  1. I didn't graduate from SNU or KU but I have friends who did their Masters in linguistics there. The universities' websites are not helpful so forget about getting any useful info or trying to sort out useful info out of them anyway. I agree with Sarakeet, you should just email the professors of the subfield you're interested in. Or if you specify a list of professors you'd like to take classes from or to work with, google their names in English and take a look at their publications. That will give you more idea which school or program you'd like to study in. I know the linguistics courses at SNU are all in English, but I heard many students (including foreigners) are able to understand Korean. SNU has great reputation in linguistics and has great professors and research environment although it's a bit relative depending on the subfields. Many grad students at these universities are pursuing PhD in linguistics not only at SNU but other universities in NA, Europe, or other places. I feel there is not much for me to say unless you decide which part of linguistics you're most interested and plan to study. Like what JoeyBoy said, there's a lot to linguistics and you'd have to specify/elaborate to get a more concrete answer. Seoul is my hometown and I did my undergrad and Masters in the city, so if any of you has a question about the city in general or about studying in a Korean grad school, feel free to send me a message.

    Ann Arbor, MI

Hello, I'm moving to Ann Arbor this Fall and very happy I made the decision. I don't drive so I'm planning to get a place in walking distance to the central campus. I was told that the rents have been rising for the last couple of years and the chance of getting a decent apartment for reasonable rent is quite slim in August, so I'm thinking of flying to AA in April to look around and sign a contract. I don't think I'll need a car to go about to see the rooms since I'll only be looking at the ones near the campus. I'm going to look at the listings online, and then have a list of apartments that I'd like to actually look around. I think I'll e-mail the owners or the property managers beforehand and ring them for appointments when I arrive in AA. In this case, do I need more than two days (from morning to evening) to look and sign a contract? I really need to get a room before April because I'm still finishing my degree until the end of summer, but still I don't want to get a place that I wouldn't love to live for at least a year in a hurry. If anyone could help, or have any advice for apartment hunting in AA, that would be great!
  3. Congrats! And I too got a reject from Berkeley. Oh well. I seriously considered Cambridge but I ended up not applying. Wish UK grad schools had more funds for international Ph.D. students.
  4. Thank you, Phonolog for your thoughts! I agree with what you assessed, including the pros and cons for both schools. This is my first time applying for graduate schools outside my country and I was rather surprised by the competition with full funding for Ph.D. posts in UK schools. Almost all professors at my university studied at US schools and they all recommended US schools because of the funding. I did look into the full funding (tuition+stipend) but I didn't even meet the eligibility because I'm not from UK/EU/any Commonwealth countries. I'm only holding onto a very slight chance here..
  5. Thank you, Des Grieux! I was indeed worried about the situation you described - that I won't be hearing from the UK uni before the April deadline. And you're right about no stipend in the scholarships. There are so many different things to consider between UK and US schools. Thanks so much for your advice. I've been checking with UT at Austin too but mine only says my app is sent to the department for review..
  6. Congratulations to all of you with great news! A few days ago I got a conditional offer from a university in UK. I'm pretty sure I can meet the condition if I can get an extension for the deadline which is the end of February. What I'm not sure is that they notified me about the tuition and other fees I'd have to pay if I am admitted. I hear many universities in UK don't offer students a similar kind of an American university offers, but I know this specific university has awarded some kind of departmental scholarships before.. the situation would of course be subject to change entirely though. Now I'm wondering if the notifications (plural, I received two separate notifications making sure I am aware of the tuition for international students) mean that I won't be considered for a scholarship from the department. I did apply for the university scholarships but the winners will not be decided until April. I haven't asked them anything about the financial matters yet, and I'm already nervous about not having contacted the POI at that university.
  7. Thank you, and I guess last year must have been quite a year for you! I only worked part time in the summer. It's great to see your hardworking paid off since you're already accepted to Northwestern! I've only heard great things about the people there. I looked at the Linguistics threads from last year and you're right, many schools seem to send out notifications in February. I'm still hoping to hear from other schools, but UMich is indeed one of my top choices. So I really need to nail that interview! It'd be great to get a straight acceptance.. I wish I had more time. Oh well. hotsaranghae and mq1, let's stay positive, we've got a whole month to wait! Here's hoping we'll be hearing only great news in February!!
  8. Hello, been lurking on here for a while but it's my first post. So far I've heard back from two schools, one is from Ohio State University and sadly a rejection. The other is from my POI at U of Michigan, they're inviting me to a campus visit for all shortlisted applicants. I didn't contact the POI before applying although I did mention her works in my SOP.. It should be a good sign eh? I feel nervous because I had to juggle my applications (all 11 of them!) with two ongoing projects and I work part-time. Couldn't find the time to seriously prepare for GRE, so I was nervous about my scores although they weren't terrible. Oh I'm an international applicants so I have to fly to Michigan, but I've already told her I'm coming. I kinda panicked because I'm also applying for NYU and Northwestern but I haven't heard from any of them while some people on here have accepted or offered interviews. I'm assuming rejections from them. Haven't heard back from UCSD, Arizona, Berkeley, Illinois and Texas at Austin. Anyone heard from any of these schools? Anyway I was half-expecting all rejections from US schools because of my poorly prepared applications but it was nice. I haven't heard nothing about the funding but I guess the final decision as well as the funding choices will be made after the visit.. Have anyone been to this kind of campus visit? How much is at stake here and what should I expect from it? Any advice is greatly appreciated! And I saw on the Result Survey page that someone got accepted from Urbana-Champaign and someone from UT at Austin, but they're Spanish Linguistics and French Linguistics respectively.. I've also applied for these schools but my program is just Linguistics. Are they independent or what? Getting nervous again..!
