  1. lxs: I am SO super excited for you  Gosh, what a thoroughly stressful ordeal this has all been.....I have been crossing my fingers for you the last few weeks, and I had a feeling that something would work out, what with your resume! Go celebrate---have some drinks and begin planning the next 5 years of your life! We're about to embark on one of the most amazing journeys of our lives I just wish we could go TOMORROW!
  2. Maybe you could shoot her an email with your SOP, writing sample and other things you think she ought to know and say something like, "I know you're on sabbatical this year, but I thought you might want to see what the ad com will see when they look at my application." That might help her to get involved if she isn't already. You know, put in a good word for you.
  3. i sat looking over the last three pages trying to sum up something brilliant, but i have to say it's futile. there are simply too many variables at work... best advice: find that one. let's be honest everyone...a lot of these schools were filler! i'd say at least two of mine were.
  4. I updated my profile to allow PMs...I didn't realize it was off---sorry
  5. oh yeah, boojum...check your box. i sent you a pm about living in austin.
  6. boojum: Congrats on UNC! Nice to have options, eh?
  7. Hey Boojum: I received my hard copy of the acceptance letter yesterday, but no funding info yet. I received a call from the DGS about a week ago though, and she explained some of the funding options available. She said they'd been very lucky this year and were able to fund everyone. Did you receive the emailed version? Has anyone heard from UPenn?
  8. I mentioned faculty members (at least one in each SOP) in all five of my apps: I was accepted to my top two choices(one Ivy), and each professor I mentioned emailed me congratulating me on my acceptance and then proceeded to tell me they were excited to work with me. For my top school I mentioned two professors, and in my second choice, I included references to three. Of course, I had also contacted them way before I submitted my applications and exchanged some great emails over the course of the application process. I was rejected to schools 3 and 5 on my list, and am waiting on number 4. My point is, I'm not sure if mentioning the professors' names helped or hurt me...it can only have helped with the schools I was accepted to--I was told by many of these professors that it was my writing sample (my completed thesis) that excited them the most. Of course, the subject of my thesis meshed perfectly with their own research so that, too, is always helpful. What does everyone else thing? To name or not to name?

    Ithaca, NY

My husband flew into Syracuse--he paid about $330 for the ticket. We live in the south, too, so it was a good deal! Hotwire is the site to use--we found it through cheaptickets.com. They don't give you the specific times until you have paid, but it's same day travel. The drive from Syracuse was about an hour. Oh, and we bought the ticket 3 days before he was scheduled to leave. Hope that helps!
  10. My Ivy in the Humanities realm: $20,710 nine month stipend, full tuition, health insurance--all for 5 years (two as a TA) plus 4 years of summer funding, and some funds available for travel, conferences etc.! I'm ecstatic  (also, BEAUTIFUL campus/town---my Arcadia!)

I'm not sure about the studios, we're looking at off-campus two-bedroom units. Those seem doable to those on the 5 year humanities fellowship--they run about $800-$850 a month. The website on housing for graduate students attending Cornell and living on-campus seems pretty informative, though. Have you checked there?

    Ithaca, NY

My husband is in Ithaca right now, looking at different rental places along with Cornell's amazingly gorgeous campus. He says it's BEAUTIFUL, even in the winter! He even said that while it is currently 33 degrees with lots of snow on the ground, it is positively nice out, and that's saying alot, because he's in a jacket purchased here in the south where we both grew up! Another reason to be excited about Ithaca--people are so nice (again saying alot, as we grew up in the polite capital of the world), there's mandatory recycling, and the whole idea of Ithaca Hours, the local currency, is just awesome. We're all about keeping the money local, due to the fact that we currently live in the artistic/music district of a major southern city, and we've seen corporate greed and gentrification slowly and steadily tear apart and deteriorate our community in recent years (although they claim they are "REVITALIZING" the area  ). The unique vibe that we moved here for is disappearing before our eyes...soon to be cookie cutter urban chic. We're ready to be in a place that values the mom and pop shop, the indie scene, and academia in general. Ithaca is absolutely idyllic from our viewpoint. Whose with me?
  13. To the person who posted about Brown on the Results page: I applied there as well and have heard not a peep! No "your app is complete/incomplete/here" even! So take heart Chicken Dan: Have you come to any conclusions yet about where to study? You have one of those "good problems" people on this board are always talking about. I firmly believe in going with your instinct, no matter what. Before you got any of your acceptances, were you leaning in one direction? Did you have a "wash" about any one place? You know, a single powerful moment where you could completely visualize yourself happily studying and living, taking the train/bus to school, attending events etc? Maybe I'm a bit superstitious... Good luck!
  14. My status was changed today-- I'm in at UT!! I emailed beforehand because I just couldn't wait any longer and the woman I corresponded with said the congratulatory email would most likely be going out this weekend. Congrats to Chicken Dan and Arthistorian!
  15. Congrats!!! Are you just too excited? I'm sure a celebration is in order for you and yours. Mine is still not showing anything. Do they add an extra link or something saying Admission Decision?
  16. Thanks Mew and Blueskies! Yes I'm very excited about the Fall now.......I just realized how lucky I am that my first (and only, so far,) school was an acceptance......who knows, the rest could all be rejections but I wouldn't even care!! If it had been the reverse, I would be dying right now Good luck on the rest of your apps blueskies and congrats on the promotion!! Very cool
  17. Thanks, guys, for all your well wishes! I am very excited. lxs: your work experience and conferences/journals will be very enticing to any committee I'll keep my fingers crossed for everyone!
  18. Sure...I can do it now without feeling like I'm jinxing myself. V: 760 Q: 540 (pathetic, I know) and A: 5.5 I took the GRE once before--it was before I got into my MA program and I made a V:630 Q: 530 A: 4.5. This time, I really studied only for the Verbal and Analytical sections (about 8 weeks), realizing my math was going to suck no matter what. I was absolutely astonished at the Verbal score because when I'd been doing the Kaplan practice tests, I was scoring around a 650.......I must have done well at the very beginning of the test. The vocab flashcards really helped too.
  19. .... I am ECSTATIC to report that I've been accepted with funding. ... I feel as though I've been walking on air all morning.
  20. That sounds great, theboojum! Good luck On another note, who was the lucky person that received word of acceptance from UPenn?? Congrats and please do share your good news here on the board. I am eager to hear from them myself, but was under the impression that nothing would come through with them until the middle of March, judging by last year's post. It must be nice to have at least heard from schools----I've heard NOTHING yet!! :?
  21. What area are you interested in? I'm a Renaissance person myself.....really love Austin and UT both!!! Too bad the cost of living has gone up so much in recent years. I would definitely need a fellowship to attend, but the Renaissance people are so amazing at this school!! One in particular has some very innovative teaching methods which he explains on his personal website. With some rejection notices for this school seeming to have gone out last week, I believe acceptances are on their way!!! Good luck
  22. Has anyone heard anything positive from UT as of yet? Please do tell
  23. So, how is everyone doing on the "being patient" front? I thought maybe staying away from the board would help my nerves a bit, and it did until today when I checked the results page and noticed that someone applying to UT had been rejected from the Master's Art History program.....I was INSTANTLY on pins and needles, checking my email 50 times in an hour span...no news yet for PhD applicants. I just want to KNOW!!!!! Mew, I guess you're getting ready to attend U of C's prospective student event? Let us know how it goes! Best of luck to everyone.....I know we've all said it a zillion times but once more can't hurt!
  24. Who had the interview with a prof from Columbia that was posted on the results page??? Congrats!
