  1. after building up the courage for several days, i called rutgers last week to ask if accepted students had already been notified, but the student worker with whom i'd spoken had no idea. i took that as an omen and vowed never to use the telephone again. i'm assuming at this point they've got to be rejections, but it would be nice to know for sure.
  2. wow, i can only imagine how frustrated you must feel. i was angry enough, having met with a few faculty members about similar research interests before applying and then getting rejected. if it's any consolation - and i'm sure it isn't - your story makes me feel better about my situation!
  3. i've applied to the am. civilization program. i'm pretty sure they notified by post last year, but no idea if they will do the same this year. i haven't heard anything yet, but judging by previous timelines, it looks like decisions will be made soon. did you contact any faculty during the application process? i had a few contacts, but i'm not sure what role that will play in the decision making process. best of luck!
  4. I meant the Gender Studies PhD program at IU Bloomington. I guess I will have to go for masters first, given my limited exposure to that area in my earlier studies. Good luck to you.

  5. i'm sorry, which program where you referring to?

  6. could have something to do with the big snowstorm on the east coast. i'm not sure if CT is getting snow, but i know NJ and NY are expected to get quite a bit.
  7. has anyone heard anything from rutgers am studs? i see that one person posted an acceptance, albeit without funding, but my status is still listed as no decision.
  8. Hi, I am sorry for the late response. They have already notified their admits on Feb 5, indeed. I have kept correspondence with a faculty member but still got a rejection (assumed though, I don't think they have sent out their rejection letters).

  9. i've applied to the bloomington gender studies dept. i saw through the results search that one person has been accepted, but haven't heard anything yet. you?
  10. My interpretation is a resounding no. My writing sample was 20 pages of paper and 2 pages of bibliography, and I included all 22 pages even for programs that specified a 20 page maximum. I figure that they won't - or certainly won't have to - read the bibliography, and it would be inappropriate not to include one. If a program does not specify whether these pages count, there is room for interpretation. Even though '20 page maximum' sounds clear, it is an ambiguous statement. While my interpretation could differ from those of the admissions committees, either way I feel as though I still met the spirit of the rule. After all, It's not like I submitted 21 pages of paper. I'd love to hear any differing thoughts - although I've already submitted all my applications, and will grow anxious if anyone makes a contrasting argument.
  11. Where is everyone? To where are you applying? What is your focus? Have you contacted anyone? Met with anyone? My applications are just about finished, and I need something, anything, to keep me anxious and neurotic. And yet this room remains eerily silent. I'll go first - my interests include gender, consumerism, and contemporary American politics, and I'm applying to Rutgers, NYU, Harvard and Indiana (gender studies). Anyone else??
  12. wishes it were late february

  13. Has anyone been invited for an on campus meeting after contacting faculty? I'm meeting with two faculty within the same - fairy prestigious - department, and I am wondering if this is a common practice within the humanities? I'm trying to find a delicate balance between being confident without getting my hopes up.
  14. I'm considering applying at NYU, as well as Rutgers, Harvard, Yale, and Indiana Bloomington. NYU is the only place I haven't really analyzed, but from a cursory glance, it seems that their faculty are researching more contemporary issues than other schools. Where are you applying?
