  1. Deechi, just to clarify, my acceptance is to the Georgetown Pubic Policy Institute, not the SFS (didn't apply there). Still Georgetown? I would be able to take SFS course, but the focus of my degree would be the extensively quantitative Georgetown MPP. BTW, why is the quant stuff not so useful? Just curious--am I totally wasting my time with either of these courses of study?
  2. At HKS, I'll be pursuing the International Global Affairs (IGA) track. At GPPI, I'll be pursuing the Homeland Security Track. My ten years in the Navy translates nicely into International security studies. I'm particularly interested in the intersection of hard and soft power. Thanks!
  3. A newly discovered external funding source means that funding (or lack there of) is no longer a factor in my grad school decision. That being said, I am struggling to decide: HKS or GPPI? Harvard is, well, Harvard. Alumni network is amazing (with numerous contacts and internship opportunities in the current administration in particular). I keep hearing that the "great internships go to Harvard kids." Also feel like if I decide to leave DC (say my husband's work takes us to the West Coast), the Harvard name will be more recognized? GPPI has the advantage of being in DC, which means I could do internships all year, and NOT have to relocate to do an internship during the summer. (Particularly nice, since I have two small kids). So, advise please!! With funding no longer an issue, HKS for the brand, or GPPI for the location??
  4. I'm actually in Cambridge right now, to attend the HKS open house tomorrow morning. That being said, I actually haven't decided where to go yet: HKS, SIPA or GPPI. Here are the pros and cons: Harvard PROS: Name recognition (domestically and overseas, and inside and out of "public policy" circles), alumni network Harvard CONS: $120K in debt... SIPA PROS: International slant, "conflict resolution" track, MUCH less expensive ($20K fellowship, plus high maximum funding from Post 9-11 GI Bill) SIPA CONS: Slightly less name recognition? High cost of living in NY GPPI PROS: Inside track to Beltway jobs, close to husband's reserve duty (which means he will be home, not away, during his "weekend a month.") GPPI CONS: Even less name recognition? Still about $120K in debt. My feeling right now is that if I'm going to be in debt anyway, it should be for Harvard. But am I a fool to turn down SIPA? Is GPPI a strong enough program to be compared to HKS/SIPA?? SIPA and GPPI are both ranked #9, but my purely anecdotal sense is that "I got into SIPA" garners a lot more "Good for you!"s than mentioning GPPI. Any thoughts??
  5. I do know that the Kennedy school employment statistics are impressive, and that grads tend to make more off the bat then grads from other MPP programs. So, the decision I have to make is, Harvard with no funding, or Columbia, which offered a $20K fellowship for the first year. Any HKS/SIPA grads out there (or anyone else for that matter) with a thought?
  6. Admitted to HKS (MPP), but no funding. Is the Harvard name, alumni network etc. worth being $130K in debt? Any thoughts?
  7. I was lucky enough to be admitted the HKS (MPP), SIPA (MPA) and GPPI (MPP). Now the hard part--how do I choose? I am a Japanese-English bilingual military veteran, so my experience lends nicely towards a focus on international security, but not 100% sure that is what my academic concentration will be. My hope (I think) is to eventually work inside the beltway. So far, fellowship offer from SIPA, waiting to hear financial decisions from other two. Any advise? My instinct is the JFK will provide me an exceptional education, outstanding alumni et al, but Georgetown is such a good "in" with the federal gov't... Any thoughts?
