  1. After researching programs for the last couple years, it seems UConn info is hard to come by outside of their website. I've never come across anyone involved with the place, probably because its such a small program... Maybe someone will surface

  2. Indigoconcord, are you attending UChicago winter critiques? Have you accepted yet?

Yes! I will most likely be there for at least one of the days - really want to meet potential classmates as classmates and not competing interviewees. Will you be there? I have not accepted yet, as I'm waiting to hear back from other programs. Anyways, I'm super excited about uchicago... I think they're going to have a large presence in the immediate trajectory of the "mfa". Have you accepted or are you waiting to hear back from Burren/CMU?

  3. Can't say on SD cause I didn't apply, but I heard from UCLA. I guess I can shed some light on their process for sculpture anyway. I got an email from the area head to talk on the phone and was told I was a finalist, after the interview I was moved to recommend for admission and had to be cleared by the graduate division (I'm assuming the larger administrative body of the University). I can't say for sure if I'm in (knock on wood) or if having gone this long means a rejection for other hopefuls, but that's been my week. Suffice to say it's been nerve racking, exciting, barely ate/slept, and way too many of my peers/teachers here at my school know now lol.

    congrats!!! very exciting

I was put on the waitlist at Rutgers last year and they didn't notify me of it until the end of March. I think they do not have a hard-set schedule for how and when they notify people. With them, I would say as long as you haven't been told you were rejected, you probably still have a shot.

really good to know, thanks robet. where did you end up - brooklyn or nyu?

  4. I was wondering if anyone knew if no news from Rutgers (and a "no decision" online) equals wait list? Or maybe they just are slow in notifying everyone.

    I'm nervous about their silence.

im very confused by them... on this forum, many have been accepted, many have been rejected, and many have received no word (me included). im still ASSUMING they havent notified accepted 'painters', as none have come forward, but i believe there have been people within the new genres/installation/video category that have been notified of acceptance. havent seen anyone officially waitlisted in any distinction yet...

  5. Was she able to tell you of your admissions standing or just that they were still in the process of distributing funding?

Thank you so much for sharing!

She was. I emailed her 2 days after the interview (Friday) out of immature impatience because I was super-wooed by the program/faculty/building/campus/everything... Couldn't help it (and regretted it the whole weekend for fear it would annoy them). She got back to me the following Monday (last Monday) with the best news I could have hoped for. However, she said official word wouldn't be for at least a few days and up to a few weeks. The funding comment was pure speculation, I have no idea what their process/situation is. For all I know, they could still be deciding on a spot or two.. Seemed like a pretty impressive group of interviewees
  6. Has anyone who interviewed at UChicago heard anything at all??

only "semi-unofficially" because of my own initiated contact... i think theyre still working on funding or something? who knows. email alison - shes got the scoop.

Did Stephen mention where they were in the notification process (how many more they are looking at)? I have yet to hear from them but am still hopeful. I feel they would be a good match for the work I am making.

most of us are under the impression that the accepted painters have not been notified yet.

  7. It's hard not to freak out (when I saw you were posting in here I assumed you were going to say you had been accepted to Rutgers and I was going to have to scratch it off my list) but looking through last years forum this seems to just be how it goes with Rutgers. People were hearing back via e-mail, phone calls, and the status page for a few weeks.

I don't know what is going on with UCLA, I visited the school and went to an information session and the admissions woman seemed pretty adamant that they don't interview. But all the evidence seems to be to the contrary, what is up with that? I know that one of the painters that I talked to there said she hadn't been interviewed, but just got a call saying that she was excepted. Has anyone heard that their references were being called? They also seemed to insist they only did that if they had "specific questions," whatever that might mean.

Then there is the elusive USC, which it seems like no one knows anything about. I actually forgot to bring a pen with me to the info session there, so...

rutgers takes the cake for "weirdest admissions process" so far. ucla and usc are tied for "most mysterious." there was word of a possible ucla-painting acceptance on here last week, so my hopes arent too high.. but i cant say they ever were.

Hopefully we can both hear back some good news from Rutgers soon, I am pretty excited by their program and they are actually reasonably priced.

yes! me too. seems like a pretty great fit as well

the USC deadline was fairly recent - Feb 1. Considering that some of us are still waiting on schools with deadlines in early Jan, I personally think it is safe to say that it is a bit early to expect to hear from USC.

That said, I don't have any info on them at all either... this is just my own reasoning.

im under the impression that they interview some people via phone right around this time/next week. could be wrong

  8. received an email from rutgers and assumed it was a rejection... but it ended up being about transcripts. called to see what was going on, and apparently theyre "still notifying accepted applicants."

also called ucla. "the graduate division (mfa-painting) has not notified any applicants of decisions." "the graduate division" seems like a loose term, but who knows...

  9. ? no intention to condescend - i highly respect and appreciate your posts on this forum, theyre an asset. its hard to have meaningful conversations via internet - apologies abound.

i was merely confused by semantics and trying to establish some sort of framework for the terminology. i agree with your premise, but it seemed like your referring to contemporary art theory as "going back to using Modernism" was confused with what you just elaborated on in the post above.

  10.  Many have realized that art made in the 1960s-1980s was not the colossal shift that Greenberg and Fried made it out to be, and that we are still dealing with most of the same frameworks that artists were dealing with at the beginning of the 20th century.  So instead of jumping on the trend bandwagon many are going back to using Modernism for our current time.

'modernism' in the greenbergian sense relied on an essentialism that has been logically beaten to death. its principles were also exploited and brought to their fruition by minimalism (fried fought hard but lost). art that is aware of its condition and history will never be 'going back' to any such ideology. all of its aestheticisms are now accepted in the contemporary vernacular as valid, if thats what you mean... but this notion that we are once again viewing and making art as a developmental evolution working towards some self-aware transcendental apex (kantian/hegelian/greenbergian modernism) is malarky. i think were quite stuck, and probably always will be (unless the rapture comeslol or we learn how to hone time-warp), in a cycle of contextual relativism. philosophy has been out philosophized and were swimming in a pool of meaninglessness. some see this and can only conjure negativity/cynicism/etc, others see this and realize an existence without inherent meaning allows meaningFULness to be formed in whatever manner each individual sees fit. if sincerity, emotion, empathy, compassion, and honesty is what is meaningful to you, than so be it - but nothing will ever be universal, and you should probably evaluate whether or not your beliefs are held because of a sentiment of universality before you make them the core of your being.

i think that is the condition of contemporary art and life, and i think it is wonderful and terrible at the exact same time.

however, the only contemporary art that i know of which fits the criteria you (emoree) describe, without contradicting itself in an unaware manner, is certain forms of social practice. for example, theaster gates

  11. Hey all, any advice on how to dress for MFA interviews, espically in the Graphic Design/Design fields.

the best advice ive gotten on this topic is "the nicest outfit youre comfortable wearing."

im not comfortable in nice/expensive things. so i thought id probably end up looking underdressed, but it really didnt matter (and almost all 30 other interviewees were similarly "underdressed")

  12. it's worth mentioning you can submit your results (as well as search) through the forum.  Results go back to 2008 in some instances.

its also worth mentioning that those results can be misleading or non-existent. for instance, UofC's last "accepted" entry is from Feb 3rd, 2010 via email... their interviews didnt happen until a week and a half after that this year. northwestern doesnt have a single "accepted" entry. neither does usc.

  13. ive seen much conflicting info on when i might hear from certain programs. on this thread, lets ONLY post straight, direct information that we know first-hand from the programs we've applied to - no hearsay please! this is for the sake of future applicants, as we will not much benefit from knowing after the fact. of course, this is relative to the 2013 application cycle. future applicants, be aware that these are rough timelines and are no way definitive, as some programs are fluid and might have varied timelines from year to year. that being said, if the application deadline is the same, chances are these timelines will give you a relatively accurate idea of when to expect some sort of communication and of which schools you will be required to interview with.

ADD NEW PROGRAMS TO THE LIST. ONLY ADD A DUPLICATE PROGRAM IF YOUR TIMELINE WAS NOTICEABLY DIFFERENT OR IF YOU APPLIED TO A SEPARATE DISTINCTION

  14. ^^^^^^^^^^^^   Can you define what you believe to be or what makes the school 'conceptual in nature'
This seems like a pretty ignorant question to ask on a forum full of potential graduate students in the field... Maybe this would be a more appropriate and information-gaining question: "Does the school subscribe to a particular theoretical ideology or does it simply stress intellectual pursuits over formal execution?"
  15. Looking at my notes it seems that, yes, you were supposed to send in an official transcript to Rutgers ahead of time.

Sorry, that really sucks. I would send it in now and hope for the best. Good luck.

This is where I sent mine:

    Graduate Admissions

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

    18 Bishop Place

    New Brunswick, NJ 08901-8530, U.S.A.

wow, i suck. calling them immediately after work.

  16. Rutgers applicants - did you send official transcripts from your undergraduate institution(s)?

im using my first stretch of free time since the app was submitted to review my applications. my Rutger's 'application status' page reads: "official transcript has not been received from _______." it also reads, as a general message in a different section: "It is your responsibility to ensure that all credentials required for review are available by the deadlines as stated" - yet, it does not say anywhere that my application is 'incomplete' (as other programs make abundantly clear if you are missing required material). I could not find anywhere on their labyrinth-of-a-website telling us that official transcripts are required with the initial application (i uploaded scans via pdf).

  17. this silence is brutal. still nothing... from anyone. If a school has already sent out waitlist & interview emails, silence = rejection, yes? maybe?

hey pie, the only school i know about on your list is u of chicago. dont want to be the bearer of bad news, but if you havent been contacted yet, theres probably not much hope. theyre interviewing 30 people for '8-10 spots' this week. an email or call to the program might be your best bet at this point.
