i've been keeping quiet but this post really annoyed me. couple things. first, i agree that always saying two weeks is annoying and probably not the best practice. but as for saying they are almost a month a half late, you are entirely wrong there. they already announced the winners that they would have in a normal year. they did their job, exactly as they were supposed to. They were also given some extra money, and they were kind enough to award extra ones this year. you should be happy that you weren't just given a HM/rejection. saying that they are late is completely ridiculous. congress approved their plan what, two days ago? how about you give them a chance to organize everything now so they can announce the winners.

not to be overly optimistic, but you mean it's not getting tripled according to your unsubstantiated speculation

I wonder when the rest of the letters letting us know will come be sent

I'm alternate NDSEG and limbo NSF....anyone know if alternate NDSEG could get stimulus money? there is much less available info on NDSEG than NSF.....
-
i mean it seems like people have received the email already though

clearly the issue here is not the thread being derailed, its one disrespectful person posting false results. locking the thread only inhibits the entire purpose of this website because of one person
-
since the other one is locked for some ridiculous reason lets do this one... post on NSF GRFP. too bad the other one wont get too 100 pages... can we find out why the other one was locked? because one person posted fake results? thats a little extreme...

i thought we already proved the website being down means nothing
-
i'd be curious to know how many different people contributed to the 1349 (at time of post) posts
-
last time scheduled maintenance was nothing

i think i'm gonna miss this once we've heard...

no, i think superchuchubu got our hopes up....

i imagine that most of you who are calling are pushy enough that even if they put up a canned answer, you would still press 0 to talk to a representative and ask the question that the machine had just answered

thing saying 2009 fellows are not available on list of names is gone

Here is the way the stimulus money works: Each department gets awarded a certain amount of money, and they more or less get to decide where the money gets spent. However, any stimulus spending must then be approved by the OMB, a section of the executive branch. This is why it takes so long. Depending on how anal your rep in the OMB is, getting your desired expenditures confirmed can take a long time. Also, the stimulus money only needs to be allocated after 18 months, not actually spent. So stimulus money can be used to pay us in 3 years because it was allocated to us this year.

this is definite. they changed the rules of NSF so you can defer that one so people could use both NSF and NDSEG but you must defer NSF not NDSEG

I don't claim to know anything about the status of the results this year, but some people are jumping to extreme conclusions over things they really don't know anything about. Those that say they saw their review sheets and said that they were either awarded or not awarded a fellowship, i don't believe it, even if it said "XXXX, congratulations on winning/not winning" and even if it said that I'd be skeptical because they could just be testing scripts for when they do finally decide anything...there is a reason they didn't want you to see it. I also don't believe that there are departmental lists out there, because if there were then they would inevitably be leaked and we would know. So, if there are people that have some sort of list, it has to be because of some affiliation with the fellowship process, not because they are important people within their field, or something like that. To those of you who are frustrated about not having results, i share your pain, but in these economic time, stimulus or not, the government must be cautious about its spending. Awarding 1000 grants of over 120k each is not something to be taken lightly, and the NSF has a responsibility to taxpayers to be deliberate about awarding each individual award. Anyone who has dealt with NSF before knows that they are slow in posting results, so its not like it is just with this fellowship. Everyone take a deep breath, and lets all be rational about what we are thinking. Before each of us sees a letter saying you have or have not won without an NSF seal on it, assuming you have or haven't won an award is unproductive. I'm sure I will get lots of flak for this post, but oh well.

people are gonna have a field day with this one....
-
i really hope this isn't true....this would completely defeat the objective of the awards
-
why do you say you wont get nsf? ndseg is much more selective....
-
correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure its been like that for like a month, unless i am misunderstanding what you are saying....
-

someone should write a proposal on doing research on how to streamline the process of awarding NSF fellowships
