Thanks for writing cogdiss, and congratulations on your award. I really hope the inside scoop from your advisor is correct. I remember writing my essays last September-October as the banks were crashing and the bailout was being debated...I thought it was horrible luck to be applying at such a time. But now, who knows. This is my first and last time applying- I'm into my second year. The GRFP doesn't bear on my choice of institution, but will give me the freedom to do the necessary field work for my project whenever I want to do it. If I don't get it, I'll have to stay behind and fulfill my teaching requirements. Such is life at a large public school facing budget cuts. (and I've missed you Friar.Tuck)

Yes, of course. If you are up for further consideration, they look at many factors--location is just one of them. My point still holds though.

So do they look at the state or the zip code? States are heterogeneous, and I am from a bumble---- zip code/region in a fairly educated state. I'm just saying...

Yeah, I got a departmental email congratulating someone on getting a prestigious 3-year fellowship from NSF (not the GRFP). My heart stopped momentarily and I thought it was all over.

What kind of research experience (or publications) do winners typically have? Has anyone ever won with a 3.2 GPA :oops: ?

Where can you see your ratings sheets? I don't see anything...
