  1. When do people generally start finding fall housing in the area? Are students already securing their leases? And do students generally pay for the summer before a term starts or after? That is to say, we're planning on moving to Durham in August and would prefer to not pay for June and July.... Thanks for any insights!

  2. I hate to put it bluntly, but I have no better way to ask this: where in the triangle is it friendly to observant Jews to move to?

I'm serious - I'm actually an observant Jew from NYC. Is Cary my only option (or is it a bad option), or does Durham or Chapel Hill offer alternative options?

Fairly observant myself. Any suggestions? Proximity to Kosher food is a big plus. I don't want to be perpetually attached to the Hillel club.

(I have applied to Duke, NCSU, and Chapel Hill for my programs)

There is a conservative synagogue right next to Duke's East Campus - a number of observant professors and students live in that area. An orthodox minyan meets in a smaller room of the same synagogue (http://www.betheldurham.org/index.html). From what I can tell, the dinning halls on campus tend to offer kosher options and an observant professor told me that there are a few kosher restaurants in downtown Durham.

  3. Does anyone know when UChicago and Yale will be rolling out their acceptances? Based on the last few years, it won't be until the end of February, but I was curious to know if anyone had insider info.

For Yale at least, the committees have to submit their acceptances to the graduate school on February 22 and the acceptances/rejections should be out on March 1. Also, their stipend is the highest at $31,000 and some change... but cost of living is incredibly steep, so I think it evens out with the other top tier schools.

  4. Any word on how Yale goes about interviews? Does the entire department have a single interview weekend regardless of discipline, or are there different interview times? There is not much information about interviews available from past results.

Its just via Skype and is apparently very short. Yale requires all departments to do interviews for PhD programs, and I believe that the religious studies department isn't super happy about that.

  5. Hi guys, I have a question. Do do schools normally reach out and invite students to visit?

I think it really depends on the program and the discipline. In the humanities interviews are seemingly much less common than in the sciences for example. As a religious studies student only three of the eight programs I applied to give interviews. For the programs I was really interested in and knew there was not a formal interview process, I made a point of visiting before applications were due, sometime in the fall. Looking into threads for your particular subject area should be helpful!

  6. Anyone know when Duke's interview weekend will be? I only ask so I can go ahead and schedule something important for that weekend so I can justify my lack of an invitation with an "Oh, well; I wouldn't have been able to attend anyway." ... : P

Yep! I have it direct from the admissions coordinator that the interview weekend is Feb 8-10th.

  7. I am in the process of deciding which grad programs to apply to and have stumbled across Yale's joint-degree program, Religion and Ecology. Has anyone in this forum participated in the program? Thoughts?

I am specifically interested in the relationship between religion and landscape. That is to say, the nineteenth century religious attitudes of Americans toward their bioregion, landscape, geography, etc. and in turn, how these attitudes affected the environment and land stewardship.

If I pursue this route, I would prefer to do the MAR concentrated track because I hope to pursue my Ph.D. I'm interested in the historical perspectives of religion in America, however, and not necessarily in how to make contemporary religions more "green." This leaves me with the question of which track to pursue, any ideas?

    Thanks!

  8. Hi RyanD, I realize you posted this a year ago so I thought I would check to see how it all worked out for you, seeing as I am currently in a very similar situation. I have practically the same stats and am very interested in Yale, although I graduated two years ago and have been working at an environmental think tank since. Just curious, did you inquire further about applying for the Ph.D. with just an undergrad degree? I'm specifically interested in religion in America from a historical standpoint, specifically how religious practices were affected by the landscape of the American West in the 19th century, which makes me feel like I would be a better fit in the Religion Department than in the Divinity School. I am trying to figure out if I should even bother applying to the Ph.D. program, and based on Vega Maudlin's recommendation it does seem like my chances are slim, but I don't seem to fit comfortably into any field of the concentrated MAR. Any thoughts anyone has on this would be much appreciated!
