I'm always confused when people apply to MFA programs that their not entirely familiar with.  You can google 'University of Pennsylvania MFA  CV'. Most of the artist tend to stay in in the Philly area and a few working abroad...

Fair enough, I applied because my friend told me they had great funding (which they don't), and I've been waitlisted at yale, columbia etc like 2 yrs in a row, so thought I'd try something different.  I've heard positive things through the grapevine and a couple of their grads are pretty famous, but I'm just not fully acquainted with the upenn program because they don't really make any rankings lists, etc.

  2. @2222222 thanks! I'd still consider hunter if I were you, based on the pricetag, location, faculty etc.  I'm just relaying a sense of what I've seen, but also know people who did great going there, and didn't go into massive debt like you would at other spots.  Getting a foot in in New York is pretty priceless.  Were you accepted anywhere else?  Upenn seems like it should have a lot of clout considering the reputation of the university as a whole- I just don't see a lot of people, especially painters, coming out of there and showing here in NYC.  From what I understand it's on the up as a program, I'm just not sure any of these programs are worth taking on tons of debt.

Same for me; I interviewed with two old white dudes (i'm not one) who weren't painters (i am one) who were super unfamiliar with my work, and it was kinda like they had never seen abstract ptgs before.. they kept asking how sculptors and photographers were supposed to look at / talk about the work.

i showed them some pics i snapped of my sculptures on my phone and the sculptor asked, "Why didn't you apply with these?" ---BECAUSE i thought i was applying to a painting program! i feel like they shouldn't make you apply to a specific discipline if ultimately that will damage your interview.

I know people that go to hunter and are unimpressed with a lot of things there.  I think their program is overrated and some of the people I know who have gotten in recently make pretty bad work.   Did you guys apply to RISD or Columbia, or know anything about Upenn's program?

I actually think I didn't do so hot on my interview, but what you said comforted me a bit, haha. I absolutely loved the program and faculty so it bums me out that I'll most likely be rejected, but at this point I've gotten over it and feel happy to even have gotten an interview. In any case working full steam on my work this year led me to some personal breakthroughs and progress in my art so I feel pretty optimistic about that.

And I just checked my slideroom, it says 2016 Painting MFA. Yours?

@junie  or anyone else hear from columbia painting?  I'm still waiting after being interviewed a while ago and it's killing me.  I presume at this point I'm not getting in.  Also anyone hear from RISD painting?  I was wait-listed at SAIC and accepted at Upenn, but the pricetag is pretty steep and living and working in BK I don't hear a lot about Upenn's program or see their alums doing much, with a couple of high profile exceptions.  Is anyone going to Upenn or have more insight on their program?  Thanks guys and good luck
