  1. I guess she didnt tell you anything about waitlist chances?

No, I insisted alot to even tell me these stats. But based on these numbers the waitlist chances would be less, I guess.
  2. I just called NSERC and the lady was kind enough to tell me that : This year around 100 applicants have been awarded the PDF and almost 37-40 (in total) have been short listed. I guess NSERC should close the PDF program as it is just shrinking each year.

  3. Just an update that I received my successful NSERC PDF letter in the mail today (April 10th) - I'm at UBC Vancouver. Wishing the best of luck to those still waiting on letters.

Congratulations. May I ask you what dept are in and possibly your stat?
  4. Were the 5-10 people in the short list from all disciplines? I also emailed NSERC to see i they can tell me my rank. I will try to also cal the ECE rep in NSERC to see if she can give some info.

Who else was here from ECE in waitlist?

No it was just for phys/chem. The number of shortlisted people in each discipline depends upon the number of applicants. Last year there were almost 190 applicants for phys/chem. For ECE there was 241 applicants. So you might expect to have a higher number of people being short listed in ECE.
  5. Did they say your rank?

No, I just insisted for a couple of minutes to let me know how many people in average get shortlisted. I sent a request to NSERC to provide me with the reviews for my application but they are not going to send it to me until June.
  6. 6 as a first author in IEEE Inc. and American J. of Applied. Physics (both journals are considered good) and remaining papers have second or third authorships. I did not have a lack of publications I guess. Not sure what took away my points.

Just called the NSERC rep for Physics and Chemistry to see how many people are shortlisted for PDf (of course I am in the engineering program, but the engineering rep did not give me a clear answer). He told me that in average they shortlist between 5-10 people and last year only 2 of them got out of the list.
  7. Okay more people added to the short list club of PDF, I did not find anything on the web regarding our chance in getting the award in June!!!!

I know a friend of mine last year got out of the list. I do not know what was his rank. I guess in each category (e.g. electrical engineering) they shortlist 2-3 people and not more. That's just a guess.
  8. Does it mean that you are in the waiting list? Did they offer you IRDF?

Yes, I am in the waiting list and yes they offred me the IRDF. But the truth of the matter is that IRDF is absolutely pointless. I would rather find a job in the industry instead of working for two years for a company that might result in hiring me and nothing more.
  9. Hi Everyone,

I am a new member of this forum, I got my NSERC PDF award letter on Friday.

I heard from many people that J1 visa for NSERC PDF mandates a 2 year home residency requirement, meaning that if I use my NSERC PDF award in the US they will force me to return to Canada after my program for two full years. So this means I can not apply for faculty positions in the US or any kind of job until I have returned to Canada and lived there for two full years!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think this is fair since faculty and job positions in Canada are limited and this is going to really suck after I finish my postdoc :(((

Hi Tasneem. Congratulations. I wonder if you can please share your stat with us.
  10. Hi simhod,

I am a fresh PhD from UBC. My profile contains: 8 journal published / submitted papers (7 first author). I also listed up to 7 conference proceedings (all first author) plus some filed patents. Straight A+ GPA. Strong recommendation letters and pretty very justified PDF proposal and tenure location. But it proves that this year's competition is more fierce than I expected... Thanks and good luck with your letter!

Thanks for sharing your stat. Out of these 8 papers, how many of them were published or accepted in the time of application?
  11. Hi all,

I've also been lurking here for the last couple of weeks. Thanks for all the updates (except those trolls who got all our hopes up about 10 days ago!)

Today, I just received my PDF result: rejection but on the waiting list. I'm not sure what the chances are of funds freeing up, but I get to keep my fingers crossed for another 3 months now!

The letter came in the mail to Cornwall, ON.

Good luck to the rest of you!

Can you please tell us your stat?
  12. Yeah, I was worried it would be even lower. this year. I'm worried enough as it is, no one from my university (NO ONE) has gotten a PDF in the past couple years.

Just called another Dept of NSERC to see if the 8-10 percent is trustworthy. He told me that last year the success rate was 10-14 percent (it was around 10, I guess) and this year is 8-10 percent. He also mentioned that they have had a drop in the success rate for this year. Sorry again for very bad news. I know from last year's forum someone with 8-10 journal publications did not get the award.
  13. For PDF applicants: Just called NSERC and asked for the number of awards, he told me that he does not have the exact number but only 8-10 percents of the applicants have been awarded. Sorry for bad news.

  14. Just called another department of the NSERC. Been told that they might send out the results by the end of the week. So,I guess yeah the results are not ready yet. Sit back and do your theses.

  15. I begin to lost hope for today.. what do you think ?

eliasg, do you think the piece of information that you provided earlier regarding your department knowing the results is trustworthy? if so, why did the NSERC staff told me that the results have not be sent out?
  16. Just called NSERC and they told me that they have not sent out the results yet becuase of the delay in the budget announcement. They told me that they will send them out late this week or early next week.

  17. I am fully bilingual ( trilingual even), he could simply ask for it politely. I simply felt that eliasg was more comfortable with French, that's all.

Edit : PS : just to let you know guys, you can apply to NSERC in FRENCH.

French is an official language of Canada.

You are talking about being polite. Would it be polite if in a group of friends where every one is listening, you talk in a language that most of them do not understand?
  18. I have jut called Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal.

They didn't receive anything yet. Generally, they receive the answers at the same time with the candidates.

Guys, have you noticed that in this forum ONLY a couple of people from "Ottawa University" with the mailing address in Ottawa have received their results and nobody else from elsewhere has received anything. I believe some thing fishy is going on here. Just to be sure that my hypothesis is correct: has any one from any other canadian city or university received any type of notice for PDF, PGS, CGS, ... (rejection or acceptance) from NSERC or the university? If so, please let us know.
