    Providence, RI

I'm heading to Brown too I've been periodically checking craigslist for housing, I'm moving in early though, so I've been looking to sublet something for the summer and look for something more permanent for the fall after I move. I'm not too familiar with realtors/landlords in the area, but I'll see what I can find out if you have specific questions.

Holy mother, I can't believe I actually made a decision. I'll be joining Brown's Neuroscience Graduate Program. Anyone else going to Brown this fall? I'm already in RI, will probably be moving to Providence in June or early July.
  3. Mmm.. My program doesn't technically start until September but they said they'd be willing to help me find funding so I can do my first lab rotation over the summer starting July 1st, I believe. I just need to contact them and see who has the time to help me out, but I've been holding off until I formally accept their offer. So assuming the details get worked out there, I will be finishing up classes here, not going to commencement because I'm cool like that, moving back with my parents in Massachusetts for a month and a half, and moving back to Rhode Island sometime around July 1. I'm planning to sublet for the summer while I look for something more permanent and save up for a security deposit/first month's rent. Am toying with the idea of working part-time, but I'll wait and see how broke I am because that's what I've done the last two summers and I'd really rather not do it again. If I don't spend the summer doing a rotation, I'll be looking for work at home and will take a couple weeks at some point to travel. Possibly to Europe or Australia. I'd like to go somewhere in May or June either way, but at this point I seriously doubt I'll have the money
  4. !!!!!! I just got an email from Brown offering me admission to the neuroscience program! :D AHHH.. I am so thrilled right now I don't even have words. I'm going to wait until I hear from Dartmouth before I commit to either program, but I absolutely loved Brown when I visited and I already have a whole Rhode Island "family" established since I'm living in Newport right now. Lots to consider, but EEK.. SO HAPPY!
  5. Eh, I'm already in debt. A little more isn't going to kill me.
  6. I'm going to start running again as soon as possible.. it'll be good for me mentally and physically to go burn off some steam every day again. I just had my last interview weekend and am now driving myself crazy wondering what I'll do if I don't get in at one of my top 3 programs.. they aren't even ordered at this point, I loved them all and I don't care which one I go to as long as I'm accepted at one. I'm also thinking about doing a couple weeks in Europe in May/June after classes are done, even though I really can't afford it. I'd plan to fly into London and fly out of Amsterdam and spend the interim wherever I happen to feel like going once I get there. If I'm going to be in school for the next five years or more, I might as well do something fun and slightly crazy now while I still have the time.
  7. Hey, I'm an ex-French major, wine is appropriate at any time. The paper's just a one-page deal on a cladogram for my comparative anatomy class. I still have 3 or 4 interviews to go before I decide, but I'm hoping to get into WashU Med school. Accepted at UC Irvine and almost completely positive I'm also in at UMass Med, notices haven't gone out yet though. How about yourself? Haha.. my background on Chomsky is limited, I recognized the name but I admit that I actually just Googled him to refresh my rusty ADD memory. I'm a liberal hippie so I would probably like him from what I've read so far, haven't looked much into his psychological stuff.
  8. So far the interviews I've been to have basically been to make sure you're as good in person as you are on paper. It's important to go in ready to describe your past research experience and be sure you have a good reason for why you're pursuing a PhD, but so far I've had pretty decent experiences and I'm usually super shy. Like crustaceangirl, my interviews have basically been me talking about my research, the professor talking about their research, and then they answer any questions I have about the program in general. The program is (presumably) paying your travel expenses to have you interview, they're already interested in you if they're shelling out the dough to bring you there. Haha.. the free beer is a big bonus I've had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people, both students and faculty, at the social events so far. Take notes afterwards if you need to, I've been keeping notes in a notebook and making Word files for each school with the basic statistics (stipend, time to complete degree, etc) and pros/cons so when I finally have to decide which school I want to attend, I have the basics written down somewhere that I can compare them. The interview is at least as much for you to evaluate them as for them to evaluate you, so be confident and have fun! If you're a good match with the research interests of some of the faculty and you don't, you know, get drunk and make a fool of yourself or something, you'll likely get an admissions offer.
  9. Ooh, that would be me.. I've recently been able to get to bed around 1:00, the last three weeks of the fall semester I was routinely up until 4 or 5. Right now I'm drinking wine and writing a paper.. hey, I've already been accepted to a PhD program, I'm allowed to take a few creative liberties!
  10. AHHHHH I'M IN!!!!!!! Oh man.. I've got four more interview weekends and am still keeping my fingers crossed for my top choice, but I'M IN! Unofficial admissions offer to the MBGB program at UC Irvine, official letter should be in the mail next week. I'm sorta ambivalent about the umbrella program itself, but it's only for the first year, there's plenty of research going on that I'm really interested in, and I am absolutely in love with SoCal so I'd be happy to go if I don't get an offer from my number one. YESSSS. RELIEF!
  11. Invited to interview at Tufts Sackler! They were the last school I was waiting on.. this whole process is so surreal, I can't believe I fly to CA for my first interview this week. Craaaazy.
  12. I'm considering birthday clown/magician as a backup career if nothing else pans out while I think of a better plan and prepare for another round of applications. My parents would be happy to have me back home, I'd get to hang out with little kids without actually going through the whole giving birth/raising process, and I make a fool of myself on a regular basis anyway so I've got loads of experience! I could probably dress my dog up like a mini-lion and bring her with me, too. Er.. on second thought, I really just hope I get in somewhere. I'm sure the clown/magician life is not nearly as glamorous as it seems to be. As far as passing the time until the rejections and hopefully acceptances start coming in, I have one word for you all: karaoke! Haha.. I'm actually getting pretty good. I'm a hit at the gay bars, anyway, and they tend to be a tough crowd.
  13. Oh I know we do, I meant it in jest but it probably didn't come across that way 'cause it's the Internet and my brain is preoccupied with some mystery flu/fever thing right now
  14. I got a 4.5 also.. I'm a scientist though, I don't have to know how to write, so I don't think it's had any major effect on my applications. In all reality, I studied for about a week for the GRE and skipped over the part where structure and length were most important for the writing section. I was too busy learning ridiculous GRE vocabulary words.
  15. Haha.. yeah, I can't believe that none of them are on the same weekend. I go to UC Irvine first (fly out Feb. 7), then UMass Med, then Brown, then Georgetown, and Dartmouth last. It actually won't be *too* bad, I'm in Rhode Island right now and my parents live in Massachusetts so the drive to Brown and UMass will be easy. Dartmouth is a bit further but I'll still just drive myself there. I drive a lot anyway, I loff my car(5-speed Jetta, moonroof, heated seats, premium sound) and I'm also a closet karaoke addict so I can use all the alone time in my car to practice I'll still probably spend my entire spring break sleeping though! I'm not really leaning toward any one in particular yet.. there's a lot of research going on at all of them that I'm really interested in, I'll have a better idea once I actually visit the schools. Of course now it's going to take all my willpower to get my ADD self to focus on schoolwork in between all the traveling!
