  1. phew, that's huge improvement alsmost 150 points old scale i raised my bar for verbal today after one-month verbal study in the above recommended way by 60 points old scale. I used http://flashcarddb.com/ and added Princeton Word Smart (670 words), read RC passages from http://www.codecoax.com/grerc/ and ETS paper-based tests (towards the end of one-month prep). So it's quite manageable, unless you sit and glaze on RC and simply hate verbal stuff. You must develop keen interest towards material you read (RC passages) and comprehend the stuff. Otherwise you won't be able to analyze the passages.
  2. if you keep on hating verbal section, it's not gonna work the way you wish you got to get stance of feeling GRE passages with your eyes, meaning they must be comprehended by you and read fluently. This is not like you buy books, do exercises and then score high. You have to read at least 1-2 RC passages very-very slowly everyday and try to understand them. Increase your vocabulary and read regularly GRE passages, many of them may update your knowledge actually. Most of GRE passages are informative and convey good sort of information. I have come to know a lot by only reading those passages recently, as I am also passive reader and read only when I am obliged to do so
  3. Maryana don't take PR online test. It's not to say bad, it's just muddy. I have come to this conclusion after testing myself with PR online MST. Nothing to be made use of this test. My actual GRE score was above 160 for math and the verbal score was higher that that I received in PR. I tested in June. I will retake my exam. It's not that PR is harder or they score you lower than actual exam. I have throughly analyzed PR's MST questions (I am in a good shape now as my retake is in two days) and found three questions in Math not formulated precisely for their answer to match what the questions were asking. Also I had very strange sequence of sections in MST 1. Started off with verbal and ended with two quants verbal-quant-verbal-quant-quant the experimental quant section contained only two topic questions - numer theory and algebra. Three of the questions were totally moron-like and for one question I saw not image on screen (QC entry) but file names - some tb.abracadabra.image file 1 and 2 don't take PR to waste your time.
  4. range 30-40 i guess is safe and 20-30 mod.safe your verbal is a bit down, and AWA doesn't help recover nevertheless you need to show math courses at ugrad and grad level (expecially for Europeans) - real analysis, calculus 1,2,3, stats, some intro into econometrics can help, differential analysis some research projects - at school or published papers in magazines start earlier and finish by nov.2012 If i were you i wouldn't retake GRE. You hit 800 - that's it, they need this for econ PhD my fight is ahead: Thursday, Aug 09 is my day of intrusion
  5. it's all here http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/about/scoreselect please read and comprehend @ maxi as this is the only valid source, and any useful answer you get will be based on that source
  6. I am glad forum readers are not deluded with "score" mania, but then there are many tyros who come from countries in which non-standarized tests are attypical. So mine was attempt to elucidate the situation at this time (tried to add use vocab-wise )
  7. Which field you are major in? Point to point comparison takes one to the percentile comparison. The latter are always adjusted to their updated ranks. Say if you scored 161 in verbal and that would mean 89% before April 01 2012, after that date you will see 86% rank in your score report. This is given all scores stay as they come initially but percentiles are changed. Now tell me what would be the sense for such a smart professor from your school to look at ostensible data available from ETS score report when there's much more relevant percentile rank data available for their meticulous review coming back to my question again, don't take an umbrage for my question if you are humanities major, the worse you stand at this time, as not all said is literally meant - don't you look after the word implications any, the scores may imply percentiles too and not only the points if you are tech guy, then you will know percentiles are not percentage
  8. that's true about cut-offs, but when it comes to comparing two absolutely matching candidates against each other - GRE, Ibt-Toefl, Acads + research/work experience - percentiles could be well gamed. The candidates with higher percentile scales will be favored by AdComs over those with lower percentile ones. Some more facts: In 2011 according to ETS data the GRE General test takers' pool reached 800,000 people. Say roughly 15% people score at high percentiles either in quant or verbal or the combined (85% ranking, Q 162 or V 161, or combined). It makes the competition amongst some 120,000 people intense for some 22,500 places (rated schools 1-100) for each cohort accordingly - Masters and PhDs. Of course those competing for Masters will face more intense competition, because not every one looks after PhDs. Again this will be off-set by the number of places for Masters and PhDs available, since the latter would require a university funding and would be limited. Thus, 5 people per 1 admission place of course after all other criteria will be met, i.e. GRE, Acads and research/work experience
  9. depends on your target score for quant if you need the same 161 quant score then self-study will help you above that ceiling you need either more than a year of intensive GRE math practice or tutor who will direct your studies and approach your weak areas more analytitcally than yourself
  10. don't worry as soon as new percentiles are effected the scores of those who took exam prior to rescaling of percentiles will be ammended automatically too. That is the schools will receive new reports indicating score-percentile adjustments and the score reports online will be updated with new percentiles too. If i were you, i would not worry about my percentiles against those who tested earlier but would think that the percentile obtained by you is below 50% anyways (!) - don't be so jealous and retake the test.
  11. try MGRE test in untimed mode - that's the way beneficial than when you simply mark and leave it in timed test. Ponder over questions, and you will learn more than if you mark and go. That you check OA and explanation will not help you. Do your best with difficult questions, learn to solve on your own firstly, absorb the math concepts and apply them for GRE. Do continue MGRE tests in untimed mode and study the content of most challenging questions. With the easy questions most people solve, mark and go anyways Having said this much if you score not below 92% in MGRE math (untimed mode) you will be guaranted 160+ for math in exam. If you raise your score to 166+ in MGRE your test score achievements in real GRE may also stand closer to 166
