  1. It would seem to me that they are really two different programs, with the same Fulbright principles in mind. I've always applied to Full grants because I perceived that the prestige of the Full Grant goes up a bit because it is harder to get, seeing that you are competing not with primarily recent undergrad-grads, but master's, Ph.D students, and post-docs. In fact, I don't think I've heard of a Master's or Ph.D student applying for an ETA, but I am sure it happens. Also, the goals are different. You are expected to produce new research with the Full grant, which is often an autonomous, independent, and extra challenging experience (even with the best affiliations in your country), vs. teaching English which might be more structured. Anyway, I think both are a great honor to receive and at the end of the day, you are still a Fulbright Scholar and get paid to be abroad for a year and propagate the values of the program. Were I a recent undergrad-grad, I would have taken the ETA in a heartbeat!
  2. 2004- Austria, Full- Alternate 2008- Sweden, Full, Reject 2012- Brazil, Full, Acceptance!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For those of you rejected this year, don't let this inhibit you. A different year, and a different country, plus more education or experience, might lead to more fruitful results. Now to get back to dreaming about Brasilia....
  3. Congrats! That's huge, esp. considering how few full grants Austria has. Wonderful news!
  4. Oh well, here's to next week! Next Sun. is April, 1st., so things should start to get progressively more interesting in this forum next week and the following two weeks, when I think most of us will find out. At least that is what has happened historically. Have a good weekend, all!
  5. Wow- not a single informed candidate on this forum today, the 20th of March (right?).... I am really hoping to hear some news by this Friday!
  6. Abstract was just rejected from the MLA panel- Hoping to only have to swallow a single dose of the bitter rejection juice today and I don't get an email at 7:30pm from IIEE about Brazil! Ha!
  7. Trying to divert my attention by obsessing about whether my abstract was accepted to a panel at the MLA conference.. but keep.returning.to.the.FULBRIGHT. What is it about the Fulbright which provokes such neurosis??!!
  8. Doesn't that mean you are a shoe-in?
  9. May I just say that this was AWESOME! I don't care if it's true (well-- I do want to find out by the 24th about Brazil ) but all I can say is what a cool set of calculations for us to gawk at. Thanks, Benjamin!
  10. Finally another person waiting on Brazil---! I hope we find out soon. I hear it's usually between March, 15 and April, 15th--- so soon!
  11. magiaepasta-- just a note to say sorry. that's really sucks and I've been there (twice!) I hope you get to Oxford nonetheless. I did an MSc at the LSE and even got bit of funding, so there IS hope....
  12. Please add me as well, thanks-- H.B. Name: Honeybunches Country: Brazil Region: Western Hemisphere Grant type: full status: recommended academic status: Ph.D candidate research area: Literature
  13. Awesome attitude and persistence! I am in the second year of my Ph.D. and have also been through a number of rejections. Fulbright rejections- Austria, 2004 (Alternate) Sweden, 2008 (Rejected without being 'recommended') Brazil, 2013 (Recommended, waiting on decision) Ph.D. programs- Ten rejections in 2009 round 2010 round- 7 rejections, 3 acceptances - currently attending a very well known program. The thing I keep on coming back to is that that it only takes that 'one' acceptance. Often those who are seemingly 'successful,' are the ones who just keep on trying, year after year, application season after application season. So, for all of those of you were 'rejected,' or 'wait-listed,' I hope to see you on these forums next year, should your life situation allow for another application. In no way am I saying that it does not suck to get rejected and that you can (or should) reapply to infinitum, but I am saying that a couple of tries are often very worth your while.
  14. Also, could someone repost the spreadsheet link? I'd like to add myself.
  15. I'm a finalist for Brazil-- the wait is also killing me. Best of luck to all! I'm sure an answer is right around the bend- (or june?!)
