  1. Ghanada, thanks again, and stop following me around gradcafe, haha. Seriously, this is some really great advice, and better summarized with all the info I've been looking for than most other sources I've checked. I'm doing my best to avoid bringing my car to Boston in order to save some money, but I'll keep one eye on Jamaica Plain, as I've heard numerous good things about the area. Brookline seems like a good option for me, as I would like to have some peace and quiet around the apartment, and I'm willing to shell out a little extra for that. I'm on the hunt as we speak, and I'll be sure to follow up if I have any more questions. Once again, all the help is really appreciated!
  2. Hey all, Just last month I accepted my offer to the BU Masters program in Psychology. Wanted to find out if anyone else is beginning this program in the Fall, or if anyone else is even an incoming grad student for the Fall. As an out-of-stater (coming from Atlanta), I am currently looking into apartment/housing options in the Boston area, and planning to visit the city to apartment-hunt in a week. Any else have recommendations on good areas to live/methods of finding affordable rent and people to live with? Also, if anyone else is currently looking for a place/roommate, feel free to contact me. I've already gotten some general advice about good locations for grad students to live (looking at Corey Hill/Wash Sq, Allston, and even possibly south Cambridge around Central Sq on the north side of the river), but if anyone has any friendly advice, I'm all ears. Pretty much just looking to meet anyone with anything to say about BU, Psych MA or no. Thanks in advance for any replies! -Cab
  3. Hey, congrats! Waitlisting is at least a step in the right direction; any word yet on your acceptance to the program or not? I'll be attending the MA Psych program in the Fall, and as an out-of-stater, I'm always up to meet a fellow incoming BU grad.
  4. Hey there, just saw your post and unfortunately I don't have any bright ideas regarding that next step. I am however planning to attend the MA Psych program at BU in the fall. Just wondering why you wouldn't recommend the program, and how the program iteself ruined psychology for you. I have heard others say very positive things about the program (except perhaps for the cost), and I was curious to get your take on things. Regarding a transition to East Asia work/study, have you looked extensively at institutions that offer masters programs in this area? I would think a Masters in Psych would present some good opportunities for related fields specific to East Asia, possibly related to social psychology, community psychology, or even I/O or consulting work. Any ideas what you want to do career-wise? Just some thoughts to help, and if you have a moment to pass on some advice about BU, I would really appreciate it. All the best, Cab
  5. Hey ghanada, Thanks for the feedback, and yes, this is some good advice that I have received before. I guess my reasons for pursuing a Masters are two-fold. The main reason is that I did not take full advantage of research opportunities during my undergraduate years, and following graduation, I have found it very difficult to find a good RA position while lacking extensive previous experience (much less a paid RA position). On another note, I also want to strengthen my abilities in psychotherapy and my personal areas of interest simultaneously, as I hope to pursue a science-practitioner based PhD program and one day participate in both research and applied clinical work. An RA position sounds great, but it has seemed both difficult to obtain and one-sided in regard to my career goals, so I felt that spending a little money for some further education made sense. Maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way, and if you think I'm wrong on any of this, by all means please clear it up for me! There are multiple roads to the PhD, which I suppose can be both a burden and a blessing. Thanks again for your feedback!
  6. Okay, a slightly convoluted and three-pronged question here: Which program to pick between Teachers College Psych in Ed MA (Personality and Psychopathology Track), Boston University's Psychology MA, and Mercer University's new Clinical Medical Psychology PhD? Ultimately, my goal is to obtain my PhD in Clinical Psychology, however I feel I need a better background in psychological research to gain admission to a good PhD program. I threw out my application to Mercer (small Georgia university) on a prayer, just to see what happened. It's by no means a top program, but they have a good rep in the state and the program itself is in its inaugural year. Otherwise, I've been dreaming of Boston for months now, but TC also looks like it has some great things to offer. Anyone have any thoughts, advice or first-hand experience they could share? TC's deadline is in a matter of days, and the grad app anxiety is on full force right now. Thanks for any and all help!
  7. Hey everyone! So I'm a bit new to the forum, but needing some desperate help with my grad decisions, as well as some fast approaching deadlines. I've been scouring the forum for days, but I think getting some direct feedback would be great (especially any of you current grad students in either TC's or BU's program). At the moment, I am deciding between TC's Psychology in Education MA (Personality and Psychopathology Track) and BU's Psychology MA. I have had dreams of going to Boston now for months, but BU is certainly a bit pricier. TC has also impressed me with their organization, program details and numerous resources for newly admitted students. Is anyone out there familiar with one program or the other? Any insights or experiences to share to help me make my decision? All help is incredibly appreciated!
