with fear and/or excitement?
