  1. All I know is, there is no way I am waiting around for Rutgers. New Brunswick is not exactly a place worth waiting around for, and to be completely honest, I'd rather be in a department that wanted me and treated me in a remotely respectable fashion. If this is how they run admissions every year, then they must anticipate receiving a lot of rejections of their own. They can't expect us to wait around for them if and when they decide to start talking, since they certainly aren't the only funded game in town. Hopefully, in the future perhaps the Gradcafe will function as some kind of Better Business Bureau for grad school and people will avoid Rutgers.

Me-ow! And on that note, let's get the board started back up! I need something to read during the day - good procrastination and all that. Anybody get any news today? Of any variety? I got no new grad school news, but can tell you that my cats hate the new food I bought them. Aaaannnnnd.... Discuss.

  2. I am currently a MA student at Michigan so feel free to ask any questions. I agree with indecisive (who, by the way, should change his/her username by now.. :)) that really, funding and department fit should be the deciding factors. AA likes to think of itself as the Manhattan of the West (as U-M does of Harvard of the West) . I'm not saying that it's NYC here but in terms of quality of cultural arts, entertainment, music scene, and restaurants as well as... rent prices. Pretty close anyway. Unlike Columbia, you can actually live close to all what AA has to offer (If you're going to live near Columbia or in Brooklyn, it's a trip down to Manhattan!). Also the other advantage is if you are a big sports fan. Obviously at student prices as opposed to all the pro sports that are in NY metro area.

But downside is that the airport isn't that accessible when it's not break time so you'd have to make careful arrangements. And the 20-30 mph gusts.

Try to e-mail with the grad students and faculty. The atmosphere is really supportive and there's a lot of engagement between the faculty and the students.

Um. Columbia is IN Manhattan, and parts of Brooklyn aren't that far away. If you're worried about convenience, Columbia is convenient to lower Manhattan - right near several subway lines, both express and local - and the Upper West Side is also really nice in its own right. And as for Brooklyn, the commute is NOT that bad. Sure, some parts of Brooklyn are far out, but not all. And Manhattan isn't the center of life in NYC anyway. Brooklyn has a lot of great stuff of its own, and you won't need to get to Manhattan for much, if anything, should you choose to live there.

  3. :? unfortunately, it looks like i might turn down all 4 of my accepted schools (and one MA...) ...they're all in the 25-40 ranked range.

i'm scared that they're not the best fit for me. i don't want to be there for 5-6-7 years and not have a job when i leave. i feel a bit crazy about this since the application process was so rigorous.

    anyone else doing this?

don't know, but why don't we keep this thread focused - your question might be a better one for the general history admissions 2009 thread, or for the decisions, decisions section of the discussion board.

but hey, if you do turn them down, tell us which ones!

  4. Anyone on it? How did you find out? Did you find out where on the waitlist you are, and when you would know your status by? Also, what field are you?

Also, has anyone gotten an official rejection by any means other than calling the department? My status online hasn't updated and is still no decision!

  5. I should hear from Rutgers today. I guess I'll wait till tomorrow or Friday to call them if I don't hear today. I'm ready for this to be over.

Has anyone's status been updated on the website? Mine hasn't!
