Unfortunately, I've heard stories about the Catalinas being old and on the dirty side...There are also horror stories about the management people. When I visited there, they said that most students end up moving out by their 2nd year... That's disappointing. As a result I am now looking into apartments near campus that may be newer or have better track records of actually retaining residents. But all in all I guess it wouldn't be too bad to live in the Cat's.
  2. Hm... I didn't get any red flags at my interview weekend, but we were hardly a crowd (about 12 people). The students seem very intense and science-y, and are as satisfied as any other grad students I've ever seen. It rained on my weekend, so we didn't walk outside too much. The rumor is that Caltech undergrads are really odd (no offense to any reading), but the grad students seemed normal enough. I didn't hear about any funding problems or layoffs, except the common knowledge that 2-3 neuroscience faculty are leaving, rendering the neuroscience sector a bit on the limp side. This was the biggest complaint that I heard from the other prospective students there. I'm sure they'll have no problems hiring more young faculty, though. I myself am not in neuroscience, so it doesn't really bother me.
  3. Oh wow, you really JUST got accepted, huh? Congrats! I wasn't sure if you were Biology or BMB because the folks that went to my weekend (Feb 13?) all heard back in mid-March. They really made you wait... :? Let's get in touch once you make your decision!
  4. thanks, ndufour. wakuwaku- congrats on your Fulbright and your decision! clx, great to meet you! I am a senior at MIT (Cambridge, MA) right now. Very excited about moving to So-cal. Have you decided on Caltech too? Are you in the Biology program, or BMB?

Thanks for the response! I will most likely be living within a 2 mile radius of the Caltech campus. Do you have any opinions re: the safety of that area? I am a small, young female and anticipate having to walk outside alone at night after work (possible up to 10 or 11pm). Are there any nearby neighborhoods that are either not safe or safer than others? Thanks!
