Fair enough, living in Manhattan is not cheap, though it does come with extra benefits. Nevertheless, there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Subsidized housing is available to first years. 2. The stipend has a 9-month duration. So, there is some additional summer funding available at NYU, or you could (say) get a paid internship elsewhere during the summer. 3. You can pay very reasonable rents by living in Brooklyn, Roosevelt Island, Jersey City, etc. Then there are the perennial favorites such as taking multiple roommates, etc. Now, if you live alone in Manhattan, take the taxi everywhere, and eat out every night, that's a different story .

I don't know about unsupported students, but supported students are compensated quite well.

Once you pass the oral exams, you can sign up for PhD research credits, i.e. you don't technically have to take any more formal courses. So, the 72 credits isn't as much as it seems.

actually, someone just posted that they were accepted today off the waitlist for ndseg. i guess one of you is giving incorrect information.

that's odd. why then would one person get a rejection and the rest of us, not?

hmm i am still waiting as an ndseg alternate myself. (but i already got nsf reject). sorry to hear you got turned down. i didn't think they would notify this early. has this happened to anyone else?

Judging from last year (a glitch occurred on 31st March, results posted April 2nd), we should expect at least a 2 day gap between the glitch and actual results. So, since the glitch occurred yesterday, I predict we will get results Monday at the earliest.

Or you could reject NDSEG for the benefit of those of us on the waitlist . Though I hate to admit it, I suppose it makes more sense to you to act in your own best interest. Well done.
